      at least the camera from JB is not directly from hong kong, you are buying it through a local supplier…

      that bit of extra money I spend buying it at JB is worth it to me… more peace of mind

        the warranty for jb hifi's direct import will not go through the physical shops but to the main office. They have exactly the same warranties and DWI is reliable and we know where the stock is coming from unlike Jb hifi's stock which could be straight out of a sweat shop

    No difference. Kiss is the Japanese version, so when you get it delivered the manual will be in Japanese and so will the camera settings. You can reset the camera language to English and download the manual off the net.

        I've got a Kiss X4. They are identical to the 550D. Even the firmware updates are the same. The only difference is the logo on the camera, and the EXIF data for all your photos will say Kiss X4 instead of 550D. (Kiss X5 / 600D same deal)

        No. Canon just has a silly policy of having different brand names for the US, Japan and the rest of the world. The Kiss X5, the 600D and the Rebel T3i are all literally the same hardware with a different badge and different language settings. Same goes for the compacts, e.g. an Ixus 220 HS, an IXY 410F and a Digital ELPH 300 HS are all the same hardware with different names screenprinted on them for different markets.

      My Kiss X4 from ShoppingSquare earlier in the year had the language set to English already (and I think the date was even set properly, although don't quote me on that).

      The manual was not in English but a burned CD with a printed label (!) was included with a PDF of the English language manual.

        Nikon D5100 is a closer match, but superior in many ways.
        canon 550d is an old model now.

        ahh yes but the d5100 costs about $200 more than the 550D and is definitely superior.
        Although the d5100 is still superior the direct competitor would be the 600D since the 550D is more than a year old.

        If you can stretch the budget the d5100 is the best in it's class but for the budget conscious and CHDK lovers 550D is a more cheaper option

        I have the 550D/X4 and the only difference to the 600D is a flip out screen. To me the 550D is great value and delivered for $590 is a decent price. I don't think a flip out screen is worth another $100.
