"A lightweight machine, the Vax has rubber wheels meaning that it is extremely versatile and suitable for all floor types. The quiet motor allows for a user-friendly cleaning experience, and the HEPA 12 antibacterial filter will serve to protect asthma and allergy sufferers. Compared to other multi-cyclonic vacuums with similar features, the Zen is exceptionally good value."

I was consdering buying a Dyson DC29 (deal here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/60538) but at a price of $360 - $450 it was stretching my budget. Even worse, some OzBargainers were denied sub-$400 price points even when showing receipts as proof other people had scored $360-400.

While doing reseach on the Dyson I came across the Vax Zen on special during Godfreys "Garage Sale" for $199 which is apparently $200 off RRP (I know RRP can be taken with a grain of salt but it was worth further investigation and I found The Good Guys offer it for $350).

Vax has been a reputable brand in the vacuum cleaner market since the 1970's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vax_(vacuum)

I found some very good reviews online about this particular model: http://www.productreview.com.au/p/vax-zen-cylinder.html

On my way to Godfreys yesterday afternoon I dropped by my local Good Guys as I buy a lot of stuff there. They had none in stock but some on order - they sell it for $350 - the rep said $199 was an amazing price for this brand/model of vacuum cleaner.

So I walked into Godfreys and walked out 2 mins later with a new Vax Zen. We have only used it once so far (last night) but both myself and my partner are very pleased with the performance.. in fact she had to open the little vent on the handle to reduce the suction a bit.

WHAT I LIKE:
- much quieter than our previous vacuum cleaners
- decent length telescopic wand so I do not get a sore back from leaning forward (I am tall)
- long power cord so we just managed the whole house from 1 central power plug (our old cheapie could not do that)
- 3 year warranty (many in the sub $200 price bracket have 1-2 year warranty)

I have not used the Dyson so cannot say how the performance compares, but at half the price I believe this is a bargain for similar specs.

    This deal SUCKS! XD

    • Hmm… Key features of the vacuum.. "No Loss of Suction" :)

  • Thanks Op.

Am in the market for vacuum too but do not wish to spend more than $200.

Will definitely look more into this

I'd rather spend $450 on a dyson than $200 on any other brand.

    • I'm sure this Vax is a good model, and looks a tiny bit Dyson-ish, but after purchasing a Dyson on sale for <$400 a year ago, wondering why everyone loves them so much, I've been converted, and as SpaceNinja said, I'd too rather spend $450 on a Dyson than $200 on anything else.

Positive from me though - saving of $200 is a bargain :)

    • A friend lent us their old Dyson for a while prior to taking up this deal. Much preferred the Samsung thanks to the lower noise, though the attachments and after sales support doesn't seem as strong as your Mieles and Dysons, so we don't expect it will last the decade.

Bagless vacs with lower-than-average noise levels are pretty rare, so it's nice to see another option. Here's hoping this is an area Dyson will choose to focus on at some stage.

  • how many hepa filter comes with it?

    anyone tried kogan? verdict??

    • It has a HEPA 12 rating which is pretty high (at the upper end for "Superior residential, better commercial, hospital laboratories" - guide here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_Efficiency_Reporting_Va… )

It has 2 removable filters.. one intake filter.. and one outgoing filter. The manual suggests checking/cleaning the filters approx every 6 months with average use.

One of the filters is washable.. the other is shake clean only.

Replacement filter kits (both filters) are available if required.

I have one of these, and it's does a great job and is so much quieter than a dyson.

  • searched around, most of them have no stock
the one has it mentioned i have to traded in my old one for the special!

    • There is no need for any trade in - this model is listed in their TV ads (as the brand too famous to mention at half price), website, and in-store signage for $199 straight up..

Their current "garage sale" nationwide sale has been going for a couple of weeks now.. perhaps I got lucky walking into my local store (Robina) 2 days ago and getting one.

A lot of suppliers are closed over the Xmas/NY period so they will likely have more stock arriving in the first or second week of Jan if the sale lasts until then, or if it can be paid for at sale price and wait for stock.

      • yeah, i told the person, he insisted and said that's the way they do specials…… and refuse to sell me :(

    • Robina has at least 1 boxed and 1 display model in stock today (Saturday 31st December - New Years).

I just noticed the Godfreys website is back to $399 for this model.. although the stores may still do the $199 price if you say you came in for that deal.

  • This looks great, but I bought a crappy one recently, wish I hadn't now.

Got one of this yesterday. Works well, sucks as much as other models (hoover etc.) I tried in store and couldn't notice much difference and build quality seems to be good. Definitely better than my old Vax. Can't compare with Dyson though (except price) as I never used one.

bought one today. and imo its brilliant. best $200 on a cleaning product ever. its actually pretty fun.. i cleaned the whole house just to see it spin around the canister and to see if i could fill it up :)

  • Going by the reviews, looks like most people bought this at $199. This must be the normal price, RRP of $399 being the inflated price.

Anyone knows the country of manufacture for this?

    • Yeah I noticed 2 people in the reviews said they got it for $199 on sale at Godfreys between June and October 2011… another person paid $350 at Bunnings which matches the Good Guys price.

Perhaps Godfreys sell it for $350-399 between sales and then arrange a special bulk deal with the supplier when they have big sales.

Some online retailers are offering the purple "R" (reach) model for as low as $299 - it has a turbo brush and longer reach hose than the standard orange model.

The turbo brush from our old (and useless) Electrolux fits nicely on the new Vax Zen :)

Thanks for this, brought one today, if $200 is their normal price then this is a dyson killer.. I think the fact it has a three year warranty and contact numbers all over the box is enough to say they will support their product, it is made in china, however so is this 5 year old macbook pro I'm typing on..

thanks OP, got the last (display) model from a nearby store. timely replacement for the old machine that recently lost a noticeable bit of suction power.

  • How often do you need to change the filters? A new replacement set is $50 at Godfreys.

    • the sale person told me to clean every 6 months and change every 1 year

is this one good compare to vax zen ? only 99 dollars at the moment

    • The good thing about godfreys website is it lists down all the features in a table. I find it very useful when comparing different models/make.

    • Lower specs across the board, as expected for the lower price:

      • 5m power cord (Zen is 8m)
      • 2 year warranty (Zen is 3 years)
      • 2 litre capacity (Zen is 2.6 L)
      • not recommended for Pet hair (Zen is recommended for pet hair)
      • rod length 89cm (Zen is 100cm - good for tall people)

Both have HEPA filters but I would be very surprised if the Hoover HEPA filter is rated as high as the Zen (rating 12)

  • thank you for the advise. Just thought that if it's comparable then should be ok, Hoover is 2000W where Vax Zen only 1600W

    • High wattage does not necessarily translate to better suction when compared across different models. A good cyclonic design may mean that less power is required. But higher wattage definitely means higher power bill.

      • I agree… can say with certainty than the 1600w Vax has much more powerful suction (feels like 50-100% more) than our 1800w Electrolux

  • Well I've been convinced with all these positive reviews and went to buy one for myself. I've tried it out and it's been great so far, from strong suction to the quietness of the machine. However I found that the cord does not retract well compared to my old Volta machine. At the push of the button, it retracts only 1m or so of the cable, and I have to either manually try to feed it in or to give it a quick short pull to trigger the mechanism again. All in all, it's 5-6 times of manual effort before it is fully retracted. Anyone finding the same issue?

  • Got one today from Cranbourne (VIC). Impressed, and a great buy to replace the old Nilfisk that died today…
