Never let a homie buy bronze PSU

but bronze is better than the cheapo $30 psu though….
I've been using Bronze for my PC and entering 8th year with no issue.

  • Bronze is better than non rated PSU
https://www.scorptec.com.au/bundle/Cases/ATX/917-SST-FAB1-Gp… is what i bought and have had no issues for the kids :)

    • Hey Rob,

The bundle looks pretty promising - What have your kids been paying using the 550W PSU?

Can you also let me know if it came with fans? Assuming it hasn't given that it's not mentioned - what fans have you used?

      Cheers

  • How quiet is it?

  • How reliable are Gigabyte PSUs? General consensus on the web is that you should opt for a better brand, but there isn't much in the way of actual testing. For the price though this looks pretty decent - Looking to use this for power the missus' PC which will be running a i5 2500 and GTX 960 4gb.

Would be good to hear others thoughts on this?

So the primary drawbacks of this psu is that

      • Doesn't feature a fan stop mode — the fan keeps spinning regardless of the system load. But that's really how the majority of computer PSU's operate — only the premium ones have a hybrid fan mode.

      • The cables are non-modular.

      • It has a fairly short warranty period of 3 years, which is sort of the lowest you could go. The warranty length is a good indicator of how confident the manufacturer is regarding the longevity of the power supply. The maximum I've seen is 10 years.

      • no data on the internet regarding the capacitors and where it's made. Could be solid state caps from Japan, could be Taiwanese made, but ultimately without a tear-down it's impossible to know.

the Gigabyte PB 650 watt PSU is rank C on the PSU tier list on Linus Tech Tips. Take note that has an RRP of $99.
It's likely the 550 watt model may be ranked lower.

My take: it's probably worth paying the extra $30 or $40 more on a better PSU, at least one that has extensive reviews and you know what you're getting.

        Hey Scrimshaw,

Appreciate the responses above mate! I've trawled through the web a bit and I did find the following link which did a bit of an in-depth review: https://www.techfortechs.co.uk/p650b

Capacity apparently are Japanese. Voltage tests are good but apparently the value for money and 'nice to haves' are what bring down the review.

I was looking back at other reviews and a few people spoke about it being a 'group regulated' unit (Whatever that means) which is a bit of a red flag to some.

Given my needs though I think it will be ok? Using old parts and a mid/budget level GPU. Might be worth waiting for Black Friday by the sound of it if this is no good!

    • If you're going to skimp on anything in a computer, don't skimp on the PSU, please.

Even if you think Gigabyte is reliable (anecdotally I've had many pains with them), this is a Bronze rated 550W non-modular PSU with 3 years of warranty.
