Audio Technica ATH-R70X Open Back Headphones $349 + Delivery (Free with mVIP/ Sydney C&C) @ Mwave

150

Solid pair of neutral open-backs—Audio Technica's version of the Sennheiser HD600, with better bass and soundstage but some hear grain in the treble. Probably will want an amp with these.

  • What's comfort like on these compared for the HD600?

    • They're lighter but the ear pads are smaller so it may touch your ears. Some ppl also don't like the wing system on it (I've got AD700s and I don't mind it too much personally)

Bigger issue with the earpads is how they'll interact with glasses, as they'll place a lot of pressure on the arms in some cases. Aside from that, the odd person may find their ears squeezed in a bit, but there's enough space.

Great sound though, definitely a solid mix of the HD 650 and HD 600 timbre & tonality with its own take on bass, sound stage and imaging. They're very transparent without smoothing over the mids like those two do, so they can be hit and miss with EDM-related music depending on how many effects and filters are thrown on to vocals. Treble is fantastically delivered.

Bass can at times be a little more diffuse than the rest of the mix, and because of the design the bass is delivered often more like you would expect from a closed back (just without as much rumble as you might expect). I suspect that would change if you moved away from the stock velour pads, but it's an uncommon mix.

I understand why people love the HD6XX/HD650 given that liquid sound, but this is such a great all-rounder that can genuinely put you in a performance space. I feel like this and headphones like the HIFIMAN Sundara will offer more than the HD6XX as time goes on because they excel when music is well recorded and mixed.

Pfft! What a load of tosh. Snap out of it Jass.
You don’t have to sound like one of those audiophile nuts.

          • @Lps: The shorter version of that is that it sounds natural and the sense of the space is natural as well, but purely from a musical perspective some may wish to sacrifice the sense of space in order to get Sennheiser's take on the mid-range.

  • Thanks for the post, managed to grab one myself. For some reason I managed to get free shipping with Startrack selected as an option without being a mVIP so others might be able to get it delivered for free too?

  • seems it has replaceable cables too.

They have a locking mechanism to them, so you need to check for that before purchae.
