Help with buying a vacuum cleaner

If anyone cares to read through the detailed description below and go through the sites, then please help me.

Hope all of you had a great xmas and are still enjoying the festive season. I want to buy a new vacuum for my house but the salesman at different stores have confused me. I don't want to spend too much on it. My budget is min $100 to max $250. I am confused as the reps from Godfreys told me I need at least a 2000W machine for my home (a 4 bed carpet home) and they told me Electrolux is not a good brand. And the reps from Harvey Norman told me that Electrolux is a very good brand. Also, I don't know if a turbo head is good or a standard head will make things any better.

I am confused between 3 models:

Electrolux Jetmaxx - http://www.harveynorman.co.nz/electrolux-jetmaxx-vacuum-clea…

Hoover Heritage 5010 - http://www.godfreys.com.au/hoover-heritage-5010

Nilfisk Meteor Deluxe MBD - http://consumer.nilfisk.com.au/Products/VacuumCleaners/Consu…

If you're not a Choice member, just check your local library for the relevant issues! :)

IMHO don't buy bagless; that was my big mistake. I'm now forever cleaning or replacing filters!!! :(

    • Thanks StewBalls. I will try going to my local lib for a copy of the choice magazine.

  • Im not sure about those 3 models I've heard they all SUCK!

    Sorry couldn't resist. XD

    mate….ever heard of a dyson?

    • +1

My budget is min $100 to max $250

That would be lucky to get you a Dyson dustbuster! :p

    • i have heard a lot about them mate…. but the very basic dyson (decent size) is more than $450 when on sale

  • Hmm. I'll highly recommend not listening to the sales reps and getting something with a turbo/powered heard, particularly if you have carpets.

When I was shopping around last year, I went to Godfrey's in Chadstone to check out their selection. The rep was trying to get me to buy a red Hoover model for $300, saying this price will only last until the end of that day. I told him that I'll have a look at prices/reviews online, then his manager came up to me very condescendingly and said Hoover is the world's oldest and greatest vacuum cleaner brand and I should know that without reading reviews. I was really pissed off and called him a stupid retail worker and I know more than a high school dropout dropkick.

I finally ended by getting a Dyson DC29 on sale from Myer at a very good price with a 6 year warranty. It has a turbo head, and I was blown away by how much dirt it picked up from my carpets. It works very well and the carpets almost look steamcleaned when I'm done with them. As it's bagless it's very easy to use, and emptying it is just pressing a button.

Also, a few years ago I bought another Dyson on eBay (from the US) for half the price it sells here. I didn't realise that the voltage was different and it blew up the moment I plugged it in.

    • Thanks for the advice maldrat but I seriously don't have that much money too spend right now. Got a home 2 years ago, had a baby last year and wife is not working now…. so you can imagine I will be stretching myself for a Dyson.

      • Just get a generic high powered one with a turbo head then. You can't go wrong.

        This leaves the Hoover out.

Electrolux aren't the best, but will do the job. The Jetmaxx has decent reviews. I doubt if it would be a lot better than generic ones from Kmart etc.

      • ebay and gumtree is your best mate for used dyson

  • I wouldn't mind going for a different vacuum as well. The 3 I posted here are all that I found in my price range with turbo heads. If you know of a different vacuum which is less than $250 and is comparable, please let me know.

I have the Kogan one (the more expensive one). I got it for $79 delivered two months ago and it's awesome so far.

I must agree with StewBalls though, I don't think my next vacuum cleaner will be bagless.

i like the bagless, what is the problem with bagless.

to OP, i agree with kiriakoz with this kogan vacuum cleaner.

You'll only have experience the 'pleasure' of cleaning that HEPA filter ONCE to gain all the perspective on bagless you'll ever need. Then feel that joy once a month minimum & you'll be crying for a bag you can just pluck out & drop in the bin!!!

        • I like the bagless. The good thing about the HEPA filter IMO is that the room stays cleaner much longer. My filters are not that hard to clean and I'd prefer to do that rather than vacuum more often.

        • remove my filter wash it and dry it, less than 5 minutes. what is the problem? i still don't get it.

        • Hmm, dust storm at the otto bin or muddy mess in the laundry tub…those are the choices! Then there's the couple of hours drying in the sun if it's a hot day, if not you're waiting half a day or more for it to dry!

I don't know how you're drying yours in 5mins, but I hope you're not putting it back in wet, coz I know my manual says this is a big no-no. Makes sense too coz last I heard electricity & water don't play well together!!!

Bag vac: pull out bag, drop in bin, click in new bag, start vacuuming…literally seconds, no mess to clean up…end of story! ;)

        • My routine is - bucket of water, hand squeeze filter for a few minutes, run under tap until water is clear. Tip dirty water in garden. Dry filter overnight (on top of water heater). Must say I've been considering getting another filter so there is no downtime waiting for it to dry.

        • +1

hand squeeze filter for a few minutes

Squeeze??? Is it made of foam or something? Are you sure you're talking about the HEPA filter?

Mine (and any I've seen) is made of a concertina of paper-like fibre in a plastic shroud…even if you could, squeezing would crush it!

        • +1

i mean removing and clean and put it back is 5 mnts, but drying is 1/2 day :)
but i don't vacuum my place every day. so it okay for me

        • Mine actually has 3 filters. Cyclonic - rinse under tap. Air inlet filter - thick foam pad - squeeze in water. Hepa filter - rinse under tap - I replaced after 6 months - cost $17.

        • is it ur vacuum is dyson Alice?

        • I have several vacuum cleaners, collected over time, for different needs. The HEPA is a Hoover Hurricane - for hard floors and dusting - window sills, blinds, and light enough for carrying up the stairs (whilst cleaning them) and getting spiders off the ceiling etc (wouldn't buy another (Hurricane) because I prefer ones with super sucking power :} but cheap enough and meets some needs well). A Roomba - for hard floors - good for keeping a clean floor clean and getting under beds. Hoover upright (about 15 years old) for carpets, great sucking power but heavy and cumbersome. Karcher wet and dry - for cleaning the combustion heater, car, and dust from renovations (brick dust) and other very dirty work. I'm of the opinion that you need to purchase a vacuum according to the type of environment you live in and your needs.

    Hey Mate,
Can't comment on the 3 models you have listed but can advice you on why you should NOT buy VAX Power Plus 6. :)

It worked well for 2 months, but it's problems were really obvious just after few days. Bad build quality and really not thought out design. it came with 3yrs warranty so I have to call them first thing in the new year to get it fixed (hopefully they would atleast do that part). Really dissapointed after spending over $300 on that.

  • Thanks to all for your valuable input. So far I have came to the decision that bagless is not the way to go (its a double benefit as missus also hates cleaning the filters of our old bagless). Also, if I am not buying an expensive one then any ordinary vacuum will do….

Considering this, can someone please tell me what is the best vacuum under $250.

All I can offer in that regard is that currently Target & Myer both have quite a few vacuum cleaner models at 50% off. I will probably end up having a look myself to see if I can get a baggie job at a nice price!

You can spy them all at http://www.lasoo.com.au :)

      • Thanks StewBalls. I will check out the ones in Target & Myer. If you end up getting one soon, could you please advice me how you find it or what you got? Cheers.

Will do, I can't guarantee my speediness though, I'm in full holiday mode ATM…let's just say that very little, other than harrassing you guys on OzB & watching a lot of South Park, is getting done right now! ;)

  • While electrolux used to make good vacuum cleaners they are mediocre at best these days, and have been for a number of years now. Vax is not much better.

    • How about Nilfisk then? I have seen good reviews about them and the Miele's.

    BUYYYYY THISSSSS

    http://www.amazon.de/Siemens-VS06G2410-Bodenstaubsauger-sync…

imported cost is around $140 AUD delivered

    Siemens = bosh = Miele

It performs better than my $1000 miele (i have both) in terms of power

you will not regret it. Just use google translator to read the reviews on amazon.

    • Thanks for this awesome bargain.

Is it possible to get the bags for this locally? Any suggestions?

      Thanks again.

  • I was shopping around for some vacuums a few months back and went through what you felt, salesperson, internet reviews etc…

I went for my gut feeling and walked into kmart to buy a cheap vacuum with decent power. i bought a kmartbrand $69 2400W bagless vacuum.. 8 months later still works like a charm and there is always the warranty and return policy from kmart

  • dyson all the way….i've bought so many vacuum cleaners in my lifetime and all have died on me…don't settle for anything less…unless you do renovations and need a vacuum that you can scratch and throw around…

anyway, i have also heard the new ball dysons are not as good as the older dysons..my pick of the bunch would be a dc23…not too heavy and does the job…

    • Dyson's rock!

anyone can help me on this one? Is this thing good? compare to vax zen ?
    thanks

    • Depends what you want to use it for. See my post above.

  • Hi there!

I would highly recommend a Dyson - however as that doesn't fit with your budget (understandbly) I would go with an Electrolux. Highly reputable - that sales dude is probably steering you towards a more profitable product or one with more stock.

Bagless is the way to go (reading from earlier posts - a Dyson has not lost suction nor had to have its bagless cup replaced).

    GOODLUCK!!

    • Electrolux is amongst a group of 'reputable' brands that used to assure a quality product, but the name alone is no longer a guarantee. Our last electrolux was rubbish.

  • Dyson DC29 Allergy for $305 delivered is good.

    http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B004VCWB64

    • are u sure free delivery to australia? sorry mate i can't read germany

      • No free delivery to Australia. It's 252 -tax + delivery = ~250 EUR
