Lonely Planet "bargain"

There is no bargain to be had here, just an observation. I'm on the Lonely Planet (LP) mailing list and as a 'subscriber special', they are offering 1/3 off the price of all city, country and multi-country guidebooks (using promo code = TREAT, for Halloween).

The thing is - even with the discount, they're still far more expensive than others. I picked a title at random - Argentina - and cross-checked against booko for other deals.

LP full price = $41.99 + $6.90 delivery = $48.89
LP discounted price = $28.13 + $6.90 delivery = $35.08

Booko showed 16 other stores to buy it from which were cheaper (including delivery) than the special discounted price. So much for the LP "treat". I assume LP make money off people who don't bother checking and just leap upon the promo code and think it must be the best price so if they can get away with it, good luck to them.

I would hope for a better offering for their subscribers.

  • Thanks for this moooooooo,

but i do think it might be worth posting as a bargain with the code being able to work for pdf versions! which i think is exclusive of the LP site. this is more handy if you just want to get it for a particular chapters! which is more useful that be buying the whole thing..

lol i tried to get a discount for their buy 3 books for 2 but when i entered the code it supersede that promo and takes 1/3 off all three books… that would have been very good if it combined the promotions.

but thanks for the code! i might get some chapters since scribd got hijacked by the lonely planet corp..

  • Thanks for the advice about the PDF chapter - good point. I tend to get the entire book, or photocopy chapters from the library myself, and forgot the PDF chapters were exclusive to the LP website. It's now a submitted bargain.
