Sony Tablet S 16GB Wi-Fi for Only $450 at JB Hi-Fi

100

I thought I'll share this with Ozbargainers so everyone can benefit. I bought the Sony Tablet the other day and managed to get JB to drop the price to $450, normally $579. This is a very good price I think for the tablet.

What set this tablet apart from others is the unique wedge shape design which I find quite confortable and light to hold. It has a built in Universal remote controller using infrared sensor allowing you to control virtually any infrared enabled devices around the home which I find is a very cool feature.

Another cool feature is that you can access movies, music and videos that are stored in your PC and stream it directly to the tablet or display it directly to your DLNA enabled TV using the tablet via wireless.

One of the best purchase I've made in years.

You can possibly get it price matched at another store.

Good price for this tablet (i.e. for those who are seeking to buy Sony Tablet S). However if you are seeking to buy a tablet and have no idea what to buy, my advice is, hold your breath a bit longer and buy the Asus Transformer Prime.

    • +12

my advice is take a deep breath and write down 5 reasons why you want one and you probably wont have 5. hah

      • True. TBH usually one reason is more than enough to buy it. But some people don't even have one.

      • Quite honestly, I'm with you on this :)

      • +3

        1) Its cool.
        2) Its tells the time.
        3) I can play games on it.
        4) Its something I can play with whilst in the lift.
        5) Something to put in my Man Bag.

        SOLD!

What about the "You've got one? I've got one too" factor? :)

This should make it a lot easier to pull the trigger for those who were baulking at the high price. Having said that though, it's probably as much as this model is worth. The build quality is quite poor.

    • i have one, the build quality is really good, what are you talking about? do you even have one? if you do, tell us where do you think the build quality is poor?

I am holding one in my hand right now. It's a review unit provided to me by the Sony(X) program which has been passed along to different reviewers for a month before it got to me.

Upon arrival, I noticed that there are scratches on the screen. Searching revealed that the unit doesn't have Gorilla Glass like many other slate devices, which means that a screen protector is all but compulsory.

The plastic backing feels flimsy, and there is a rather visible seam where the "fold" meets the screen, as well as along the other 3 edges, where crap has accumulated - again, before I even got a hold of the unit.

The plastic door which covers the USB port and SD card slot is flimsy, and attached by two strands of thin flat plastic, which is just asking to be broken accidentally and can't easily be fixed or replaced without opening the device up and voiding warranty.

The power adapter is non-standard and sits loosely in its socket - yet sticks enough that it doesn't detach if you trip over it, so you can't claim that it's a conscious design choice to make it "trip proof".

… and that's just the hardware. I won't even go into software things, like how it only has 3 degrees of rotation (can't hold it horizontally, thick side down).

Is that good enough for you?

EDIT: for the record, before I get accused of being an Apple fanboy, I do not own an iPad and do not intend to.

fair enough, if u did have one, you are entitled to ur opinion and i support that, my beef is with people who only seen some online review and just jump on the band wagen.
what you discribed some are ture, but i do support that every one should have their own opinion as long as its based on facts.
          Good for you!

        • i haven't used this unit, but the part about "It's a review unit" may be a clue to the points you listed, a review or test unit is like a hire car, it's typically thrashed or abused or used/treated differently than if it was yours! take the part about the loose power socket, typical for a heavily used item, simply because some reviewers will be harder on their gear than others, like doing drop tests, or carrying around the tablet with the power adapter plugged in, etc go into a Harvey Norman/JB Hifi etc and crack open a new unit and check if the socket is loose, if it's just as loose as your review unit i'll eat my hat!(um, that's if i wore a hat!)

the other thing about not having Gorilla glass, that's not a 'poor build quality' aspect! it's a feature the device either has or doesn't have! if it was poor build quality, you would be saying that every other tablet/mobile phone/laptop etc without Gorilla glass would have 'poor build quality'! are you?!

          @morpheu:

The unit is only a month old - the program started at the beginning of November and each person only gets to have it for a week. If the issues manifest within a month of "hard use" then I assume that it will still eventually suffer from the same problems over a more prolonged period.

The loose socket is not as a result of wear and tear. The holes that grip the prongs on the plug are larger than the prongs themselves, which allows the adapter to wriggle in its socket. I think that is actually the intended mechanism to detach the plug, by twisting it. Again, being plastic, I have concerns about its longevity.

Lastly, in regards to the Gorilla Glass: OK, I concede that it's not a "build quality" issue. It's a bad design decision.

Guess what, many other tablets on the market are made of plastic just like the Galaxy Tabs 10.1 and the Transformer. The galaxy tab 10.1 actually feels cheap and flimsy compare to the more solid Table S.

  • Was $450 the lowest price they would give you ? With the build quality I was thinking maybe ~$360 would be a more appropriate price.

    • +1

That was below cost he said. The built quality is actually quite good, it's made from tough plastic. For the amount of features it comes with, it's well worth the money even at $500.

      • it would never be below cost…I never buy that crap
        but seems cheap enough

        • -1

Yep, it's cheap comparing to other tablets on the market at the moment. It's also the best Android tablet on the market according to SMH and many other reviewers.

    • why $360? why not $350 or $340? how did u come up with that number?

      • +1

        ok.lets be at $250 then

    • +1

gastronomic, when you build quality is no good. do you even have one? i been using my one from the release date, i am the kind can pick fualts with macbook pro build quality, and i am happy with the sony tablet, tell us exactly how poor is the build quality with sony tablet please…. We really would like to know.

      • I wanted to like the Tablet S, I really did. But once I actually got my hands on it I couldn't conscionably recommend it.

What you're displaying here is either choice-supportive bias or post-purchase rationalisation. Otherwise why would you give a crap what other people think if you're happy with it?

        • LOL.. it does sounds like choice-supportive bias , but infact i mistake you for the kind of people where i metioned in the reply above, again, if you did have one, you deseve to freely express your opinion, but i would say with the plastic been used to build the tablet. they did a real good job. i can't picture how it can be improved without using metal casing.

  • this is not too bad of a price. looks good as a photo frame (one reason to get it)

    • It can also doubles as a digital photo frame and an alarm clock if you got the cradle.

      • +1

or you could get a digital photo frame / alarm clock

  • +3

The build quality is quite good for what it is, plastic to keep the weight down. Use this tablet with a Sony Bravia and the results are fantastic and the DLNA is great. Awesome universal remote (which is what I bought it for) Regarding no HDMI out, when using this tablet we don't need no stinking cables.

$570 was a bit steep but then again, who cares, we live in Australia and we are floating in money.

Pop Market has it for $399 AUD under a Cyber-Monday Special (ie. direct from Sony):
    http://m.fans.sonymusicemail.com/nl/jsp/m.jsp?c=7f6a027d97e0…

Ships December 05, Shipping + handling is 29.99 AUD. Still an excellent price.
And about $20 cheaper than the OP if you feel like it!

  • +1

Terrible build quality. I mean, I have never idly speculated that something is of such low build quality without first holding it in my hands and/or owning one. I think that really speaks volumes about (amongst other things) the build quality.

I think a price of $20 would be fair.

Also note that this model does not support 10base 2 and is next to useless as a Frisbee (refer build quality issues).

  • +1

Best purchase in years? I'd place food, drink, home, car and contraceptives above a mediocre tablet but that's just me.

  • A relatively good price on one of the worst tablets you can buy in that market segment.
I'd rather get a Iconia/Xoom/Transformer and have enough change for a few memory cards.

    • -1

You obviously got no idea what you talking about. I read alot of reviews and was deciding between the ipad 2 and the table S and went with the tablet S instead.

  • I believe the model that is in the market can only do WIFI. Apparently a faster cpu with 3G was planned to be released soon (so does the dealer tells me).

I saw the demo of it at Sony, the Throw function is very cool (if you have DLNA), The universal remote was quite cool too. However, I found the response a little jittery.

  • +2

When you say terrible build quality, you mean it just falls apart in your hands or because it is not made of metal? Mine hasn't fallen apart yet, is there something that I should know about the best Android tablet on the market?

OK, enough of the trolling by me.. The tablet is just cool for DLNA and ebook (Not as good as e-ink) reading just because it sits in your hand without strain while standing on a bus. Try doing that with a transformer.

Saying all this, The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 would probably the best tablet on the market for pure screen quality.

I wonder if Sony should have built the tablet with what they made that Netbook out of, Carbon Fibre.
