Woolworths Mobile Prepaid ½ Price Sim and Recharge Offer - $2 SIM + $29 Recharge Now $15.50

851

Guys if you are already using Woolies Prepaid Cap for mobile phones then this has to be worth something, except it feels kinda wrong.

Basically the offer is “BUY A WOOLWORTHS MOBILE $2 SIM and $29 RECHARGE VOUCHER FOR $15.50”
http://catalogues.bigw.com.au/portal/offerdetails/woolworths…

Now I don’t need the SIM, but the vouchers yeah (I have three teenagers using that plan…)

So I guess I have to buy a bunch!

If you are thinking of doing the same, please return the SIMs (like just hand them back) to Woolies – it would be wasteful to just toss the SIM (packaging, carbon footprint etc.)

If you are shopping for a prepaid plan, this is worth looking at as it has a 45 day expiry and a whopping 5GB.

Mod: Deal has been extended to Jan 14

  • Good deal.

The total is $12.60 if you show your everyday reward card

  • If you are shopping for a prepaid plan, this is worth looking at as it has a 45 day expiry and a whopping 5GB.

is there any option for longer expiry day as i only need for mobile data, even 2gb is fine? ie. 3 months or 6 months?

btw don't throw the sim you can benefit from this >>> http://www.smsglobal.com/en-au/

  • +'ve for your devious nature first timer. what a good first post.

  • +1

Where? Link above has bigw in URL but redirects.
    Only at BigW? at supermarkets?

  • Where to buy this deal lol? And strictly one per customer or I can buy at my discretion? Coz I don't see any limitations whatsoever here?

    • Only available at Woolworths and Safeway Supermarkets, BIG W, Dick Smith, participating Caltex Woolworths co-branded fuel outlets.

wouldn't be hard even if it was one per customer

    • Dick smith, woolies,big w, woolies petrol,safeway

      EDIT : beaten

  • pity im still stuck with these vodafone pocket wifi :(

    • unlock for free on voda website and flop the woolies sim in for some good value win.

      • unfortunately that didn't work on both of my devices
        no luck for me :(

      • NO they will not unlock it free - a very small number of people say they've managed to do it without charge via the website, but the majority have not, and vodafone will tell you there is a $75 charge.

That being said, the 007 gmail dude's $15 code works.

  • Quite tempting, thanks. So it seems this has to be purchased from Woolies between 10 and 16 Nov, but when do the SIM and recharge have to be activated by? Is it 31/12? In which case the usage lasts until mid Feb, is that right? It's not all clear to me.

  • thanks imax - yes i get ozbargain - long time stalker first time walker

p.s. the vouchers have a 1 year expiry - so it would be kinda pointless buying too many…

    • What does this sentence in the T&C mean then?

Offer starts 9am AEDST 10/11/2011 and ends 11:59pm AEDST 31/12/11.

Does it mean the SIM and voucher have to be used before the new year?

  • $2 SIM + $29 recharge for $15.50
Sale ends 16 November, but 'offer' ends 31/12/11???

    • Weird… my catalogue says runs till 31/12/2011 midnight

  • Great find O.P thank you again!

  • greenpossum - the catalogue fine print says the half price voucher offer is until 31/12/11. Technically (as I see it)you could buy 8 of these on the last day of the year, activate one SIM then, and have a mobe/data plan for a year for $124 - and of course hand the remaining 7 SIMs back :)

    • Ok, but if that's the case what's this about 10 Nov to 16 Nov in the catalogue? See why I'm confused? So is brucefromaustralia.

      • +2

        I'm just confused! LOL
The 10-16 November is the validity of the catalog & probably the sale.
        I assume it could mean…
this '1/2 price sale' will continue until the end of year
OR SIM must be connected under this offer by end of year
OR $500 included value condition with recharge is only 'offered' until end of year (that is most likely condition imho - it may continue, or be altered)
        I am still confused!

  • well the paper version seems to contradict the web page version (no date i can see in paper version)

  • Note - I seem to recall that you are not allowed to own more than a certain number of SIMs. I seem to think it's either 4 or 8 of them.

Each time you get a SIM, you have to sign up, show proof of identity, etc.

GRRR - Where did I read about that maximum quantity? Help me somebody!

    • I think that refers to ACTIVE SIMS. I have so many here, but only a couple active.

    • I hate it whenever someone brings a sim to the counter because of the ID requirements. Unfortunately it's a legal requirement.

      • I've purchased SIM cards from petrol stations and have never been asked for ID. It's only when you try to activate the SIM that you need to provide ID.

    • mentioned in the Optus Incredible S $269.10 posting. 4 per 6 months.

  • +1

If you go over the data amount, you get charget like $30 a MB. WTF.

    • +3

      or not…it's prepaid LOL

    • +1

How can they charge you when it's a prepaid? Doesn't your data access just cease?

      • They can take money from your prepaid balance until it reaches $0.

        • Fair enough, that's probably the GPRS rate and it will get eaten up in seconds so best not to get into that situation in the first place by turning off GPRS if you have little data allowance left.

That's actually what happened to me on the $2 Telstra SIM offer. The bonus data had expired and I had a few bucks balance left. I turned on the phone and it started downloading updates and pretty soon the money was gone. Oh well, it was monopoly money anyway, I already had my fun for $2.

  • noone can possibly know how many inactive sims you have

    • post deleted

  • 5 freaking gigabytes for $15.50?! about a year ago I was paying 3x for the same amount on Optus Wireless Broadband..

Definitely grabbing a few sims & vouchers! thanks @debo!

  • +10

Careful of that supposed 5Gb of data, as it is measure in 1Mb increments (yes - 1Mb, so that 1kb push notification counts 1000 x more data than it actually uses!

    eg;

6 automatic checks per hour (facebook/twitter/gmail/weather push)

    1 hour - 6Mb 1 day = 144 Mb 45 days 6,480Mb - over the limit BEFORE actually doing anything

compared to TPG or LiveConnect with 10kb increments

    1 hour - 0.06Mb 1 day = 1.44 Mb 45 days 64.8Mb

So even a low cost 1Gb plan from another provider, whilst not sounding as good, will actually use a hell of a lot less data.

    Also just note what the 'cap' can/cannot be used for;

A maximum of $29 (for a $29 recharge) or $49 (for a $49 recharge) can be used for premium SMS and content, Optus Zoo content usage charges, video calling, 966 and satellite calls

The nasty data counting is why I am negging. Sorry…

    • +2

      jeezzz it's $15.50 for 5 GB

      don't stress…

      • But you won't GET 5Gb is what I am saying!

Also, once you go over your '5Gb', it takes $2 from your cap per 1Mb… so factor that in as well. Personjally I reckon these plans stink.

        • No surcharge whatsoever here mate…

        • Point taken :)

        • -2

What do you mean no surcharge?

          http://www.woolworthsmobile.com.au/woolworths-prepaid-cap/29…

Mobile internet access within Australia: 5GB included, then $2 per 1MB increments

        • It's their mistake decidedly. How come they can charge you, tell me? And I have never been charged any, just cannot access the Internet anymore after all the data has been used up.

        • +3

They take the excess from your cap, so they can easily 'charge' you. Once you use your 5Gb, every Mb afterwards comes off your $500 cap. It's not rocket science, and negging me for ignorance - well, whatever.

        • +3

As someone actually on the plan, i can tell u that u do get 5gb. The 1mb increments havent been applied from my pov (otherwise i wont be replying this on my phone). Of cos i wont be able to guarantee they wont be changing this i the future. If they do ill just switch since its a prepaid

        • on my optus mytab plan 1Mb increments mean min 1Mb PER DAY (not per push notification)

    • +1

Where does it say it measures its data in 1Mb increments (ie each data access counts as 1Mb)?

I know it says "5GB included, then $2 per 1MB increments", but my Telstra plan also says "$2/Mb" but it takes data usage off per kilobyte. In the absence of any other info, I would read that as the same as the Telstra prepaid data. Measure in kilobytes and charge per 1Mb.

Have you actually used this plan (or know someone who has) and seen the data usage taken off as 1Mb per access?

      • +1

Yes… i used the Virgin one, and wondered why I used 300 Mb in 2 days not doing much at all…

    • 1 hour - 6Mb 1 day = 144 Mb 45 days 6,480Mb - over the limit BEFORE actually doing anything

That's only if you disconnect each time. Check your phone settings if that happens.

      • +1

This is exactly the right point here! If you disconnect your 3G/HSPA connection after every little interaction, each new tiny bit of download will count as a new increment. Just keep you mobile data connection on all the time, and don't worry about the 1MB increments. Even if you turn data off every night, you'll only use the minimum of 1MB per day. The problem may arise if you are going in and out of WiFi coverage a lot during the day. Usually by default, if WiFi is available, your phone will switch to that and disconnect the 3G/HSPA. So if you are on Wife, walk out of the WiFi coverage for a tick, bang! there goes another 1MB since you started a new mobile data session (This is assuming you have enabled automated mobile data connections). I am surprised this concept is still so little understood.

  • +3

dude (as OP and first time poster) i need to say this post is not about the plan - it is about getting half price vouchers - very interesting advice re 1MB increments but don't neg the post based on the plan…

    • OP, ignore epicaricacy! This is a good find and certainly a good deal. Good spotting and well done! Heck even $29 is not bad for the 5GB even at 1MB increments! Don't forget to show your Everyday card when you need to topup later to get -10% off the regular $29 topup!

  • -3

I can kind of see what you mean, but just because something is half price, doesn't necessarily make it a deal. It's a good deal compared to their normal price, but still not a good deal.

The voucher is for the plan, therefore the deal is for the plan. Even at $14.50, there are better options out there for less money.

  • "there are better options out there for less money"….
    please do tell…

    • TPG - http://www.tpg.com.au/mobile/plans.php

especially if you use them for Broadband, as you get $4 off

For example, I get $550 worth of calls and 1.5Gb data for $14.99. Although it is 1.5Gb data, it is billed in 10kb increments, not 1000kb increments - makes a huge difference as I explained above.

      http://liveconnected.com.au/
billed per 1kb… so even better (although does have an excess data cost of 45c per Mb)

      $15.99 per month
      $650 call/text anyone, $900 call liveconnected
      6000 texts included
Unlimited Myspace, Twitter, Facebook, FourSquare, Linked In and eBay.

      $10.99
$450 call anyone $450 call liveconnected
      1.5Gb data
Unlimited Myspace, Twitter, Facebook, FourSquare, Linked In and eBay.

Call rates etc almost identical to Woolworths

      • +3

you forgot the part where you have to pay $20 get the sim card

      • +2

45 day expiry with your TPG? I doubt it. This woolies mobile $29 cap is golden. I'm on to my third 45 day period, and whenever I check my usage, it matches pretty closely to what the 3G watchdog app on my android phone is telling me. It would seem that it's measured in 1MB increments per session, as mentioned elsewhere here. So as long as you stay connected to their data network for 1mb worth of data at a time, you'll be fine. If it's constantly dropping in and out (or you're turning it off and on a lot), then there may be issues.

Closest I've got to my 5gb per 45 days was 75% used. The woolies mobile is good value data wise at the normal price, and great value at $15.50. Just sucks that you have to give over all your ID again for each sim card.

        (TPG rocks for adsl2+ though! :D )

  • so if you buy more then one of this package, do you just keep recharge the same sim? never used prepaid hence not sure how recharge voucher works!

anyone know how long the voucher last, will they expiry if you buy more then 1?

  • +1

I wonder if the recharge component ($14.50 for $29) can be combined with their 10% off recharges for everyday rewards cardholders? http://www.woolworthsmobile.com.au/why-woolworths-mobile/eve…

LOL, probably not but worth a try, could potentially make it $14.05 once you factor in the $1 for the sim @ 50% off..

Anyone know how long the recharges are valid for before I have to "activate" them in case I pick up a few?

    • +6

Anyone know how long the recharges are valid for before I have to "activate" them in case I pick up a few?

Don't know, but make sure you copy the receipts or note the recharge codes. It would be a bugger to pull them out in a few months and find they'd faded away to nothing.

    • I wonder if the recharge component ($14.50 for $29) can be combined with their 10% off recharges for everyday rewards cardholders?

+1 for thinking like an Ozbargainer. :)

      • I was wondering that too.. though the conditions seem to be conflicting.
On the BigW website they say "Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer." and yet on the WoolworthsMobile website http://woolworthsmobile.com.au/terms-conditions (point 3.) they say you can.

    • YES, reward card = $14.05, just got one. Asked DS how long recharge valid for = don't know :(

      • So it's $1.45 off, not $2.90 off as some people below seem to have obtained? Couldn't you talk them into 10% off the normal recharge price?

        • yeah, at least thats I got charged - $14.05. Which still GREAT :)
Not sure WOW would be happy if you were given discount on RRP rather than what you actually paid :)

      • It says it on the voucher

        • thanks @salem, NOT on my Dick Smith voucher. Where did you get yours from ?

        • +1

I got mine from Woolies itself. Girl at the counter said they get in trouble if they don't fill in the license details on their screen when they sell a sim, so it might be a different system to DS since you said you didn't have to show ID at DS?

        • $14.05 at DS but register could not process multiple vouchers (8) at this price easily so walked up to Big W where $12.60 was the scanned price and then was given additional discount for no apparent reason so all up 8 for around $90.
          Thanks OP.

  • +3

i have some recharge vouchers here and the expiry date for the voucher is 12 months from purchase date

    • +3

      Same +1

      • Mine expire 1/11/12, but I bought them on 10/11/11

I've been ripped off 9 days! :O lol.

  • +4

The 1MB increments has been discussed at great length for the last 3 months, and users are not seeing any problems http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1746883
I'm on this, and can't get through 5Gb of data with plenty of facebook, twitter, gmail, weather, safari, tethering, radio streaming, youtube, downloads of apps and torrents
Can't fault it - optus is great in my area - great deal at $15.50

  • has anyone worked out when is the last day you can buy this deal? after catlogue finish in Nov or last day in dec?

  • -1

what is the network wollies use, if its vf or optus im pretty sure you could not even use the 5gb of data in a month

    • It is on the optus network. The 1mb increments looks scary. But i have been on this since they came out about 3 months ago. I havent been able to use even 1gb despite accessing webpages every day. In fact i have only used about 400mb in one month. So definitely a plus from me

      • I'm on my 3rd month too and I NEVER turn-off data - its ALWAYS ON and while I don't sit on You-Tube day-in day-out, I do email, surf, download docs, sync loads of stuff regularly and I'm still to hit 1gb usage in 45days. DON'T WORRY about 1mb increments, as @salem suggests, don't turn off data.
Look, give it a go, worst case, you've done $14.05 and some time to setup.

    • +1

if its vf or optus im pretty sure you could not even use the 5gb of data in a month

I could easily download 5G in one day on Voda or Optus. Voda can get slow at peak times, but 5GB in one day is still not hard with big files. YMMV. You could use Telstra for web, and woolworths for everything else.

  • Does anyone know if a Woolworths sim card will work in an Optus pre-paid phone like the HTC Incredible S? Or does the phone have to be unlocked first?

    • should work, but can't guarantee it.

      • Well lets just say yes…but that it based on my optus locked HTC Incredible S

        hehe. (y m m v)

  • +2

Just loaded up on 14 of these at Canberra Centre Big W - enough for two people for a year. The vouchers expire 1 Nov 2012.

    • Also got 1 sim and 1 re-charge in Melbourne, Woolies didn't know anything about it, but BigW did. A second re-charge on the same transaction went through as full price, so I just got one. No ID required.

      • +1

Forgot to mention the 10% off with the everyday rewards cards works with the offer too.

        • what do you mean by did a second recharge on the same transaction and it went thru as full price?

can everyone confirm that I can by multiple recharges to use next year?

      • That's probably because you only get the 1/2 price if you buy both. I don't know if they'll let you buy 2 SIMs and 2 recharges in one transaction, prolly depends on the store, but you could always do it in two goes.

    • +2

Congratulations! I think you just invented the 12-month Woolies Mobile contract plan ;)

Except the best bit is, it's a real cap, so if you try and spend over, you can't. Not a post-paid 'cap' where if you go over it it just costs you heaps.

  • +3

Bought them at Woolworths without any issue. The discount is already in the system so when the $2 SIM card and $29 recharge is purchased it will discount $15.50.

Also, if you use Everyday Rewards card, it will discount you another $2.90.

So, effectively it is only $12.60.

    • Excellent, thanks. And of course if I buy another $17.40 of stuff from Woolies, I'll get a 4c petrol voucher.

    • actually the price is $14.05 =
      - 10% off $15.50 = $13.05
      - $1 for SIM
      Total = $14.05

      How do you get $12.60

NOT sure if you can get multiple recharges without $1 SIM ? either way, lets enjoy the great offer :)

      • $14.50 - $2.90 (10% normal price) + $1.00 for the SIM.

I think maybe the trick is to whip out the Everyday Savings card at the last moment and claim 10% off normal price. :)

      • Followup: I got it for $12.60 at Woolies and I didn't have to do anything special, the system took $2.90 off when the checkout chick swiped the ER card. I did have to present my driver's licence though to buy the SIM. I bought > $17.40 worth of groceries so I also got 8c off petrol (special till 25/11).

Tip: If you are also buying groceries, go to the service counter first, because normal checkouts can't process your ID.

  • +1

$12.60 with Everyday card - almost stealing! and nickmiller - you know what you're doing! I am buying a bunch as well just have to design a spreadsheet to get optimum number :)
