OzBargain Approved Tent/Swag for Camping in NT?:

Hi Bargainers,

Just moved to Darwin 6 months ago and love the dry season in Darwin. Mate asked me camping in Kakadu so looking for tent/swag recommendations. As it's currently dry season so there won't be heavy rain and in wet season if the rain is too heavy then I probably won't go so a medium-level water resistance might be enough? And just my mate and me so tent for max 2 people will be enough. Under $100 would be ideal but can pay a little bit more ($200 max). Plus I'm very new to camping so any suggestion or advice other than tent would be appreciated too.

Cheers

  • Always lots of secondhand gear in as new condition on gumtree/fb marketplace.
I reckon most of the cost of gear is the little odds and ends that are $20 each but add up fast.

  • The Naturehike tents are always popular on Amazon . These are more of a backpacker style if hiking

If you're going to camp next to your vehicle, consider a Swag or maybe one of the Coleman instant up tents

If 2 of you are sharing a tent, get at least a 3 man, maybe even 4, depending on the size of your mat / airbed

    • Own that Coleman and love it!

Recently dropped to $169 on Amazon (thanks camelcamelcamel).

  • I recommend the Zempire Mono. About $150. Very good quality, bought one a few weeks ago and tried it out in backyard overnight.

I see lots of suggestions from NSW and Vic.

I suggest you try a camping or 4wd forum as the discussion here is missing the two most important thing for northern australian camping.

    1. Heat and ventilation.
    2. Midges.

Avoid 2 person tents for 2 people. It is extremely squashed. Great for extreme cold, unbearably hot otherwise.

Rain will not be an issue for you here. Any tent with a combined tarp will do. Literally any tent

A 3 person tent + double mattress is a nice size for 1/2 people. We have an anaconda store here if you want to take a look

    • 3man tent per half person? That’ll be a 12 man tent then.

If you can drive to the spot then anything with 'instant up' in the title is always a good start. No one likes setting up tents in the Darwin heat. I was looking at one like but never got it when covid kicked in: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Weisshorn-Instant-Up-Camping-Ten…

Not sure on the Weisshorn band (someone might be able to step in) but seems to be pretty good value.

  • Roof top tent? Keep away from those oversized Prehistoric lizards.

    • Waaaay out of the budget even after assuming the vehicle has all required mounting points ready.

But it is a nice option.

  • ARK Outdoor's Hike Dome Tent is pretty great. It's a two-person tent and it's compact, lightweight and 100% water-resistant. The price for that one is only $89, so perfectly within your budget too.
