+3 votesIn terms of CPU/GPU raw power, iPod Touch 4g is similiar to iPhone 4. iPod Touch also has a better resolution screen.
LG Optimus One, in terms of CPU/GPU raw power is like iPhone 3G (not even 3GS). You can pretty much forget any HD game on this device. Crazy John's one for $89 is very well priced. Question is… do you want a iPhone 3G like device for $89.
This phone is up against some competition though. For example, Huawei X3 for $99 - similiar specs, smaller in size. And… Acer Liquid Metal - $128… which is in a completely different league (iPod Touch 4g like performance with phone features (inc. HSPA+)).

Fully charge the phone.
Plug the phone to your PC using the USB cable.
Download and install the USB drivers.
Download, install and run the PC Sync program.
Establish a connection between the program and the phone.
Backup your phone data just in case. (I didn't have to restore anything, but you never know.)
It will check the version on the phone then offer to update.
Go do something else while it downloads about 100MB of data.
Click confirm to install the update.
Your phone will download the data, update and reboot.
Restore any settings that were lost.Voila.
camelgrass on 16/11/2011 - 00:07 ¶Greenpossum, did you find that after updating to 2.3 (official update) the auto-correction function of the android keyboard no longer works? This happened in my case and it seems to be a widespread issue from my research online. The update can't be reversed back to 2.2 either (without custom rom). The only solution I found was to download the gingerbread keyboard from android marketplace
I don't find the phone any faster on gingerbread compared to froyo but the battery life seems to have improved slightly.
greenpossum on 16/11/2011 - 00:37 ¶What's the auto-correction function? Something to do with the dictionary? I don't think I enter enough text to notice.
camelgrass on 16/11/2011 - 01:49 ¶Auto correction is a feature when you misspell a word it automatically corrects it for you based on what it thinks you meant to write.
I'm lost without it especially when typing quickly on a qwerty keyboard on a small 3.2 inch screen. It's not that l'm bad at spelling, more so it's too easy to hit the wrong key.
greenpossum on 16/11/2011 - 06:57 ¶I don't enter that much text on my phone. If I want to write a lot, e.g. a blog, I would probably tether a netbook to my phone. BTW do you know if Bluetooth keyboards are supported properly in Gingerbread?
greenpossum on 15/11/2011 - 11:33 ¶Do a search on OzBargains for previous discussions on this model. Of course its value may have changed with the advent of newer models on the market.

maxdestructo574 on 15/11/2011 - 12:05 ¶I bought one of these from CJ's in February and despite their assurances that it was locked to Vodafone, my TPG sim worked straight away.
It is very likely (though not a guarantee) that the ones they are selling now are still unlocked.
$89 is a straight up steal for a handset I paid $279 for 9 months ago. No issues with it at all, excellent bang for buck.

Optimus One's sold from November 2011 onwards are network locked:

vietorious on 15/11/2011 - 18:26 ¶$99 @ Big W locked to Virgin/Optus.
From new catalogue starting tomorrow
some_one_some_where on 15/11/2011 - 18:34 ¶Virgin only, and you may have issues using Optus sim there! And its been $99.00 with Virgin for some time now.
Shadowsfury on 15/11/2011 - 20:47 ¶I've never heard of a phone being locked by MVNO (e.g. Virgin/TPG/LiveConnected/whatever), only by carrier (i.e. Telstra/Optus/Voda)
camelgrass on 16/11/2011 - 00:20 ¶Some ozbargain users have reported that certain virgin phones will accept only virgin SIMs.
+10 votesb1ackmai1er on 15/11/2011 - 21:01 ¶The LG Optimus One is also available from Dick Smith for $99. Locked to Virgin (Optus network) with $10 credit. It comes with 2Gig micro sd card (upgradable to 32Gig). I found this screen size ok but would definitely wouldn't get anything smaller
You can get an unlock code from ebay for less than $3 - I used these guys this week -

You can get rooting and rom info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15309588#po...
This is a good rom/kernal to install: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325386
This is another good kernal to run: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049518
The /forum.xda-developers.com provides pretty good support for the LG O1

Wow, this one keeps dropping. I shouldn't look or I'll regret what I paid. Just kidding.
Incidentally I upgraded mine to Gingerbread the other night and it works better.
