Seems a reasonable drive but may be questionable warranty from comments in link above. I've bought 4 so will see how they go when they come in.

Edit: I've cancelled my order as it seems these drives may be OEM drives and therefore the warranty issues.

  • This should be in computing category no?

    • Oops. Didnt see that category. Anyhow its been fixed (before I got to it though)

Just beware that Amazon's packaging of these drives can (sometimes) be … inadequate, if they are shipped from overseas.

I bought one in December, it came like this:
      https://imgur.com/r/DataHoarder/Y3wEH

No complaints, probably quieter than the Seagate Ironwolf I was using before, and a shed load faster…

      • Was it in the original WD packaging box? Didn't see much marketing material outside that box

        • It was sealed in the usual antistatic bag, I actually dumped the box yesterday, I cant remember if was a WD box or not… I think it came as a box in a box, which could well have been the WD box inside an Amazon box… sorry I cant be more help…

          • @FLICKIT: After reading the comments below and the reviews, i believe the lack of packaging is due to it being OEM drives. This is such scammy tactics not to mention it in product description, possibly illegal. Not sure how warranty will work.

I've reported them on Amazon, hope to see less of these disguised OEM drives in the future.

@Hellcrusher3304: They don't have retail packaging so that's how they come. It'll have no impact on warranty either.

Internal hard drives never come in retail packaging. They're always OEM. They come in a box of 20-24. Warranty is unaffected.

              • @lostn: Interesting didn't know that. Recently purchased some NVME SSDs and all came with retail packaging.

So are you saying that even the Internal Hard Drives bought from stores say Umart, are all OEM and comes in a brown box like this?

                • @Hellcrusher3304: SSDs are not HDDs. They come in retail packaging.

Yes, they are all OEM. You can buy them without a complete system though.

You won't get a brown box at all. All you get is the drive inside an anti static bag. There's no external packaging. That brown box is their shipping box, which to their credit is better than I expected. Retailers don't get these packaged like that. It's an awful waste of space. It's not efficient to ship these things with each one taking up that much space. They'll get one big box with 20 drives inserted into styrofoam sockets.

There's a reason why OW, HN, and JB don't sell internal drives. The fact Amazon sells them makes me cautious. If they package their stuff as poorly as they package my games and DVD box sets, this thing is going to come DOA. The box used in the photo submitted is ok. I would like to see the drive encased in foam, not the plastic. Still, an internal HDD is something I'd rather buy from umart and pick it up myself. They are fragile and the most RMA'd component in your rig. I always bring a bubble envelope when I go to pick it up.

    Id be careful of these.
I purchased one from Amazon US last year, was marked as new and SMART status was empty, however a preclear showed a lot of reallocated sectors.

Looking at the same listing from Amazon US site:
    https://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Ultrastar-HUS728T8TAL…

Lots of reviews mentioning that warranty is not through WD, which could mean they are just used drives with wiped SMART stats.

    • that sucks. Thanks for the info. I'll cancel my order. :-( Not much of a bargain then. Its like buying fake goods.

      • These could just be OEM drives, but i'd be careful.
Must be loads of these ex-data centre drives lying around, i'd hate to see anyone else caught.
It really stinks like a "too good to be true" deal given how much these are brand new.

        • $387 ex gst is the best price I can get them for at the moment locally.
Its annoying that they are fake. I found the Amazon price by comparing the suppliers cost and thought it was odd that the 8tb drive price was cheaper than the 6tb price on Amazon.

Anyway I'll not risk this as its not for home use for me this time. Otherwise I'd probably give it a crack.

    • Is there any way to check if they're used?, do they have a manufacture date on them? (not going to pull mine out to look if not, lol)

      • The experience I had was with a 4th HGST here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/536194.
I run an unraid server, so first thing I do when i get a drive is put it under stress and read / write every sector multiple times (preclear). The drive returned multiple errors that a new drive should not return.

If they wiped the SMART stats, that would be the only way to tell if it's used or not.
Mine also had marking on the top / sides that looked like it had been sliding in and out of a server rack, but they were subtle.

      • I got some recently, the manufacture date (assuming not forged) was June 2020. Haven't done a full check on the smart status as i've had issues with my NAS hardware.

      • You might be able to input the serial number on their website warranty checker? Could give an indication of how old it really is?

    • what was the manufacture date on your drives? Or did they print a new drive label too?

      • No manufacture date on mine.

On the same note, the 12/14tb Seagate Exos X16s from the Amazon US page are US$250/$268 ~ AU$324/348 plus shipping, duties depending if you go over, and exchange rate differences, etc etc. Lots of the same calls for warranty issues are in the reviews and also beware that they're a partner and not Amazon, so again, be careful. Ordered two 14's yesterday will see how they go. Considering that MWave have them at $919, it was worth considering them.

  • I don't understand the negative comments about OEM drives. OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer. Why would there be any warranty issues for drives made by WD?

    • +1

From what I've read, it seems as though the channel for warranty repairs is through the OEM purchaser and their buying agreements vs directly through the manufacturer.

    • OEM in this instance refers to a 2nd party purchasing the drive to use in their equipment. THEY are the OEM, you are the 3rd party buying from them.
These are not drives marked for Retail sale, (warranty supported by WD), they are usually arranged in bulk deals with the serial numbers assigned to the OEM purchaser, may have different warranty conditions depending on the bulk buy arrangement with the supplier and the OEM.
EDIT: Seagate cover this on their website (i know not WD/HGST) however this explains it. WD do not need to support or enforce warranty, all up to retailer.
      https://www.seagate.com/support/kb/warranty-guidelines-for-o…

However, given the above I am still suspicious of these being new.

  • considering how poor Amazon packages their stuff, I don't trust buying internal HDDs from them. They don't even come in retail packaging.

Also, it's cheaper per GB to buy an external 12TB and shuck it.

    • Which ones are the best shuckers at the moment? Last time I did it was Seagate Expansion 2GB's

      • +1

if you go 16TB or bigger from memory with Seagate you get the Exos enterprise drives (so w00t, bargain but loud), below that could be SMR (14TB could be Exos too, not sure)

WD is SMR only from 8TB up and the "white" drives in them used to be helium HGST variants but now are air variants (basically the drive in this listing for 8TB, but with a firmware munting the speed from 7200rpm to "5900 rpm class", that's a whole other kettle of fish where the TL;DR is you get the noise and power of a 7200RPM with the performance of a 5900/5400RPM)

WD you'd shuck the "Elements" models cause they're the cheapest/most common, though the same drives would be in "My Books" and the like too. Probs more up to date into on Reddit under the datahoarders sub (not sure exact spelling sorry)

I got lucky and got 3x 8TB heliums ages ago, have a 12TB as well but didn't shuck it so not sure if it is helium or not as it plugs into a NAS via USB3 anyway

        • cheers mate will look at those

  • +1

I bought one about a year ago and it was packaged well for amazon (in supportive cardboard frame in a fitted box) and no issues with the drive
but damn its loud and hot. Wont buy another.

All new drives im getting are ironwolfs - after WD messed me around with SMR drives (then replacing them with refurb drives and not wanting to honour warranty on one of those when it failed). Installed 1 ironwolf in its place, its quite, cool and faster than WD Red.

    • It's all model by model unfortunately. I got burnt by a series of Seagates all spitting reallocated sectors and the RMA replacements doing it too years back, so went WD only for years after that, but now they're dying with age and the SMR thing made Seagate cheaper/easier to get & it has been great. The little Ironwolf runs cooler even in the middle slots of the NAS than the 3x WD40EFRX (PMR so harder to get another matching drive) surrounding it.

      • yea and down to personal luck

Iv always been happy with seagate but when i bought the WD drives they seemed to get a better rep but then SMR gate happened…
