Samsung Odyssey G9 240hz 49” 1ms $1954.70 + $289 Shipping @ Newegg

710

Hi all,

This is my first post! Was looking at G9s and found this to be a very good price compared to Australian/local retailers.

Works out to be $1954 + $289 for shipping.

Not sure if it’s a solid deal as it does ship from America. I have bought from Newegg and I had no issues with damaged boxes or anything with a much smaller product.

    OP must be rich

Is this a TV or monitor?

    • +18

Monitor to watch baby while they sleep.

      • +3

        Well played, death Stranding

    • +1

      yes

  • +3

I assume this will have a US plug as well… will probably need to use an adaptor or buy an AU power lead.

    • True!

    • +1

Yup, and between that, and the likely lower price of upcoming AU promos, this is a skip.

Solid price though, and did predict this when the monitor first launched. Glad we're starting to see some competitive pricing in the AU market.

    • +8

Yeah no deal, needing a $5 plug on a $2300 monitor.

      • +1

There are tons of power cables lying around everywhere. Any company, most households.

    • -1

If you want a TV then it is……

    • +2

For pure value, yeah I agree… But in terms of functionality, there is no TV on the market (that I’m aware of) that runs 240hz with a 1ms input lag.

    • +6

why would someone buy a TV if they want a ultrawide monitor?

  • +2

did anyone use newegg for big purchases like this? how will they handle warranty? sending monitor back and forth between AU and US seems expensive

    • +2

ya that's a good question. I probably wait till the local here sells at a discount

    • +2

I wouldn't be making any plans based on the warranty being anything more than a piece of paper

    • +1

Looks like they do provide “LocalCover Warranty” in addition to Australian consumer law.

      • +1

Looks like they do provide “LocalCover Warranty” in addition to Australian consumer law.

What does that mean? They are an offshore company, they aren't bound by Australian law.

        • -1

It's a Samsung screen, Samsung will surely have to fix it during warranty.

    • +2

Becareful buying big ticket items from Newegg as the company is hard to deal with even within warranty period. Search Reddit for more stories.

      • hm, probably will hold off then - don't want any warranty issues especially considering how many of them G9 had in the past

        • +1

apparently, they went downhill since sold to an overseas company (hint: which we are having a trade war right now)

      • reddit is huge. Probably a subreddit name please if you have any? is it /r/ultrawidemasterrace?

  • +2

Expecting this in my stocking this Christmas after being good in such a bad year.

  • If anyone can price match this locally for pickup I’d buy it in a heartbeat

  • +1

May also incur an Import Tax at the border as the item is over ~AU$1000.

    • I thought it should be fine as Newegg includes GST at checkout 🤔

  • +5

People on www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace are going nuts over this monitor. I'm hanging for the AW3821DW

    • +1

Me too! Come on dell release it in Aus already!

      • I am actually choosing between G9 vs AW3821DW and waiting for a good deal on both. Both of these seem to be great monitors overall. Another really good option is LG CX 48 which has superior picture quality and is now available in AU but personally I am too worried about burn-in to buy it. Even if I don't get burn-in I will be thinking about it which is not what I want, so G9 and AW3821DW win for me

        • +2

The current rumor is the dell is out Friday in Australia and will prob be part of what Black Friday deal they will have going …

          • @bowtiehoon: I hope the rumour is also good for their U4919dw…been hold off for 1 since the price error last year.

        • Why compromise if you can afford the best. I’m about to drop the cash on the CX 48 for my desktop to replace 2 monitors and to drive my PS5. No regrets, just spectacular gaming and productivity experience for me from now on with the superior OLED. Thank you

  • +1

this is the best 49" ultrawide gaming monitor you can get currently

    • +2

sure it is, so long as you have unlimited funds.

      • The price is definitely not unlimited, rather around $2k

  • +1

With all the issues this monitor has had, I wouldn't be buying overseas stock on it even at a substantial discount. Not worth the stress. Good find though OP

    • +1

seems that they fixed a lot of these issues in the models starting from Aug manufactured dates but yeah still risky

  • +2

Got one of the launch models, lucky enough to have no issues. Havent been able to get 240hz going without flicker though.

    • If you've already updated your firmware as well as your monitor and GPU drivers, just speak with Samsung support, as there seems to be some voltage-related issues with some early batches that might warrant a panel replacement.

      • +1

True, the thought of disassembling and getting it back into the box is scary though. Got the latest monitor FW and GPU drivers but I'll try again.

        • I believe with a monitor that size and weight, they'll organise pickup from your door?

          • @jasswolf: Possibly. Oh well no need for that. I have given it another try now and it works. Apparently the hotfix for it was included with drivers a few weeks back.

            • @ruddiger7: They're required to under Australian law. You'll still have to pack it up though.

    • is it as good as they say? did you compare it vs any other relatively good monitor?

      • +1

It's better then having one monitor. Games look great, monitor is smooth, HDR is alright. Doesnt have the same pixel density as my old 4K monitor but its still great. Probably not worth the 2.8K rrp but if you can get it in the low 2s its worth it.

  • +1

Has anyone with this monitor set up Display Fusion for say, a 16:9 game in fullscreen window borderless and then 2x other 'panels' for chat or something?

  • I have an LG CX 48" and thinking of selling it for this at this price, just worried if I have issues having to post it back to the US…

    • +2

How's the cx 48 as a PC monitor?

      • +1

it has a great picture but even wall mounted I sit too close for my liking, I'll need to get a wider desk. Running it on 1050ti until the 14th of Dec when the 3080 arrives so I haven't been able to really enjoy it. Having a b9 55" and cx 65" I've never worried about burn-in but with the 48" as a monitor, it is all I think about to be honest. Not to mention the auto dimming which is extremely annoying up close.

        • Probably explains why you're thinking of selling, you definitely need some horsepower to run this screen. I can't imagine running this on a 1050Ti, hell, even my 1080Ti struggled to do it justice. Having a 3080 makes an astonishing difference and I don't think I could go back to a VA/IPS panel myself. I can understand it being too big for some people though, my eyeballs are almost exactly 1m away from the panel and wouldn't want to sit any closer.

    • +1

How have you found the 48 oled as a monitor? im seriously considering one when they come out here … i currently have a 1080p 34 ultrawide

      • +1

It’s already out. Ordered from Jbhifi getting delivered in 2 weeks. No regrets.

  • Seriously, I cannot buy more Black Friday monitor deals from NewEgg, my wife will fry me…

  • +1

Own one, great monitor and great deal but plagued with issues, will be a shit experience dealing with warranty.

  • +1

This monitor would go perfectly with my PC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa0jZnrQrIA ;)

  • +4

As someone who owns one, I'd honestly pay the extra few hundred to have a retailer to return it too considering all of the QC problems

  • I'm gunna need a bigger office.

  • +4

Tip: If you want to get free shipping and are looking to buy some other parts at the same time, if you buy $300 worth of GPU, CPU, RAM, you get free shipping. Doesn't take off GST tho.

    • Great tip thank you

  • As cool as this monitor is I don't think it's $1500 more monitor than the $500 xaomi.

    • +6

      2677 vs 3995.75cm² (+49%)
      144 vs 240hz (+67%)
      4 vs 1ms (4x)

      $500 * 1.5 * 1.67 * 2 = $2505

I'd say this is fair value.

  • +1

    Odyssey*

    • Thanks mate!

  • +1

Comes out to $2,351.95, I would try to barter a local place down for local warranty since early batches have had issues.

  • +1

Would 4 Xioami ultrawides taped together be as good as this?

    • +1

      Is it quality tape?

      • Flex tape.
Got enough left after I sawed a boat in half.

  • hmmm, the vertical resolution is only 1440.
would prefer a version running with a vertical of 2160 at 240 hz.

    eg. 7680 x 2160

    • +1

You will need Nvidia RTX 5080 videocard to support 2160 vertical/240Hz for 49” monitor, it will come out around 2024. I would love to have this resolution as well though, perhaps in the next couple of years we will get such a monitor

      • +2

it will come out around 2024

For supply to meet demand? 2026.

    • +1

The only ultra wide with 2160 vertical is the LG 34WK95U (5120x2160)…60Hz and suffers from terrible image retention

      • i have the Alienware AW38 and I was thinking of the LG 34WK95U for office purposes. What do you mean by image retention?

        • +1

          Have a look here https://hardforum.com/threads/lg-34wk95u.1969954/

People have complained about bright images leaving behind faint ghost images that don't fade out for hours…

Also, this monitor has horrible PWM flicker as it uses a PWM backlight for brightness adjustment.

          • @twister292: Damn son. What about the Xiaomi 34" and Alienware AW38?

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: No such reports on either the AW or the Mi. They're vastly different monitors though, they are good for their prices but shouldn't be compared. The Mi is a VA panel with much slower dark response times. The AW38 is IPS, has bigger vertical resolution, much wider gamut and much faster response times.

              • @twister292: Cheers. I have the alienware monitor. It takes a great deal of deskspace up. I was considering a cheaper monitor for office work. Dunno

                • @[Deactivated]: The Mi is a perfectly good monitor for office work. The response times are only really relevant to gaming.

                  • +1

@twister292: I think I'll grab it. Just hard to find any at $450

      • new contender:
        https://youtu.be/8Fxq3wmbvKg

        also 5120 x 2160

        • 60Hz, no VRR and USD 2100. Will be closer to $3000 here I think.

          • -1

            @twister292: yep and crap PPI

            • @DiSTURBED-oNE: Ummm 5120x2160 at 40 inches diagonal is 139ppi, which is about the same as a UHD 4K 32" screen.

What is an acceptable ppi to you? 4K at 27" is 163ppi, which is too small at 100% scaling. I use mine at 125% scaling so it ends up being about 130ish. Most people end up using 4k 27" screens at 150% scaling which is about 110ppi (same as 1440p 27").

              • @twister292: I am used to using Apples "Retina" displays which range from 218 - 227 PPI on MacBooks and iMacs.
When I move to more traditional displays I notice, especially at 2K, less so at 4K but I still notice.

So now any 3rd party monitor I buy needs to be at least 200.

                • +1

@DiSTURBED-oNE: You should look at importing the Dell UP3218K then. 32 inches 8K. 330ppi, though you'll likely end up using it at 250% scaling. And it won't work with laptops because it needs 2 dp inputs

                  • @twister292: I have been considering it and it will work using an eGPU with my MBP, however, I am waiting for an ultra-wide with a minimum of 200 PPI.
I've got an ultra-wide at work and with my workflow it works better for me.

  • -1

The PPI is too low on this, it wont look that impressive. Needed to atleast jam in the 2160 pixel height, even then it's not gonna be that impressive. Yeh it will need more horsepower but thats why it would be best to have some custom resolution on 16:9 in the middle for some games and others or desktop mode make use of the wide real estate.

Also ultra wides are more of a gimmick, take it from someone who was an early adopter, you end up missing the height and not needing the peripheral which isn't make to be peripheral.

    • The PPI on this monitor is exactly the same as a 27" 2560x1440 display, which is pretty good in most people's books. I actually don't think 2160p makes sense with this screen height because you have to set Windows scaling a bit weirdly for everything to work properly.

I don't agree at all about the ultrawide being a gimmick. I have 21:9 and love it.

    • +1

Mate, it's just two 27 inch 1440p monitors side by side and its great for coding.

      • +2

Yup, but bezel in centre of view is a nice distraction.

    • ultra wides are more of a gimmick

Er no, you actually see more in driving games where it matters compared to 16:9.

  • +3

Buying a monitor that has become notorious for terrible QC issues from an overseas retailer seems like a bad idea. Hopefully we'll see price drops from local retailers soon.

  • +1

    Just purchased 2, thanks OP!

  • +1

got the previous generation from umart today for $1900
even with a 2080ti i'm not going to be getting any value out of 240hz
i'll never buy a monitor from an online store again (after some issues earlier this year)

  • rich people

  • +1

Hanging for the lag 49" for my minalistic setup.

Wish they'd include a monitor arm instead of a monitor stand with these monitors.

  • Does anyone know if this is on the EPP?

    • $2659

      • Thanks! I ended up getting the crg9 instead $1600
