  • I picked one of these up last time when I was moving interstate, life saver!

  • Looking at getting some cheap internet for my parents. Is prepaid like this a good way to do it?

    • the thing about prepaid internet is it expires after only 30 days usually. if they're infrequent users of the internet, i reckon it's best to get something like amaysim's "$0.05 FOR 1MB" mobile broadband:
      http://www.amaysim.com.au/mobile-plans/amaysim-mobile-broadb…

    • Concerning mobile internet:
Atm definitely prepaid if you are a casual user as it has no contract, but data recharges are dearer per MB & has short data validity/expiry periods most commonly 30days. Postpaid locks you into contract, but has better data allowances. Downside is both types count upload data so is not really good for torrenting etc. Really depends on what your needs are.

Checkout the dodo $6.9 postpaid plan which includes 1GB data/mth, $0 starter sim + free post.
      https://connectto.dodo.com/wireless/Planselection.aspx?ct=6

Or take advantage of the $25 prepaid sim [8-16GB; 6mths data validity!] xmas offer recently posted that ends midnight 2nite so hurry…

Alternatively you could go cheap adsl2 starting at around $10 for low usage plans, but involves longer setup, modem etc. All adds up.

      Hope that helps.

      • Dodo seems to charge $24.90 for delivery (unless I'm missing something)

Also - for anyone - is there a Mobile Internet dongle or access point device that works with Android tablets (eg, Acer or ASUS)… yet?

    • If they don't use it much, dodo starter gives you up to 12 months for $49 including USB modem, or pull the sim and use in a 3G device.

  • +1

    It's a Huawei E153 modem, 3.6Mbps max download speed. Virgin doesn't use 1MB minimum data charge, I think it's 10KB - much better.

    • virgin explicitly advertise per kb accounting

  • sounds awesome , going on a road trip with a few mates and think were all gonna pick some up +++ thanks for the link.

Btw is there a site to see where u can access the coverage points or see how fast u can download from a certain area ?

    • virgin probably a link to coverage maps on their site. if not look at the optus web site.

  • Isn't stated what allowance you get on the Woolies brochure, but I assume the Telstra starter kit is this one:

    http://www.telstra.com.au/shop/Consumer/NGTSOProductDetailsV…

and you can get bonus phone and data credit on the Encore recharge. They seem to have changed the name of this recharge a couple of times.

  • Does anyone know if the virgin modem is locked to any network?

    • the last virgin usb modem i got was locked to optus. alot of the huawei modems can be easily unlocked.

  • Is this the same modem that's in the Target catalogue starting tomorrow for $24.50??

  • can it be unlocked anyone know?

  • Try this and let us know:
