Raw Prawns Tail On or Off

Which is better?, On or Off?

    • +2

Off you do not pay for the weight of something you do not eat.

      • +1

Why don't they just breed them without tails then?

        • Maybe because they can't.

      • +13

        Thats a little shellfish then…

        • +1

Yeah - don't come the raw prawn with us, mate.

          I'll clam up now.

    • Cooking them crispy enough to eat the tails as well is even more delicious. They need enough crunch so the shell breaks up nicely like a potato crisp in your mouth. If they're not cooked enough, the shell will be chewy.

    • Beware that I recall picking these up and putting them back because they're made in Vietnam.

Not as bad as China imo but worth noting.

  • Is head on?

    • +1

      No heads.

  • Are these prawns good for making garlic prawns?

    • +1

They're okay… Nothing beats fresh prawns though, but these are $19/kg.

      • +2

        Nothing beats fresh prawns

You mean the one you can buy from seafood store? If yes, that one also came frozen if you don't know.

        • Not always. If the antennae are intact, they have not been frozen.

        • Yea totally agree. Fresh fish is a rare sight to behold in Melbourne. (especially in supermarkets)

  • +3

I bought the prawns before. They are really tiny unfortunately but for the price I guess it's wat you pay for

  • Tail on. Tail off. Daniel Son.

  • Fresh prawns are so such more flavorful and this is the only time of year you can typically get them in the supermarket. And before someone responds the cooked prawns in the deli are typically cooked then frozen. While at Christmas you can get cooked and fresh.

    • +4

Sure, truly fresh ones taste far better than any frozen prawn. But they have to come a long way to be trucked to the city, then bought at the fish market by the retailer, trucked to the store and then wait to be sold. They can easily be a week old by the time they're eaten.

From a safety (though not taste) POV frozen is much safer than "fresh" commercial seafood, Vietnam or not. If you've ever eaten a bad prawn you will know this is not a trivial consideration.

      • That is certainly a reasonable consideration.

    boycottcoles

Hardworking Smeaton Grange warehouse workers have been put on the street before Christmas. fighting for better conditions. So rather than negotiating, Cole’s have closed the warehouse and locked out the workers.

    • +2

I think you left out some of the facts…

    • The irony… you want half price prawns while championing the plight of the workers that pack and process those prawns. I’d imagine labour costs make up the majority of what it costs to put a prawn on your plate, more so for the prawn without a tail.

      How about you say…

      “boycottightases

Lazy bargain hunters are pushing hardworking Smeaton Grange warehouse workers out on the street before Christmas. They are fighting for better conditions, but rather than paying a fair price for a prawn these tight arses insist on getting them for half price forcing the retailers to take action they probably don’t want to.”

Smeaton Grange is the highest-paid site in the Coles network currently and staff are pushing for a 5.5 per cent pay increase.

Coles has offered 3.5 per cent and has offered a maximum of 80 weeks' pay for involuntary redundancies resulting from the expected closure of the site in 2023.

"I am sorry for so many team members at Smeaton who have been brainwashed into thinking the offer is not a good offer, and into thinking that we don't value them," Mr Swindells said.

"The demands are just not justifiable. Our original offer is still on the table."

However, workers at Smeaton have rejected this offer and have demanded redundancy payments up to the equivalent of two years' pay.

Mr Toner said the strike would continue.

"The workers are prepared to stick it out for as long as it takes to get what they deserve, we're just waiting for Coles to call us to talk about how they can improve their offer," he said.

Anyone else sitting on a 0% year on year pay-rise?
