Weird noise from my Mazda 2

I have this weird noise from my Mazda 2.
Last night when I was just entering my driveway, had this weird noise for a few secs,so stopped my car and changed the transmission to neutral and again to drive, the sound disappeared.
Today, similar situation, wherein I was driving to work and suddenly this sound came up again.
Found nearest parking spot and changed the transmission to neutral and then parking, then after a few seconds, changed it back to drive and the sound just disappeared.
Got the sound on mydashcam.

  • Sounds like someone groaning in the back seat?

Could also be tyres scraping something in the wheel arches? Sometimes the plastic trim in the arches comes loose and scrapes the tyres. And if the noise is mainly when turning slightly it could be the front wheels pivoting enough to contact whatever is scraping.

Once had a weird noise in my 4x4 but it was a branch lodged underneath and banging in the wind when going fast enough.

Haha no, it was something from the front.
So this sound starts when you're driving and pressing the acc, when you release, it goes off.
And then you acc again, this sound comes up.
So after parking and changing it to neutral and back to drive again, it goes off.
This is not a constant sound though.

      • So do you also experience the noise when stationary? Hopefully not something wrong with transmission, that would be expensive.

        • Nothing when stationary, just a few seconds while driving [as in the video]
Has happened twice since last night[where I was almost about to enter my driveway], but both the time was at slow speeds. So was able to park safely and change it to neutral and then back again to drive.
[ Now when I go back to drive : it drives fine]

  • Is your Mazda still under warranty?

I'm not knowledgeable about cars, but that sound was quite funny

    • Funny until you're on 80+ plus zone and this sound comes up.

    • +1

Agreed, I laughed. Sounds like a goat under the car.

  • Sounds to me like either something is not meshing/engaging properly or a bearing is on its way out.

I hope I'm wrong because it'll be an expensive fix.

    • I just hope it's not. But the funny part is it just comes up for a few seconds and then after the parking procedure, drives well.

    • I know nothing about cars, but definitely sounded like a frequency produced by vibration, perhaps the result of friction where there shouldn't be friction.

That or rubber stretched over metal.

  • manual or auto? im gonna guess manual…. could be clutch related (release bearing)

    • I'm guessing you're wrong

changed the transmission to neutral and then parking, then after a few seconds, changed it back to drive a

    • OP has mentioned drive and neutral, so I assume auto.

Just turn stereo volume up to 11.
    Fixed

    • Haha, Only if all the car problem could be solved just like that.

  • Just stop into a local mechanic shop let them listen

Have you looked around the car while it’s running? Anything wierd hanging down. Can you hear it while the car is idling from outside. Have someone else press the go pedal while stationary and have a close listen outside.

    • Unfortunately, both the times I was driving solo, so didn't have anyone to do the pedal for me.
And by the time i come home or park to check, the sound is gone.

Sounds like a zombie locked up in the trunk

    • Reminds me of the urban myth about the body of a Japanese car factory worker discovered in the boot. He was wearing a white dust coat and white gloves. Somehow got trapped in the boot during the final inspection 🙄

  • Sounds like torque converter problem. Maybe check or change transmission fluids

  • +1

Could be a stick or something stuck in the front wheel near the discs area, had that before.

  • Sounds like a bad wheel bearing.

  • You'll need to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. Enlist someone to help you.

My guess is a belt rubbing on something.

  • Have you checked for the obvious things like plastic guard liner rubbing on tyre, undertray hanging down and scraping road?

    • It would be a constant noise. In this case,I have the noise go away after stopping my car and putting it on neutral.

      • So is the noise still there when the car is stationary? Your description is confusing, and the video only shows it while the car is in motion.

        • Nope, the noise goes off when the car is stationary and put into neutral.
The video shows how the noise starts suddenly while driving.
So after my car is put into neutral when stationary, now when I start driving again, there's no sound.

  • What has your mechanic said? lol

  • If it has done 150k then it’d need a transmission oil change

Could be something like a broken engine/transmission mount causing a something to rub somewhere it shouldn’t when the engine is accelerating or decelerating. Popping in neutral would mean the engine is sitting still and not loaded like when driving.

  • Mate, most of the comments above are just garbage and clearly love to waste time.

If you're hearing these issues while accelerating this is clearly related to the transmission.
Given its an Auto, there's a few things that need to be checked. Input Shaft, clutch plate and shift solenoid.

If you have a OBD2 scanner its basically the only way as a consumer to see if you have any error codes otherwise you'll need a mechanic to do a transmission check and see if it needs to be completely replaced (which is most likely)

    Hope this helps.

    • Won't most error codes trigger the check engine light?

    • You have no idea đź‘Ť

Alternator bearing, accessory belt pulley bearing, air conditioner pump bearing, fan blower motor bearing, transmission input shaft bearing… Too hard to tell from the video, but it doesn't seem to change as the car slows down.

Does the sound rise and fall with road speed? (Gearbox, diff or wheel bearing noise)
Does it rise and fall with engine speed? (engine related bearing noise, A/C, Alt, Acc drive)
Does it just stay constant when it's happening? (cabin related noise, fan, HVAC motors)
Does it only make noises over undulating/rough surfaces? (suspension bushings)

  • Mazda 2 has many things electronic these days.
Get it checked out by a mechanic.

Nobody here is going to solve this mystery

    • Mechanic too busy. Have booked an appointment though.

    Acutally I have the answer!

Sounds like a bad case of COVID-19

Hence take your car to the nearest COVID-19 drive-in check point.

Get them to take a swab in the air intake just before the throttle body and also one at the exhaust pipe.
Wait 24 hrs for test result

    • And let it alone for a few days for self quarantine ?

  • What was it op?

    • Apparently, the sound never came up after the incident as posted in the video. Showed the video to the mechanic and he was like it's very difficult to tell the sound unless he actually hears it.
Also he checked up the fluid levels, so found out that auto transmission fluid was low, so topped that up. So,his suggestion was might be the ATF, and suppose if that sounds comes again,he asked me to visit then.
