Brother MFC Laser Printer. Problem with Non-Genuine Toner

My Brother printer (MFC-L2713DW) refuses to work today, after printing fine using non-genuine toner (from ebay seller yyuda) for a few weeks already.

Printer displays message "no cartridge" or "no toner" or "cannot detect"

I've done resets using this instruction but still no good.

possibly an auto firmware update messing things up? I'm not sure if it did an update or not, but understand that can cause issues.

So..any ideas what the problem might be, how to confirm and how to resolve?

cheers for any help

  • Try ask the seller? Any advice from the seller?

    • I've messaged but nothing back yet.

  • This works on the Samsung M3870FW , might be worth a shot.
If you first put it in and it reports "Toner not Compatible" pull it out, turn the laser off, pullout the power cord from the unit and leave it off for 10 minutes then plug the power cord back in, put the toner back in then power the unit back on . This resets the unit and gets rid of all the stored memory.
Now the toner is accepted and works great.

    • I'll give it a go.

on a related note, I switched the power off to printer over the weekend, which I haven't done before. maybe that's screwed it up somehow.

      • Main point "pullout the power cord from the unit and leave it off for 10 minutes"
        Good Luck

        • gave it about 25 and no luck. thanks anyway.

  • Might be a hardware issue.
Brother detects toners using the mechanical way or a sensor most of the times, except for some inkjets which have chip in-built.

Haven't done much research for this model but most of them has some infread sensor installed somewhere - that's why you can reset the toner using the menu method.

    • This one needs a chip. The toner I purchased came with the chip, but for others you transfer the old chip. eg. below.

      https://www.smarttoner.com.au/index.php?route=product/produc…

I'd try transferring, but the old toner went in the bin weeks ago.

I'm not ruling out a hardware issue though. My kids are known to play with the printer so may have messed it up somehow. Toner and drum seems to all go in fine though so nothing obviously wrong.

My MFC-L2750DW unit received a firmware update in the last week. So you most likely had one as well.

BTW there is no auto update, only a auto check advising there is a firmware update. You might have just clicked on it recently when trying to do something else.

Could just be the 'chip' the printer checks happen to die on you as part of bad luck? Do you have any other toners to try?

    • I don't recall seeing any update but certainly could have happened without me knowing. Machine says version 'Q'…but not sure if that's new or not.

No other toner unfortunately. Old one binned and a new spare, ordered 10 days ago from same seller, still in transit.

edit: according to this the latest Firmware is 'R', released 06/08/2020.

I'd say the firmware update suspicion is looking less likely now, otherwise I'd be on R, not Q.

Going by the website, Q firmware has been around for a while, so yeah don't think its a firmware update.

Most likely a bad toner. Have you taken it out, given it a shake and a few taps on the bench in case something has jammed up, pulled the power out of the printer and then put it all back together again?

        • cheers for the info.

I think I've found the problem. The chip on the toner has a tiny little L521 battery which is only is measuring <1v. It should be 1.5v.

now I just need to get a replacement battery or rig something up to test

          • @watts: Oh that will do it! Hopefully a easy fix to bring it back to life again.

Problem solved. Turned out to be a flat battery in the cartridge chip.

My previous order of spare toner arrived today so I swapped out new chip into problem cartridge and all good now.

    • Great to hear.
I didn't know that the cartridge chip came with a battery - you learn something every day.

      • Neither did I.

        • Can the battery of the cartridge be changed manually? Which battery (code) does it use?

Hey Mate, is your printer still working fine with compatible cartridges? I see that Brother did block printers from using non genuine cartridges. Thanks.
