Importing a $1300 NAS from UK - how much extra in GST+Duties could I expect to pay?

$1300 in the UK, here it's >$1520

But what could I expect that price ending up as? It's not just 10% GST but also some duty fees? Would there be any saving vs the local price at the end of the day?

I recently got a NAS "QNAP TS-653D" off Amazon US. Ended up being about $700 cheaper then here and free shipping was great. GST/DUTY was included in the final amount as well. AFAIK the final price on Amazon is what you pay.

    • Yep

We will collect the Import Fees Deposit at the time of your purchase and use it to cover applicable taxes and duties on import.Learn more. Import Fees Deposit shown above may change depending on your chosen shipping option and the items in your basket during checkout.

    • It's not from Amazon though, it doesn't exist on Amazon yet.

Maybe I will just pay Aussie tax and buy it locally for $220 more

      • What Model you looking to get?

        • Synology DS1621+

      • If the difference is only $220 to buy from within Australia, then just buy it from within Australia.
The GST and duties on the import is $201.50~ (freight and insurance costs will change that)
Import duty is 5% of the value of the goods and the GST is then calculated on the value of the goods plus the import duty.
Assuming the $1300 doesn't include shipping and insurance the import duty on $1300 is $65 and GST is $136.50 for a total of $201.50.

GST will apply to shipping plus there could be a brokerage fee of around $50. For that little difference may as well buy local and have local warranty.

        • Thanks, that $1300 price was shipped price but I think I'll just look to buy locally anyway.

  • We used a forwarder last year that didn't change GST/duty.

Do a duckduck for the smaller forwarders.

    • That's just tax evasion though.

      • +1

No it's not. If the retailer or freight forwarder do less than $70k pa of business to Australia they don't need to collect GST (not that the ATO has any way of enforcing or knowing anyway). If the value is over $1k there is a chance of it being picked up at the border however.

        • When you say "chance", you say "chance" in the same as you could go shoplift and be caught by security.

Just because you don't get caught doesn't mean you didn't commit the crime.

          • @Zephyrus: No I say chance because usuallly they come straight through without any additional charges (and they should if below $1k because that's still the law). It has nothing to do with my actions, they come through customs, if customs elect not to do anything about it that's on them, not me.

      • That is a matter for the business and the tax authorities to sort out.

    • That's a good way to have your goods singled out and held for ransom $$$ by Border Force.

      • It's like a game of Froggie.

  • GST 10%, govt charges around $90, stamp duty guessing around 5%, plus admin fees for the carrier, the likes of dhl is $20, fedex is free

  • FYI: The NAS in question is the Synology DS1621+

It's a 6 bay like it's predecessor, the DS1618+ but it's AMD Ryzen CPU performs closer to the XEON in the Ds1621xs than the ATOM in the DS1618+ making it a great package if you like Synology NAS's.

Locally as I said the best price I could find is with mwave for $1,538 which is getting a bit silly for a 6 bay NAS.

Then just now I found bhphotovideo have it on pre-order for $799+32 USD ($1174 AUD before GST & Import duties) - this will still be cheaper than local prices so I'm probably going to pull the trigger. Even if Amazon do stock it soon, it's unlikely they'll be cheap. They've not been a great source of Synology NAS over the years.

  • how is fees charged?

    • Who knows, I ended up buying it locally for a few dollars extra and avoiding the hassle!

  • Hi Guys

I have just purchased Synology DS1621xs with extend to 16GB memory and two m2 snv3500 800T caches. 4x 12T ironwolf HD I can’t decide which raid format to go to, SHR with Reid 5 or SHR2 with Reid 6, any saw someone say would be better to go Reid 10 if go Reid 6… can anyone tell me some ideas on this issue, cause once you setup and it is no turning back.
