  • Any cop would see you using that from a mile away.

    $1000 fine in QLD

    • Agree that it may not be wise for a driver to use it, but it's handy as a tablet holder for the kids in the back of the car, or for household use. I have one holding up a tablet on my desk.

EDIT: I'm in WA and use of these devices is permitted while driving, but only to send or receive calls or using it as a GPS. Text/email/video is not permitted.

      • Not sure where you got your info but i spoke to a WA cop and was informed that as soon as you touch your phone you get a fine, even in a phone mount. A cop can't tell what youre doing with your phone (sms/email/music etc) so it's an auto fine. He said you can play all you want w your car's infotainment unit which he agreed was worse for distraction as your eyes are further off the road. You can only take calls via bluetooth enabled steering wheel controls. Hope that helps

        • WA Road Safety Commission

A driver of a vehicle, can only touch a mobile phone to receive and terminate a phone call if the phone is secured in a mounting affixed to the vehicle. If the phone is not secured in a mounting, it can only be used to receive or terminate a phone call without touching it (e.g. using voice activation, a Bluetooth hands-free car kit, ear piece or headset).

It is illegal for the driver of a vehicle to create, send or look at a text message, video message, email or similar communication, even when the phone is secured in a mounting or can be operated without touching it.

GPS may be used by a driver whilst driving if no touch of the keypad or screen is required.

How can I legally use my mobile phone while driving a vehicle or riding a bicycle?
A driver or cyclist is permitted to touch a mobile phone that is securely mounted to the vehicle or bicycle to accept or end a phone call.

From 1st September new legislation comes into affect so that even if you touch your phone for audio calls you get $500 fine and 3 demerit points. Maybe that's what the cop was referring to. As it stands today though, you can touch your phone to receive/terminate calls as long as it is in a mount.

You can still use your phone in a mount to receive/terminate a call using bluetooth, voice controls, or controls on your steering wheel.

  • Are you sure this is safe?

I am using an iPhone Smart Battery Case with my iPhone.

and I am just using it as navigation, any legal risks?
