[WA] Audio Technica M70x Wired Over-Ear Studio Headphones $189 (RRP $389) @ The School Locker

190

Walked past The School Locker at Curtin Uni earlier and saw these on display on the window.

Have upgraded from the M50x to Beyer 880Ts, so I probably don't need another pair.

Seems like a good deal since they're priced cheaper than the M50x and nearly $200 off.

But at this price, you may as well go for the m70x's (assuming there won't be any sales for the m50x soon)

Or alternatively the AKG K371, which is part of the reason for this price drop.

        • How are these AKG I'm in the market for new headphones for tracking

          • +1

@bargone: For tracking you want as much isolation as possible but this comes at a cost, comfort.
Senn HD 280s are great for tracking but very painful, the DT770 are fantastic value for money and every part is replaceable, because they have a metal hinge, you can bend to suit your head size which means for long tracking sessions these are brilliant for comfort.
They sound great too and come in 3 different offerings, 32 Ohm (phone friendly) 80 Ohm (interface friendly) 250 Ohm (requires dedicated headphone amp capably of driving 250 Ohm cans).
From lowest to highest also is how they are graded in SQ, 80 are possibly best in a sweet spot being able to be used with a phone and don't require a dedicated headphone amp.
They can be used for mixing too but Massdrop has HD 6XX which excel at mixing as they're open back and allow obv for better positioning.
1st and foremost though is go and try them for yourselves, as your own ear shape will define how well a can would sound to you.

            • @[Deactivated]: Wow that is some amazing knowledge and experience and I appreciate it so much! I hope Victoria opens back up soon so I can try some on. I've heard only good things about the DT770 and probably for the reasons you stated and everything being replaceable is an amazing selling point too. Have you tried the AKG K371 and how would you compare them, are they in the same league? These are the 2 I'll be looking to try first. Thanks again for your time and knowledge

              • +1

@bargone: Sorry for the late reply, I haven't tried the AKGs, both get rave reviews on Amazon.

                https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-770-PRO-Studio-Headphone…

                https://www.amazon.com/AKG-Pro-Audio-Headphones-K371/dp/B07W…

The AKG only comes in a 32 Ohm variant which could sound less accurate than the 80 Ohm 770, this is where you need to have a listen for yourself.
Stage 4 restrictions should ease up by Nov 1st so hopefully you can indeed do this.

My major concern with the AKGs would be band pressure on your head, the Senheisser were notorious for this, painful and this is why I gave them away.
What might be suited to you will not possibly work for me. The comfort of the 770 is stellar and you can also buy after market ear cups making them even more comfortable.
1 thing I will say is all the schools I went to for audio, 4 schools in total had the DT 770s for a reason.

@[Deactivated]: Incredible, thank you so much I really appreciate your time and knowledge. It's a hard one as they both have great reviews I'd be leaning towards the 770 but will have to try them out first. Either way I'm sure I'll be happy, you made this a lot easier anyway so I'm extremely grateful to you. Thanks.

M50x does not compare, run along child

      • -1

I mean I just did compare them and they compare very well in most aspects lol

The only real difference is ever so slightly higher power. Same size driver, same frequency range which can actually be heard, similar impedance

        • +1

Dude you never compare headphones based on specs. The only relevant spec in there is basically impedence and sensitivity.

Sure it extends to 5hz but at what dB?

It doesn't give you any indication of how good it will sound.

    • +3

Those specs tell you pretty much nothing about how the headphone will sound…

  • Also the earpads aren't replaceable with standard earpads. They use this weird clip system

Tried these and they're absolutely awful. Sharp and sibilant to the point of being painful. No reason to ever get these or m50x when akg k361 and k371 exist.

    • Pretty sure Audio Technica is known for their treble-prominent tuning.

      • M50 and M70 tuning is very weird. Bloated midbass and absolutely murderous peaks in the treble region. They have plenty of bright headphones that actually sound enjoyable like the MSR7 or even M40x.

I bought my ATH-M50X back in 2015 (au$187) and I still use it today. I Can't recommend it enough. Music, movies and for gaming its just amazing for me. Ok, I will shut up just wanted to tell you guys how much I love it lol.

Try these with brainwavz pads. For general use it is a massive improvement from the oem pads.

I don't get why companies use that glorified plastic coating over fabric. It doesn't last as long, and it doesn't feel as nice and gets hot and sweaty.

      • Thanks I will buy these and try them because the original pads have some wear and tear. Cheers.

        • +1

Owned the M50x for a while and bought the big brainwavz oval pads for them. Be aware that they considerably change the sound for the worse. I think brainwavz have a new model which is designed specifically for the M50's, I'd get that instead. Yaxi or Dekoni pads are also very good options but pricey.

      • +1

The Dekoni Choice Hybrid pads are also great!

  • actually M50X,M60X, M70X and PRO7X shares the same driver, the difference among them is only tuning (or Equalization). M50x has the strongest bass and harshest treble, M70X's low frequency is very weak, and M60X is like between them. PRO7X was $139 at store dj/mannys so…..
