These seem popular, but … living in Australia, we just have to wait for any day over 35 degrees, and we can go outside and get all the fried air we want! ;-)

Ooh - no one seems to have a sense of humour, here have an upvote ;)

Their XL not really that L

  • How different it is from HD9630-21?

I have this model and can confirm it's great. The basket is also alot easier to deal with than previous models which had a wire/mesh basket. This one has rectangular holes cut out of the non-stick material basket. Easier to clean etc.

I have this exact model. It was a new release on special during Black Friday last yr for $259 at Big W. It's awesome because there's no mesh so it's a lot easier to clean with a sponge - see image https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/182438/84900/snapchat-…
Although perhaps one could argue that the premium models have mesh to allow more airflow and better cooking whereas this is the more basic one in the cheaper Philips range?

Also, the Philips XL doesn't seem that much bigger compared to their XXL. I went to see the premium models and put both baskets inside one another to check the difference and there wasn't a whole lot tbh - see image https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/182438/84807/20201125_…

    • Does your drawer fit flush? We have the so-called premium XXL model but after a few months of usage the drawer plastic has warped and now there's a gap. Apparently a common problem and Phillips says it's normal.

Wondering if these different shaped ones are better in that regard.

      • We use ours at least twice a week and so far the drawer still fits perfectly.. Then again it's only been three months so fingers crossed it can hold up. Perhaps you could take it back to the place of purchase for an exchange? Unless they point you directly to Philips.

      • Btw I handwash mine to sustain the non-stick element. Do you put yours in the dishwasher by any chance?

        • We handwash ours as well. It's just the outer plastic drawer and not the inside mesh that's warped. Good to hear yours is still flush! Might consider "upgrading" if it gets worse, ours developed in less than 3 months.

  • Anyone able to comment on these phillips vs the anko airfryer from kmart (pretty big capacity)and in terms of cooking quality?

    • phillips vs the anko

      More expensive

    • I bought the anko 5.3l air fryer last week and returned it yesterday. I know many air fryer's smell like plastic when you first get them and your supposed to run them in without food until the smell goes away. In my case the smell didn't go away after more than an hour of running it at max temperature and I wasn't happy with that. The other thing I didn't like was that it had a manual timer that made a really loud ticking sound when it was on. I wondered if I was over reacting to how loud it was so I checked with a couple of my family members and they agreed it was annoyingly loud

I can't comment on how well it cooks food as I never got that far but I suspect it would work fine as it has a powerful 1800W element (many are 1400W) and fan.

The inside lining of the Anko is made of plastic while the Philips XL is made of stainless steel. I'm not saying all plastic lined air fryers will stink but I do think it's probably the source of the problem for the anko. Maybe it would get better if you ran it for even longer but with the timer issue I couldn't be bothered finding out.
