Next Dual Core Phone Price Drop?

I really like the HTC Incredible S but i want to get a Dual Core phone for "future proofing".

Is the cheapest dual core phone the Samsung Galaxy II? When is it likely to price drop further?

Cheers

Cheapest is the LG Optimus 2x as far as I know. Mainly because the stock firmware is poor, as is Nvidia's support of open source. Not usual to find this in Oz, I had to get mine from HK.

Significant further dual core price drops probably not till quad cores come onto the market in 2012.

HTC Incredible S not on the initial cut for ICS update:

  • Cool man thanks, any ETA on the quad cores?

Yeah thats another thing i dont like about the HTC Incredible S, prob lack of ICS.

I've got til March to buy a new phone.

    • The first quad core will be the HTC Edge

but honestly quadcore in a phone is not necessary

The HTC Edge is expected to hit the market in late Q1, or early Q2 of next year. We are still to find out where are we going to see it go first.

quad core is 100% necessary, with a combination of the dodgy unoptimized code of current mobile OS and the general nature of mobile OS they require further and further speed increases. My phone with a 1ghz processor should slice through everything theoretically and yet it likes to lag on switching between apps and menus?

        • Gotta love the software bloat. The memory usage and CPU utilisation of mobile phone apps have increased exponentially over the years, but the feature set and usefulness of mobile apps don't seem to follow that trend line :)

        • Android has a lot of overhead since it can't really be optimised for each device and runs on dalvik VM which itself creates a lot of overhead.

This is why Apple and Android performance is so similar, because apple only have to optimise for a few devices( and sometimes still fail) they can keep up with the performance of the android generation

"but honestly quadcore in a phone is not necessary"

Hmmm reminds me of the 640k ought to be enough for anybody line.

Hmmm reminds me of the 640k ought to be enough for anybody line.

Well it was unbelieveable** in 1979 if I remember correctly ;) Statistics and more damn statistics….

          ** 64K was absolute tops then… 8/16K the norm

        • Yeah my first VIC-20 came with 4kb of RAM…

However it's just the fact that people want things faster, smoother, smaller and cheaper. Not to mention software also gets more bloated — all the CPU power goes to eye candies rather than performing the actual task.

Quad-core 1.2GHz CPUs — that would probably be the computing power of an average server 10-12 years ago. I still remembered the 2nd server we bought in my previous company back in 2002 was a dual Pentium 3 1GHz box with 60GB of HDD space, and you'll soon be able to get quad-core Gigahertz ARM with 64GB internal storage on a razor-thin tablet. However back then we did not demand smooth scrolling and all kinds transition visual effects when we open/close windows. These days reviewers cringe when there's a slight lag between finger sweeping and scrolling.

        • This quote is so often misrepresented. It refers to the size of application code on a single process OS, not a limitation of the amount of RAM which can be used. Sure this limit was still pushed, but only because MSDos lasted longer than it should have (there are far bigger issues than this one, it was never designed to last well, even for it's time).

  • There is no such thing as future proofing, except as a sales pitch. buy what you need right now and buy it cheap.

HTC Sensation is also dual core (2x 1.2GHz Snapdragon), and can be had for $0 on Vodafone CAP29 24 month contract. Engadget reported that it would get Ice Cream Sandwich update from HTC.

    • Thanks! and thanks for all the links!

I'll keep an eye on Sensation prices. Not looking for a plan.

      • On the LG Optimus 2x $299 thread, I was recommended the Sensation z710a (supports 850/2100 Telstra & new Voda networks) AU stock for $379. This is in line with eBay AU dealers but lower cost than importers.

I suspect there will be further sales of older dual core phones like the LG 2X and 3D, plus HTC Sensation, from retailers, but who knows?

Actually history (well it was a few years back) has always been that the phone deals tend to be best in april/may

Given you have 3 months left before needing to upgrade, patience will probably pay dividends

    • SGS2 came out in April/May as well. SGS3 or something like that will be coming out Q1 next year.
