  • Really well reviewed amp!

    https://youtu.be/6Zuynm3o3vs

I have the THX 789 which I love, and I'm sure this would be on par if not better.

    • I have been keeping an eye for it and yes it is a good price.
I have ordered one - maybe this worth a separate post

  • I've had this amp for almost a year and it's excellent.

  • Relieved to see this is not significantly better than the Atom. Didn't need an excuse to spend!

    • Where'd you buy your Atom from?

      • Got it direct from JDS Labs. Took only a couple of days to arrive. Would recommend.

    • Its advantage over the Atom is the ability to run balanced. If you have no plan or need to do that, the Atom should be fine, but I would still look at the Magni 3+.

      • Fortunately the Atom has enough juice to feed my headphones, so no need really! Unless there's other positives to balanced that I'm not aware of?

I had a Magni 2 before the Atom, and comparing them back to back left me really disappointed with the Magni! Maybe things have just come a long way since, but it was quite a difference.

        • Unless there's other positives to balanced that I'm not aware of?

It increases headphone impedance and when properly implemented can remove hum and noise from the signal. If there's an exceptionally long cable run or a lot of EM-interference nearby, it might be the only choice for some.

If a headphone can be run balanced and the balance output is properly made or runs better on a given amp, there tends to be some kind of audible difference, usually an improvement. Dynamics are the most common thing I've seen sighted.

Maybe things have just come a long way since

The Magni 3+ is a huge improvement for an entry level discrete amp, but not enough to replace an op-amp like the Atom or the Heresy if you already have them. It is the better starting choice, and generally a well-made discrete amp in terms of signal noise tends to also produce better output through better component matching, not just lowered signal noise.

Again, an improvement in dynamics tends to be noted. Amp selection is much more than just getting the lowest noise floor, especially once you get past a certain threshold of performance.

If you're still in the process of buying, I would recommend demoing the Heresy and the Magni 3+, and then you can use the Heresy as a reference to the Atom.

All three would be cheaper to import.

Good price. But get the Topping L30 instead.

    • Topping L30 isn't a balanced amp, is it?

      • Neither is the SP200. Yes, it has balanced ports, but not balanced internally.

        • -1

True enough but the change in impedance will alter the sound signature, and may prove favourable for a given headphone.

Also helpful if you can only run a headphone balanced.

          • @jasswolf: "Also helpful if you can only run a headphone balanced."
Sure, in that very, very, very, narrow situation.

"change in impedance will alter the sound signature, and may prove favourable for a given headphone."
2amps inside SP200 whether balanced or not. There are also comparisons online where unbalanced performs better, albeit slightly.

Bottom line, don't get SP200 because it's balance.

  • This is even cheaper tah those in china..

Not sure if anyone will see this however I have been looking at amps for a long time. I ended up settling on the AE5 sound card 18 months ago and it works great. I went this route as I had some issues with some cheaper dac/amps and the sound card just worked. I use headphones only on PC, gaming and music. Will there be a tangeble difference using this in conjunction with the AE5 or even just plane onboard audio (ALC887)? I have the HD6xx headphones.

    • +1

From a quick search the HD6xx are 300ohms but still on the easier side to drive.

To my understanding “THX” amps are known for their low noise-floor at high power outputs, so are recommended for headphones that are extremely hard to drive or sensitive IEM’s which may develop hiss where the noise-floor can be easily heard.

The AE5 seems to get a good review on Audiosciencereview forum so it seems like a well built product.

My thoughts are the AE5 is more than capable of driving the HD6xx, the only reason I can think of you needing the SP200 is if you listen at loud volumes and you need to turn your HD6xx up louder than max volume allows on the AE5.

      • Thankyou for the reply. Ive come to the conclusion that new equipment may be better but not $400 better. I just get the bug every once in a while and wonder if its worth upgrading. Maybe im better off not knowing, saving that cash and all.

        • +1

          but not $400 better.

Yes I was going to add this to my comment.
$400 is too much to spend for a little more volume.

Only way it is worth it is if you already have 5+ more extremely hard to drive headphones (which are usually expensive like Audeze LCD-series etc) or IEM’s to make full use of the benefit of THX technology.
But you are talking about a collection of headphones totaling 1000’s of dollars.

You are better off saving your money.
I own just 1 pair of Over-ear headphones and am very happy with them.
Sometimes I think about adding a pair of IEM’s, but that’s all you need. One pair for home use, and maybe one pair of IEM’s for travel etc.

Edit: I do a lot of reading / researching online, but I always conclude that if I have something to directly compare to I will raise the chances of being disappointed with both products I am comparing.
IMO for those who own many models of the same product, this ‘journey’ of comparisons etc is part of what they are paying for.
If you have a high enough income to do such things I think people can do what they want.
But this being ozbargain I think the smarter move is to research a tonne, try products in-store before buying to confirm your findings, then only buy what you will use / need.
And leave the legwork to others online.

          • @thebadmachine: Sorry to ask another question, how do you connect these amps to a PC?

            • +1

@PlagueistheCheap: It is an amp so only has analog input.
So usually you would connect the line-out into the RCA input on the amp.
But it seems on the AE5 that it only has headphone-out, which means you would plug the connect the same place you plug your HD6xx (3.5mm) to the RCA input.

But most people use their own external DAC with a proper line-out.
The AE5 only has headphone-out, so it means you are also passing the signal through the AE5 headphone amplifier, then the SP200 amp (means you will be amplifying the signal twice so you may get less quality than from a line-out)
