    Rookie mistake
Valuable lesson learnt… gumtree cash only pickup

  • Take it as a lesson on how to be safe

I got his address, his name, his email, and his receipt etc.

    All fake…

    • Not if using payid I'm pretty sure it lists the real name on the account. But if course this doesn't mean you're getting any money back.

An I wrong about payid though?

    I paid with bank transfer

I hope you didn’t forget to say bye to your money

how did you arrive at the conclusion you got scammed?
can you outline the process please, i am new to the internet & very interested. thanks

    • He didn't receive his product……..

In all seriousness though, a bank transfer is a massive red flag for me. Pretty sure the bank can't help you once the money is gone, correct me if I'm wrong. Like everyone says on OzBargain always pay cash on Gumtree, that way you can see and inspect the product before buying it.

      • Yeah, meh, I've bought a few things off gumtree and used bank transfer as the items were interstate. I think $200 was the most expensive item so not the end of the world if I did get scammed.

They should make this a sticky.

GUMTREE IS FOR FACE TO FACE CASH PAYMENTS ONLY!!

There is pretty much no 5600x stock, and the processor is in NSW and I am in SA

      • +3

You still haven't got a 5600x and you've also lost your money IMO

      • +3

That's how they get you. A highly sought after item that is hard to find. Bet it was a good price too…

Contact the bank (fraud hotline if there is one) and see if you can cancel the transfer.

    • In any case, the sound of laughter might help cheer OP up.

    • +1

The problem with this and why they wont do it is that OP has no proof of anything.

It could go the other way around and the buyer could be defrauding the seller.as happens on many occassions as well.

Thats why banks probably wont get involved.
They are not involved in ecommerce. They just facilitate payments.

  • Did you call the police?

    • They wont be interested.

I sold my dell S2721DGF the other week, the guy came to my house to inspect etc etc…
After all these tests he says to me "so is bank transfer okay?"
I said "no it isn't i'd like cash only. Theres an atm around the corner i'll see you back here in 10 minutes cheers."

Guess what happened? I didn't get scammed and got my cash in hand.

Did you burn it to see if it has a red flame?

    • Hi there, gumtree has the paypal option. Is that also not a safe option? Could they do chargeback or something like that? I am wondering if you know anything about that?

      • Paypal via gumtree is the same as a bank transfer or cash transaction

        Paypal will not step in

        • +1

You need to get their email for PayPal and pay them through products and services so you have buyer protection, no matter what do not do it through gumtree as there is no buyer protection that way

    • Yep Perfect example of how sellers can get scammed

The OzBargin guessing competition should be on how many times the comment “Gumtree is only for cash only and face to face” has been written on the forum. I guess 100000000000000000 times

      100000000000000001 is my guess

      • I prefer JB HiFi vouchers ;)

        • Just a photo of the JB voucher and the pin will do, right?

        • What about Dicksmith gift cards :)

Popular product that's hard to buy. Bank transfer from interstate. On gumtree. I reckon it'll be fine.

  • Slight issue with your post, it states you 'bought a 5600X'.

Options; try your bank, if that fails it's a costly drive to NSW to visit a fake address.

So you don't even get a box with piece of rock?… Hmm seller is so stingy….
