I Came Home, and My Cat Took a s**T on My Laptop 🀬

Lucky I kept the plastic cover, and 80% was easily removed.
I cleaned the lower keyboard around the space bar, and this morning I've turned it on it works other than the keyboard doesn't work at all.

Is this a simple reboot issue? Otherwise should I back up my HD via external drive before rebooting?

If reboot, and keyword doesn't work I won't be able to enter my password.

Merry Christmas πŸ€”πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜¬

Naughty πŸˆβ€β¬› , maybe jealous you pay more attention to laptop…

    😱

Do you have a USB keyboard to plug in as a workaround.?

    • USB is working(mouse works fine), if I had a spare keyboard I doubt it'd be USB tho hahaha
Are they expensive? Definitely a good work around if it's screwed! Thank you for the idea.

I could probably ask some friends and see if anyone has one.

        • My mate is dropping one off, but if it comes to it I'll buy this til I can work it out or buy a new laptop.

It's an old Ultrabook, Samsung but it still does the job well for what I need so annoying. It was 2k new, probably lucky to be worth $300 now.

          Thanks for the link!

          • -1

@[Deactivated]: Just use a sub keyboard. If that isn't what you want prepare to pay for a new in (You can replace them) and someone to fit it. If you can't use logic to think "I could plug a usb keyboard in" you shouldn't be trying to fit the keyboard. I'm sorry if it offends but it's the truth, if you have that little pc acumen pay someone. I don't work on my own car because I don't know how, no shame.

      • +8

Alternatively on Windows 10 (I believe windows 7 & 8 as well but I don't have them installed to verify) you can goto the the bottom right and click the ease of access which can bring up the on screen keyboard.

  • Was your cats litter clean when it happened?

    • Yes! 2 litters in the house! 1 cat uses 1, the other never gets used

Normally I let them out to poo, but I was out all day! They've taken a dump on the floor before, or carpet! Just not on my laptop! Hahaha

      Fml

      • +11

I think your cat was trying to tell you something and wanted to be sure you didn't miss the message. Cats are real assholes like that. You really let them out like a dog though to poop?

  • +15

Cat needs more attention and cuddles.

Sorry to hear they communicated this so directly and unpleasantly 😬

    • +1

You'd know lol.The username checks out!

  • +1

If a reboot doesn't fix the issue, what else could I do to work out why it's not working?

I don't wanna take apart the laptop, and it's not worth fixing as it's 8+ years old and a tech would cost more than it's worth.

I'll back up to 60gb SSD, and wait for a deal at some stage.

    Hopefully reboot works lol
I'm happy it at least runs and I can back up files, or else I would be crying!

    • +2

Check youtube for your model, there might be disassembly and repair videos. You can learn how to DIY and maybe even upgrade the hard disk to an ssd with higher capacity. If you do buy a new one, always close the lid when leaving home. Had a parrot.

    • +4

Most DIY repairs are sketchy at best. I've replaced a screen on an old laptop for it to die 6 months later, a lot of fuss to keep an old thing going, unless you will find some kind of satisfaction in spending several hours replacing a keyboard, don't bother. Just shit on the cat while it sleeps and call it even..

    • +2

Sorry, I'm a bit late to the sharty. But a reboot isn't going to clean the crap out of the keyboard. Take it to a laptop repairer and be upfront about the issue as they may not want to handle it.

    • Really? A reboot usually fixes my cat…

  • +15

    Steam clean it for $100.

    • How's that gonna help?

      • +8

It will help the local business earn a hundred…

  • +9

Cats are funny but also one the shittiest pet.

    • +2

That will teach the OP not to put the lid down πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  • +3

You shouldn't have turned it on until you knew the keyboard was dry, otherwise you might have shorted it. Usually putting it in a bag of rice beforehand might help, but you have sadly already turned it on…

I guess you could still try the rice trick, but you might not get the same result.

  • +9

It's telling you it's neglected. But it's still better than dealing with a neglected gf/wife.

    • +15

Why… has your ex taken a shit in your laptop before?

      • That's a strong for another forum.

    • +1

      Jack? Captain, is that you?

  • +35

It was probably because you got a new mouse…

  • +2

Keyboards are surprisingly resiliant but might not work if still contaminated with cat exrement. If you are confident with fiddly work you can take the laptop apart, thoroughly clean it in fresh water and leave it to dry completely before re-installing it. There are plenty of YouTube videos that can guide you in the disassembly of a laptop, so a bit of DIY can save you a whole lot of money. It's unlikely to be worth paying a professional to do it, because there'll be a few hours of work / $$ that's best put to a new laptop.

Alternatively a new keyboard, either wired USB or Bluetooth / Wireless might be all you need if you don't need the laptop to be portable. There's plenty of options on eBay or Amazon for those.

    • Alternatively a new keyboard, either wired USB or Bluetooth / Wireless might be all you need if you don't need the laptop to be portable.

Yeah, if OP's only problem is entering the password, then this method will work fine.

I always use an external USB connected keyboard to my laptops. You can easily find really cheap ones at places like Officeworks.

    • I don't really wanna take apart an Ultrabook.

      • I have taken apart a Samsung Ultrabook to replace the keyboard. Reach out if you need a hand. I'm in Adelaide.

      • Reboot (reformat) is not going to change the problematic hardware.

  • +1

Does your cat have diarrhoea? My cat's poops are solid so it wouldn't have gotten in the circuitry to cause an issue.
Perhaps it is unwell and couldn't hold it in.
Sounds like you need to open the laptop to try to find an issue. A hardware and not a software problem.
Backup and buy a new laptop. Even if it is fixed, hard to get the idea out of typing on poop.

    • +1

My cat's poops are solid so it wouldn't have gotten in the circuitry to cause an issue.

I'd like to see that backed up with proof ;)

      • +1

He doesn't like people watching him go.

    • It looked half half, no idea when he did it.

    • not to mention if some got caught in a crevice somewhere imagine the smell once the laptop wamed up a bit

  • Often laptop keyboards are a discrete replaceable part so do some Google and look on ebay to see if you can DIY.

Note of caution. Some ultrabooks are built like machine guns so disassembly requires removal of many small screws, lifting out the components etc etc.

    • That's why I wanna avoid.

  • +3

    MS Paint?

  • The Cat was obviously using Windows. Trying to back up?

  • pic? or ms paint diagram please

  • +1

I can back up, it works. Just keyboard doesn't, however I tried again and noticed some of it works. I'm gonna let it keep drying, and maybe tomorrow it'll sort itself out.

It's improved, very odd tho. Maybe some poo, or the soap/foam I used which I thought I dried well is sitting under a key. Maybe it's during slowly.

  • +7

    Time to upgrade the cat.

  • +1

    Did you reboot the cat?

    • +2

I would try booting properly a few times, then reboot.

      • I want to upvote this but cant translate if its humour through text.

  • Had similar problems with my cat til i got her desexed

  • -1

I blame YouTube and all the cat porn on there.

  • Maybe the cat thought your computer was crap.

    Try a different brand maybe?

  • Sounds frustrated. Is the animal allowed to venture out side or kept locked up in a tiny confined space? Do you have a cat litter box? Do you have other stimulating toys, balls, cat scratcher, and the like?

  • Keyboard can usually be removed (popped out) . Try giving the keyboard a bath (agitated) in metholated spirits, let dry out and reconnect

  • +3

    Troll post?

  • +5

    What a cat-astrophe!

  • +1

Sell the cat and then use the money to buy a new laptop

    • +2

I think you overestimate how much people will pay for a used cat.

  • +2

My cat pissed in my puzzle box a couple years ago. Turns out she had an infected tooth. They tend to go to the toilet in places that get your attention ie carpet, bed etc when they don't feel well. (Even though their behaviour may otherwise seem pretty normal). Anyway maybe he is just grumpy :D, but just a thought.

  • +1

Cool story, little bit difficult to diagnose the damage to the electronics from your story though. "Is it a reboot issue"?… Sounds like you've rebooted already.

Regarding your question about the cost of a usb keyboard; Presume you have another device as you were able to post on here. Are you aware of officeworks, ebay, Amazon? You can use your other device to look at the prices on those sites.

  • lmao!

  • +1

Any picture or MS diagram OP? Hard to imagine without one

  • +1

It's "liquid" damage. First step would have been not to power on. You can now lift out the keys, clean and click them back on. Or disassemble and clean if it does not fix: iFixit has detailed guides. Find how long it takes to get to the keyboard. Practice the disassembly beforehand and keep screws together. Contact cleaner spray or 99% isopropyl is around $10. Use it to remove the "material" + carefully clean connectors. Wait till the cleaner evaporates each time. Might as well clean fans + obvious dust while you are there. Should also ground yourself or touch metal every so often to discharge any static.

I Came Home, and My Cat Took a s**T on My Laptop

I think you need to change the topic to:

I had a cat until it took a sh*t on my laptop.

  • -1

Is your laptop Windows by any chance? Perhaps the kitty trying to send you a msg.

  • It turned your laptop into a craptop!

  • +3

Or maybe he logged on to your Laptop

  • +3

You've got to even the score, take a poo on their favourite toy.

  • Keep your eyes out for a deal on crab pots.

  • +1

You really need to take a shit in your cat's food bowl. Level things out…

  • should be solid, does it have the runs? See a vet and feed better!

  • 80% by mass or by volume?

  • My cats breath smells like cat food.

  • Your cat dealt with it's competition effectively

  • +1

Oh poor kitty, thank goodness for the plastic cover. Easy enough to pickup a usb keyboard. We had birds fly in, one panicked and left an enormous deposit on the 2020 desk calendar, just like I imagine many people would like to do to 2020. Thank goodness it was 2020 and not 2021, lol.

    • A Nostradamus bird. Has it made a prediction for 2021 yet?

  • Before you do anything about your laptop, first spend 3 to 4 days giving your cat all the attention. Watch movies with him/her, pet them, take them for a walk? Cats rarely go out of their routine unless something is wrong. Is there an attention problem?

I guess it's time to buy a new laptop?

  • +3

At least cats don't smell so there is no need to steam clean the laptop.

  • Reboot = turn it off and on again

Sounds like your talking about reformatting it. No this will not fix crap in a keyboard

  • -1

Send it to Rossman in NYC. Louis has a few cats that will sniff it out and provide a free repair quote.

  • Update.

I rebooted the Ultrabook and the keyboard still only partly works.
Certain numbers and keys work, and others don't.

As it's a Samsung Ultrabook, and extremely thin it looks like it would be very difficult to take apart. When I bought this Ultrabook, at the time it was the world's thinnest Ultrabook.

Does anyone have any other recommendations, or steps I can check?

Otherwise in the near future I will Google steps to consider taking it apart, or I would just use it with a USB keyboard till I'm ready to purchase another laptop.

As mentioned, I doubt this Ultrabook is worth more than $300 these days so it's not worth me paying someone to take it apart as the Ultrabook works completely fine and I can backup the current SSD hard drive.

I appreciate all the recommendations, and feedback and the laughs which I expected. πŸ‘πŸ˜€

  • I remember I had a gaming pc I was always tinkering with for cooling inside so always had the side panel off. Anyway one day I came home to my share house and one of the other people living with me had just got a new kitten and it decided to mark its territory by psing in my case. It was super syrupy in texture I thought a possum or something had come into the house and did it. The smell, oh the smell. Not sure I ever got rid of it.

  • Thank you… you just gave me the perfect justification to buy a new laptop instead of a used one. 😁

    • +1

yeah very similar reasons why i’d almost never buy used electronics…

  • +2

Time to burn the laptop mate.

    • Probably.

It still works fine tho, such a bummer. I've watched videos in replacing the keyboard and basically you have to take the whole Ultrabook apart.

      The parts alone are $40-60+Shipping.

I'll just use it with a USB keyboard until I work out what upgrade I want, and when a sale is on.
