Can you explain why? Genuinely interested to know.

      • -3

Personal opinion. It shows the person has not used cloud/trialed it out enough to know that the certs/exams do not prove knowledge.
AWS knowledge is just the implementation part of general cloud/software architecture. It shows the person thinks that learning the vendor's marketing is a good way to spend their time and decide how to use infrastructure. I can't trust you to objectively architect things with pros and cons and consider other vendors if you've gone so far as taken an exam to learn their marketing.

        • +2

All what you're saying proves for me is that you seem to be an individual who has been working or knowing mostly about on-premises and new to cloud concepts. While I agree that when you learn about a vendor specific cert, you mostly get to know their system and products, as an architect, you have to be unbiased and put all the options and alternatives in a proposal.

        • I think that you are mistaken. While I agree that certification without an experience is frowned upon, I would rather hire a person who has experience AND a certification.
AWS is a very sought after certification, esp. if you continue to pursue specialisations. Depending on your experience, it can get you a good job.
Have a nice day. (BTW, I did not neg you, but please reconsider your statement.)

The AWS certs have a lot more street cred than many other popular IT certifications. Wouldn't be surprised if they are considered "must have" for many cloud architect or devops-oriented roles.

      • +4

AWS and Azure certs are becoming very popular and must have. Not sure what this guys is on about. I always suggest CCNA then choose either cloud platform and pick a path. They might just be an overview, but its a good foundation and to start getting your hands dirty.

        • Popular with who? Sys admins? or people who write software?

          • +1

@fafsdfadfabcfbc: Take your pick. Depends on which path. There's probably more than a dozen.

      • +1

Yeah they're sometimes required for jobs at AWS partner consulting firms, as they have "certified employee" quotas to meet.

        • Correctly. AWS consulting firms require a minimum number of associate certifications and professional certifications to maintain their Premier Partner status.

I'm in a central DevOps team. We're unlikely to hire someone we don't know who doesn't have certs except for a very junior role and even there we're finding people who have them now.

That said, there are people who we have interviewed who have the certs and had no clue.

I've never seen a certificate for coding that is worth a damn. That's harder to evaluate and multiple choice certainly won't help with that.

But to know what IAM roles, users, policies and whatnot are and to be aware of what container services there are on a platform, well, a cert will help with that.

You would make me LESS likely to work or be hired by you for the sole reason I got a bunch of IT certifications.
edit: sorry I failed to reply to the first guy…

    • -2

Well if you got these certs you could not mention it, that works. I don't mention irrelevant qualifications when I apply for jobs.

      • +3

I agree with your opinion of these certs do not demonstrate proven knowledge, not sure why you would less likely work with someone though? The interview process should demonstrate your knowledge.

What certs do help with is working within consulting roles or in large organisations to build confidence for clients and other departments. It will also stop negative conversations from others of your capability.

These certs are to be combined with experience can further your career and I wouldn't regard them so poorly.

Have been a hiring manager and currently consulting if you're thinking of doing it, go for it!

        • I'm a consultant in a AWS consulting company and I regularly conduct the tech interview with potential candidates.
          I agree with your comments.

In addition, AWS partners will require their employees to hold a minimum number of certifications to maintain their tier in the partner program.
I'm constantly being asked by my boss to keep obtaining/renewing my certifications.

Definitely get a degree instead of a cert. Definitely not a waste of time…

      • +2

Just so people know, this is sarcasm

  • Which AWS cert is good for starters?

    • +4

      AWS Cloud Practitioner

      • Thanks I will look into that

    Is this actually a bargain?

What's the normal price for this course? Most courses on udemy are heavily discounted with a timer tricking you into thinking is just for a limited time.

    • Usually, Udemy runs sitewide discount from around A$14.99 - A$20 or something time to time & varies from course to course (except black friday/Cyber Monday where many courses were from A10.99).
These codes will give lowest possible discount A$10.99

  • I heard that Solutions Architect salary starts from $200k?

    • +2

      120k

    • +3

200k and above is definitely achievable. However it most certainly isn't a starting point. There would be outliers, but generally most would be within the range of 120-280k. Added to that, solutions architect roles are generally going to be filled by people who've had extensive IT carers and have good communications skills.

      • Contract rates will get you over 200k. However as above, that's for a very experienced IT professionals. It's also good to get some base level skills that don't change. e.g. Base Security knowledge, or networks, or system admin. Certificates like this are valid only until the cloud technology/product changes, which is very quick, so you need to stay updated all the time with new developments and changes.

    • You also need more than just a Solutions Architect Associate certification to be a Solutions Architect.

      • well how about a hint?

        • The Solutions Architect Associate is just the "entry level" cert (I'm not counting Cloud Practicioner).
If you want to be a Solutions Architect, you will need the Professional certification - that way you can conduct Well Architected Review of a system.
You will also need plenty of Platform Engineering experience to back up your certifications.

My comment is to prevent people thinking they can buy this uDemy course, sit the exam and earn $120k plus upon obtaining the certification.

  • +2

Note this is just for the Udemy course. If you want the certification, you also got to buy and sit the exam and the costs of that is a lot more than these courses.
