Pool Chlorinator Options

Hey all,

Have recently bought a house and pool seemed to be going ok but water was a bit cloudy. I work away so just thought get the pool guy in to get it sorted over summer then I'll take it back on in winter.

His finding is the astral chlorinator is not working properly, therefore producing zero chlorine. Cell is fairly new though.

"I have had your chlorinator accessed instore and it appears to have an issue with the main PC board. Due to the high cost of replacement parts I would recommend replacement.
Options for replacement chlorinator below.
Pool Pro RP30 - $1125 + $105 Installation (2-year warranty on power supply, 5-year pro rata on cell)
Or
Autochlor RP25QT - $1448.25 + $105 Installation (4-year warranty)
Pool is currently running without a chlorinator and is still cloudy, it may require additional chemicals to clear."

I've done some hunting and think he is a little steep on pricing. I'm going to get a comparable quote tomorrow on same units to see where were at but I've also come across the K Chlor Digital which looks like the deal in this video.

Has anyone had any experience with any of these or similar?

What is involved in installation? Should I get pool guy to do or can I just remove old cell housing and put new one on with plumbers glue/tape?

Thanks.

Also consider switching to Magna Pool magnesium rather than salt generated clorine. The magnesium is much softer on the skin and doesn't smell

Pools.. YMMV - but I found ours was a pure money pit…
Everytime took a sample in for testing would get bent over.

Got rid of it and put in 9mtr x 6mtr shed :)

    Again YMMV.

    • I must be lucky as all I do is throw in a few bags of MagnaSalt a year and that is basically it.
Take a water sample to PoolWorx every couple of months and walk out with a clean bill of health.

  • Maybe you can get a mainboard for your Astral chlorinator online and put it in yourself. For my EQ35 a board is $400. Astral charges $800 supply & fit.

    • Yea I looked at that. I think I'd rather spend $1000 on something new than half of that not knowing how old the unit actually is and possibly having further issues.

  • Have you shopped around for different prices? I have not used them personally, but if you are in Sydney I have heard good things about these guys (i.e. better prices):

    • I'm going to in the morning. Just got the quote friday afternoon. A lot of places don't advertise prices online due to arrangements I guess.

  • I just replaced my astral chlorinator cell. It was $600. However it was the cell bit that was dead not the main board bit. Easy diy. It was 6 years old.

The Astral stuff generally they are pretty good on warranty so check that first. I got a whole new cartridge filter system worth $2.5k under warranty.

  • Ditch chlorine and install a naked system. No chemicals to deal with other than adjusting PH every once in a while. Combo it with a cartridge filter and job done. Just like swimming on fresh water. I spend next to no time maintaining our pool and the water is always clean and clear.

    • By naked, do you mean bionizer or something else?

  • Hi @dmbminaret do you end up buying the kchlor? I am interested in it?
Anyone has any experiences with it? Thanks

    • I got the bionizer. It's actually really good. Easy to maintain. I work away and only home every second weekend and all I need to do is add some acid over summer and a dash of chlorine for sanitation if it's been used.

I've actually automated it with a couple of peristaltic pumps on a wifi routine. Acid injects into return pipe for one minute every second day and chlorine every other day.

      • could you please let me know how much you paid for the bionizer, and if it's been going well since you put it in?
could you also specify your pool size?

        thanks!

        • I think it was around 1000 bucks but that was a few years ago. It was a bit more than we wanted to spend but the pool did need some TLC. I got all the sand out of the filter and replaced with glass. The plus side is you don't need to run the filter for as many hours as a chlorinator and less chemicals needed.

I battled with it for a season or two having it set to 50k litres but the day I changed settings to 60k, it became almost maintenance free. I use a couple of wifi relays to dose one minute of chlorine per day and 40 seconds of acid every second day. Now all I need to do is collect leaves.

I'm starting a side hustle selling the pumps and tubing if you're interested.
