You may find that Amex cards are going to be more widely accepted very soon.
I own a shop and we usually charge a surcharge for people using Amex cards but recently an Amex sales person came in and offered us a rate that was almost the same as the Visa/Mastercard rate, so that we won't charge our customers the surcharge.
I think if they're doing that for everyone, then soon you'll be able to use the card at most places.
ditto elcheapo…retailers either flat out won't except the amex, or charger a fee.
Why bother.
the only reason i applied one is becoz they gave me a coffee machine. thereafter, use myer visa, which is much better deal. always receive their $20-$40 gift card
Agree.
American Express is GOOD because they give you freebies when you sign up (got a few signing up via CPA). However the card itself is useless because of the reasons stated above so normally we just cancel the card after we received the freebie :)
That's probably becuase elcheapo retailers get slugged a 7% commission instead of the usual 1/2% charged by visa/mastercard.
Before i sold my retail business we got hit with a 3.3 % transaction surcharge for AMEX which we passed onto customers…Have never heard of 7% before…Our mastercard/Visa was 1.1%. we looked at this way, 98% of customers who have AMEX also have a vc/mc so we encouraged our customers to pay the latter.
Last month, I used my Amex card for the following purchases, all without any surcharge: petrol, parking, groceries, car insurance, stuff from chemist, clothes, restaurant food, DVD rental, health insurance, life insurance, footy tickets, ADSL, books, and a donation. Sure, there are some places that either don't accept it or hit you with a surcharge, but Amex cards are far from useless.
Amex are not a good deal, regardless of whatever promo theyre running.
I worked for them once and they have a horrible Telstra-esque mentality.
Hmm…need to spend 10k per annum to get the annual fees back.
I gave up my amex card nearly 10 years ago - in contrary of what they promised, I got whacked with 3% - 7% extra surcharge just because it's amex, and worst, even here and mostly overseas, only less than half stores accepted amex card.
you get 1% back for their 3-7% surcharge ..
do the math ;p
