Driving at NSW with GoPro + Mount on Car Hood

Hi Ozb,

Sorry for being noob. Can I legally drive with GoPro mounted on my car hood? I am using the Gopro Suction cup that claims can hold up to 150mph speed.

Thank you

lol tell me when ur testing it, i'll drive behind to catch ur gopro

  • Industrial-strength suction cup proven at speeds of 150+ mph

Proven? Only implies it was attached to something at the time. They could have yeeted the mount out of a slingshot to test that.

    Recommended for non-impact activities only

Too many potholes in our roads, so good luck there.

  • Can always tie a string to your hood catch or something so that it doesnt fly into your windscreen when it comes off.

  • not all suction cups are the same.
I have tried a delkin fat gecko triple suction cup. that worked well. I was still hesitant about the gear we were attaching to it.

  • Guess its a NO. Thank you all

    • Where does it say no?

I’m guessing you can stick it on the vehicle, but there are probably some rules about not being a hazard to pedestrians in case of impact. Ie you can have a light bar on the front, but it can’t be higher than the top of the bonut thingy. Fishing rod holders cannot project forward of the bull bar and must be removed when empty. There are probably more examples.

  • Couldn't you get a dashcam?

    • I have a dashcam but I want to use it for my travel video. I did it last year at NZ without issues.

      • What will the gopro do that the dashcam can't? Still showing where you're driving?

Be about 100 times better quality. You can get it to do time lapses so you don't have to have a 10TB memory card to record the whole trip.

      • You shouldn't have any issues. They use that GoPro suction mount on track cars, I'm sure it will be fine for your needs.

        • Most of my friends mount their gopros inside the windscreen now. A few used to attach screw mounts to the grill/bull bar but it only takes one insect strike, unexpected bog hole or roost and your footage is a blurred mess.

I have seen one of the official gopro suction mounts fail too and it was before we even hit the tracks. Luckily it was also tethered to the rear wiper arm.

How do you drive at NSW? Do you take a big run up and just hold on tight when you hit NSW

    • ask QLD State of Origin team, they seem successful at it
      .

  • Technically any projection from the body would be considered illegal as it represents a hazard to pedestrians (no really, look it up) so you may get fined using it in the city etc (not to mention in some parts it's likely someone will grab it and run off while you're at the lights etc) but I think it's less likely to attract attention on a country road etc. I strongly recommend using a tether as the suction mounts have been known to fail. I think magnetic mounts are available and might work more reliably but obviously won't stock to plastic, aluminium, glass etc
