Any Experience on Buying Used Intel Processor from eBay?

Anyone here has any experience buying a used Intel processor from ebay?
Particularly the ones from sellers in China.
I'm hoping to get some points to watch out for before I buy.

As a background I have a LGA1150 platform using i5 4460, and thinking maybe I should buy the latest processor for that platform, instead of spending a lot more by upgrading everything else. I'm looking at i7 5775c, since the price is roughly the same as i7 4790 or 4770 (which are one gen behind).

  • Just check your motherboard for the cpu. Not all 1150 MB's accept all 1150 cpu's !

    • yeah, mine says it supports i7 5775c with the latest BIOS update

  • Surely you value your own time. Don’t do it.

  • do you have z97 mobo ? if not ,

    ryzen 3100 - $150
    b450m - $99
    16gb - $99

    • mine is GA-H97M-D3H, that says it supports the processors i mentioned above

      • if that h97 bios allows multiplier oc , then go for it , else your 200+bux 5775c gonna stuck at 3.3ghz base clock

if no oc, you're better off with the cheaper xeon e3-1231v3 from aliexp

  • how much is that i7 5775c?

    • anywhere between $150-200 on ebay

      • then better to change CPU+MB+RAM to Ryzen later. No point of wasting ~$200 such a old used CPU. Also you can sell current CPU+MB+RAM and get some money as well. I also plan to do like that when I can't use my PC anymore (i5 2400+ECS H67+16GB DDR3)

  • thanks all for the responses.
    I do need the iGPU.

I'll reconsider my options, especially on Xeon, apparently there's Xeon 1285L V4 which uses Broadwell architecture for US$84.5..
    Seems like a good value/risk

  • +1

I've been reselling 1150/1155 PC's for the past 2 years.
Hands down, the best CPU on the 1150 socket is the i7 4790k no questions asked, the i7 5775C is only 4% slower than the i7 4790k on average. So just get whichever has a better price. The 1150 socket is extremely good, and your i7 4790k will stay relevant for at least 2-3 more years when it comes to high spec gaming, and should be able to last you up to 2025 for (most) new game releases if you're willing to turn the settings down.

  • i wouldn't bother with chinese sellers on ebay you can get them cheaper on aliexpress and sellers there do more volume

for 4c/8t on 1150 you can get something like this:

not sure about igpu tho you have to google to find out

    • I've pulled the trigger and picked xeon 1285L v4
Broadwell (with iGPU) and lower TDP.. for US$84.5 it seems to be of terrific value

      • yup looks good, might need a bios update tho on the mb
