YadaYadaYada on 04/11/2011 - 11:00 ¶I registered for this Sunday and have received nothing as yet. I hope I get a spot but things are not looking good right now!

I went to the 3-5 PM, 5 Nov session. There were about 60 attendees. Some people received e-mail confirmation and some received SMS. I received my SMS at 1:12 PM on 5 Nov. Talk about cutting it close!
The signup web page said you should arrive 20 minutes prior to the start, but the Sony staff were running 20 minutes late instead. Late arrivals were permitted to join the class.
Cameras on offer: NEX-5 with zoom lens, Alpha 65 with zoom lens 18-85mm IIRC, and Alpha 65 with 50mm/f1.8 prime lens. I don't know how they decide who got what model but probably based on the 3 short questions at signup.
Photo ID is held as "security" in exchange for a camera. SD card is 4GB Sony SDHC class 4.
Format of the workshop
(1) Registration and get a SD card and a camera.
(2) Find a seat, look around, read the "postcard" (free battery and bag with camera purchased from selected stores), and play with your new toy.
(3) Presentation (tips and tricks, analyse some good photos).
(4) Split into 3 groups based on your camera type. Practise at various locations around Sydney Opera House.
(5) Showcase selected works from us, with brief critique from the presenter.
(6) Hand back camera, keep SD card, receive a gift (USB stick in the shape of a NEX), get back photo ID, say goodbye.

Just got the email as well :-)
NOTE: There is a mistake if you are attending the 12pm session tomorrow (Saturday 5th) - it lists the time as 9am - I have notified the organiser and she advised that a new email correcting the time will be sent soon…
I wouldn't want people to wake up early on a Saturday for nothing ;-)

personoftheyear on 04/11/2011 - 18:37 ¶What else do we need? I signed up for tomorrow but didn't get a confirmation. Thinking of just rocking up…

personoftheyear on 05/11/2011 - 19:09 ¶Yup, I just turned up and said that I registered online. The guy checked my name on the list but it wasn't there… still let me in though.
There was about 60 people that turned up and the lecture was decent, doesn't seem like a sales pitch at all although all the cameras we tried out were Sony's models. So first hour was inside the studio and the photographer explained aperture, and camera speed, showed some photos, etc Second hour was spent outside around the opera house taking photos with the Sony Cameras. We then meet up again and reviewed the photos. We got to keep the 4GB SD memory card and they also gave out a cool miniature model camera that has a flash light. So I would say it was worth going.

The model camera toy is both a mini LED light as well as a 2GB USB stick. Flip open the black "LCD screen" and a white slider underneath will let you eject the USB connector to the side.
On the USB stick are brochures for Alpha 65, 77, NEX 5, 7, and brief lecture notes.
personoftheyear on 06/11/2011 - 01:34 ¶Are you sure it's a USB stick? I can't seem to plug it into the USB slot of my laptop…

Yes I am sure it is a 2GB USB stick. How else would I know it contains brochures and lecture notes?
Eject the white connector to the side and examine it. The back side is all plastic but the front side has the 4 legs of an USB plug.
Push the correctly-orientated connector into an USB socket while holding the slider mechanism with your thumb, otherwise friction will push the connector back into the "camera". Yes, the design is bad.
bargainsniper on 05/11/2011 - 13:06 ¶So where is this held? It says Opera House, but Opera House is pretty big
personoftheyear on 05/11/2011 - 19:13 ¶Studio Room…as you approach the Opera House from Circular Quay, just keep walking all the way straight until you see a small outdoor Sony Photo Exhibition then turn right and enter the building

Hi, I signed up for this and was accepted and notified by text. I didn't get any further information, though. Due to a "misplacement" during a recent house move I actually don't have any photo ID, do you think this will be a major issue? I wasn't aware I required it until reading the posts in here. I plan to take a bank statement which will hopefully work.

Since they lent you a camera to take photos of the Opera House exterior, your photo ID is used to verify your identity as well as a collateral to ensure that you don't run away.
I think the staff will be very reluctant to lend you a camera with a bank statement which cannot be used to verify your ID and which is re-printable (and can be forged easily). Perhaps they will accept a credit/ATM card plus a Medicare card plus something with your name & address?
I am just guessing, so no guarantee that it will work.

One problem may be that there are a limited number of cameras available on loan and it is one camera per student. If none is available then you do not get to practise. The staff may decide to give priority to people who are on the list (they have a 5-page list of names to check off), and you may end up without a camera.
In this case, what is the point of attending? You will learn more theoretical knowledge from a good book than from a 1/2 hour talk. The value of this workshop is in the hands-on pratice session.
YadaYadaYada on 07/11/2011 - 09:42 ¶I did not get a confirmation but a friend who registered after me did. On hearing that other someone else from ozbargain turned up without registering, I did as well. It turned out that my name was on the list, but they didn't send me out an email because my mobile number was non existent (because I don't have one).
I also heard in the morning someone asking about joining the class - a staff member said it was probably ok, but they might not have enough cameras. But you could just join the class and listen if you wanted.

Had a good time this afternoon. You must register before attending. A doorman will ask you to wait outside if you havent registered as there are not enough cameras for all participants. Make sure you sign up for the right one… if you already know the your trade craft, don't attend the basic course where people will ask what Auto-focus, aperture, ISO, shutter speed mean etc. The master class the speakers gave us a lesson on rule of thirds, composition, spacing, depth of field etc. The Sony public exhibits are in the foyer and outside the Opera House.
