Suffice to say that $297 does not buy 650 real watts (RMS) but probably 650 bullshit watts- PMPO or some drivel measure like that.

    • +1

Not so sure. Pioneer isn't all that bad, I think. The cheap ones used not to support trueHD and DTS-HD, but this one does. Sounds alright to me.

    • Its a genuine figure, sure its taken at the best case scenario (1khz @8 ohms)

    • +2

Regardless or that, they combine wattage from each output, so even if they say 650watts RMS, you don't get that sort of power. Also, i doubt in a home cinema you'll ever use that sort of power, 20 watts per channel is heaps in reality, the only thing you want is overhead to not go into clipping and wreck your tweeters.

    • +1

to clarify for people, nearly all manufacturers give these bogus wattages. the back of the unit says 415W. If its input power is 415W, even with a very generous efficiency of 80%, real output wouldn't exceed 332W, or 66W per channel. in reality, i bet its a fair bit less than that, but that doesn't mean it's not enough. the difference between 60W and 120W is only 3db. it's an entry level unit, but will suit a lot of people.

Bought VX520 years ago, love it with that price even with DTSHD and can bitstream from my HTPC.

  • +6

For an extra $46 you get this one (Pioneer HTP200) with speakers & subwoofer, but with the older VSX-520
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/home-theatre/pioneer/600-watt-5-1-c…

    • It's HTP071, not HTP200. It therefore only has VSX-321, NOT VSX-520!!

  • Looking at this this morning, nice post

  • I bought that 55 dollars logitech speakers from Bing Lee !!

    Nice find bro !

  • +1

    amazon.com is $197
    http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-VSX-521-K-Theater-Receiver-Glo…
    wonder if its the same.

    • +5

yes its the same, but most stuff sold on amazon is 110volts for the US market, so the saving after having to buy a step-down transformer+shipping would be almost negated.

    • The reviews on amazon aren't that good for this amp.

      • Yeah, just noticed. How weird. It's got much worse reviews than the 520 it replaced, wonder if it's worth trying to get hold of one of those instead..

  • This one supposely has apple AirPlay where the 520 doesn't so good price

    • +2

From what i can tell, Airplay is only supported from the VSX-921 and up?

  • looks good, not sure if I should get one with 7.1 channels though…do many blurays have 7.1 channel sounds???

Also it's looks a bit too big to fit the existing TV cabinet… :(

    • +9

Better not buy anything electronic then I guess, cause in 5 years time, there'll be some new technology!

      • +5

The way things are going in 5 years time even electricity will be obsolete ;)

        • +1

Or too expensive for normal folk to use!

    • +1

      Yup, thats technology.
It would be better if you buy stuff with features you actually need instead of the latest gimmick.
PS: I try but can't help it sometimes.

  • +9

wow, razmoo bought something 10 yrs ago and its outdated - who would have thought !

    • imagine if he bought an iPhone

    • +2

      you guys are too serious

      • +1

        Ozbargain is serious business. Seriously!

  • +2

Here's a large picture of the back for anyone interested. http://www.productwiki.com/upload/images/pioneer_vsx_521_k_1…

This is pretty tempting. It'd be perfect if it had 2 more HDMI inputs.

    • +1

It would be better if it had proper binding posts for the centre and rear speakers.

  • +1

Any recommendations on speaker to pair up with this unit? Or if you needed speakers would the general recommendation be to go with the kit post by FarQ?

  • -5

So this the 110w x 5 channels receiver with a us msrp of 250 dollars us and it doesn't have airplay, and people are excited because of what exactly?

What am i missing - please correct me jbhi people because I am in a good mood today - bananas were cheap for the first time in over a year and the level of librium in the water has increased.

    • +1

AMP with HD audio and bitstream for that price it is good.

  • .

  • ARC or not?

  • How does that compare to the Kenwood at WOW with active sub & spks for $399? I got it from JB with better front spks for $588. Vx6000 from memory http://mobile.jbhifi.com.au/home-theatre/kenwood/780-watt-5-…

  • -5

DOn;t buy and simplay save money - as this is something I don;t really need….and I wonder if I buy - do I really use it??

    • If you don't need it go somewhere else, don't waste your time posting here.

  • do they make receivers with multiple hdmi out

  • -1

    Not a bargain

  • I'm waiting for that sony amp for around the same price with 7.1 ch at hardly normal..

  • +1

"This is my first post so please be nice to me…:)"

Totally redundant. If it's a good bargain then you don't have to worry about people being 'nice'.

    • -2

True, but it also lets them get their first neg quicker.
No bargain to be seen here.

    • +1

Strange cause OP has been a member since 19 Nov 2009….. I wouldve thought OP wouldve have come across enough 'first post pls be nice' post and know how people often react. Well at least I have.

  • Used to have a Pioneer 519 but upgraded to the Onkyo NR609 and never look back.

I highly recommend everyone to do the same :)

    • i was drooling for Onkyo NR609 too…too bad cant find a good deal… how much did u paid and where? It has DLNA and an android app to remote control right?

      • Bought it from overseas (i.e South East Asian country which is also 240V) so the price will be irrelevant. However AUS price is really ridiculous comparing with what i paid for.

You can download an iphone apps to remote control the receiver. Confirmed that the apps can be used by ipad as well.

        Not sure about DLNA though.

  • $2 more for those that live next to a Wow Store:
    http://www.1wow.com.au/pioneer-5-1ch-3d-ready-av-receiver-vs…

    • It would be nice to have another few WOW stores in Vic, there is one in Shepparton, but you pretty much drive past JB hifi to get to it.

  • Pioneer is ok. does the job. not bad looking unit.

  • WOW will beat JB's $297 by 10%, bringing this unit down to $267.30.
    Now, that's a good deal!
I'm VERY tempted. There's a WOW store not far away.

    • +1

Can you send me a link to WoWs price match conditions? Didn't know they beat prices by 10% and can't find any info.

  • +1

    Hi, fruxo,
My comment above may be a little outdated.
The 10% better price policy was in place last year when I bought my new plasma from WOW.
However, like you, I can't find any reference to it on their website now. I phoned the Annerly (Brisbane) Store this morning & asked about beating JB's $297 for the VSX-521. The Salesman said they would, but baulked when I mentioned 10%. He didn't seem to know anything about beating opposition prices by 10%.
I'm off to another store tomorrow,(Kedron) where I got 10% off an already EXTREMELY low price on my plasma last year.
If I have any luck, I'll let you know.
Maybe they've quietly dropped that policy -(because of buyers like me).
Incidentaly, I've noticed that HN have dropped their "beat the oposition by 5% " policy also. They only undertake to beat the "competitor's advertised price " now. I guess that could be interpreted to mean they'll beat ONLY "advertised" prices, NOT haggled down prices.

    • Ah ok. Please do let me know how it goes though, was gonna buy it in the next couple of days from jb. My closest store is the Kedron one too.

  • Hi again fruxo,
I've been out of action for a while - illness. Bad news on pricing I'm afraid, or at least from The Annerly Store (didn't get to Kedron yet). Went into Annerly Store a day or two after phoning them. Again, the Salesman there claimed to not know anything about beating opposition prices by 10%. I might have been unlucky enough to get the same guy from my phone call.
If you live near Kedron, try it on, & let us know how you go.
I'd get one if they'll come down somewhere near $270.

    • So your justification for the neg is that you thought you could have it price beaten, but you tried and failed to get that.

Maybe time to revote that neg hey?

  • Great price for amp not sure why people woulxd neg this?

  • Sincere apologies to all, especially 1kellyly. I accidentally voted neg , and, to my great embarrassment, can't figure out how to change it to positive. Can anybody help?

I'm particularly ashamed of my inability to cancel the neg vote because, as a result of this post, I got one of these amps at Dick Smith this morning for a mere $274 - by quoting the on-line promotion code (discount) price at Dick Smith, Indooroopilly. (They're listed on-line @ $299 with free delivery. Applying the promotion code brings it down to $274.)

So, it appears that some Dick Smith stores WILL price match the on-line promotion code price, but others won't. Might just be luck with the store you visit.

Nevertheless, can someone please tell me how to change my stupid neg vote? I'm wrapped in my new Amp - especially @ $274! Thanks for the heads-up, 1kellyly.

    • hi john, could you kindly share the DSE promo code? considering to get one from Dick Smith.

  • Sorry about late reply, taroko - been away. I used "K24XDH863L" from an earlier Dick Smith tv listing on OzBargain and it worked on the Pioneer Receiver!
However, have you considered the Yamaha HTR-3064 at JB Hi-Fi for only $249? Some stores still have stock. It has 4 Digital Audio inputs c/f Pioneer's 3, and has 2 years warranty c/f Pioneer's 1yr. Rest of specs look similar to me.
It's easier to find on web searches as the re-badged Yamaha RX-V371
