Optus Locked Smartphones - Oppo AX5s $45, Samsung Galaxy A30 $60, in-Store Only @ Kmart

950

Spotted this at my local Kmart (Stud Park) and thought they were amazing prices for what you get.

Oppo AX5s is the 3GB RAM / 64GB Storage version and locked to Optus. The red variety was definitely $45, but can't 100% confirm that the Black is the same price.
Other places are still selling it for ~$189-$229
Specs - https://www.gsmarena.com/oppo_a5s_(ax5s)-9626.php

Samsung Galaxy A30 is 3GB RAM / 32GB Storage and also locked to Optus.
Other places are selling it for ~$300
Specs - https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_a30-9579.php

That being said, if I had to pick between the two, I would recommend paying the extra $15 for the A30 is a much better phone, where even though it has less storage, it has a higher resolution screen and is AMOLED, so it looks just as stunning as the flagship phones (just with lower performance). The A30 also runs Android 10, compared to the AX5s' Android 8.1 with Color OS (security updates from December 2020).

EDIT: Here are the receipts for the two phones - https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/54993/87237/20210226_1…

Are any of these operator locked phone, unlockable? I know that you can get some codes on ebay to unlock, but the last time i tried it was years ago, so not sure if that's still even possible.

  • How many of the A30 are left at Stud Park?

    • +1

Just called them and sold out. :(

  • I can't find Samsung Galaxy A30 on Kmart's website. Good luck finding this in your nearby stores.
And OPPO Ax5s is listed for $129 on Kmart website.

    • That's the black one.
Red variant for $45 is a bargain!

  • Considering it is locked to Optus would it work on VMNO based on Optus network like Amaysim?

    • +2

I would say so. I havent only experienced that Telstra locked phones is only working on Telstra full networks like Boost.

      • +1

I have locked one and it worked on dodo and catch

    • +1

It might. I had the same question for a different phone and the consensus answer online seemed to be 'probably'. So I bought it (Optus X Wave) and it did work with my Amaysim.

    • +1

Amaysim are pretty much owned by Optus now and use the same APNs, so the answer is yes.

  • +1

Can this be unlocked at FoneFunShop? I unlocked an A20 previously, and it worked fine.

  • Yes, Samsung A30 can be used with Amaysim. I used live chat to get the code (didn't even ask for the reason). However, it took almost 1 month for them to send to me. Pretty sure the same with other Optus-locked phones.

  • From my previous experience working for all the telcos..

All phones are unlockable. You just need the code. You should be able to get it from Optus if you call and pay the amount they ask. I knew someone who did it for me who worked there but that was a while back

    • +1

Free unlock code after one year.

      • Since the phone is already 2 years old, can we claim now immediately? Some others have seemed to said so.

        • I am not sure about how one year is measured. I got the code a few days after one year (from purchase date) upon online request last time.

  • +3

Remember, Optus phones, if not mistaken, are missing Telstra 850MHz band. They didn't ask for any payment when I asked the code via live chat.

    • Do you mean after 6 months’ of usage ?

      • +1

No, they didn't ask anything. I had it for probably just 1 month. The problem was it wasn't in their system. They asked me to to wait next week, and next week, and next week. Until, one day, I received it in my email after kept coming back to live chat almost every week for almost a month.

        • +1

Still much better than Telstra. You have to wait next month, next month, next month until you contact the Telco Ombudsman to step in.

    • +2

850Mhz? you mean the old Telstra NextG band? This is being quickly replaced by the 4G band28 (700Mhz). Telstra have already shut off their 3g 2100Mhz services, and will shut down the rest of the 850Mhz (nextG) by 2024.

It's always worth checking what bands a phone supports, but, Optus and Telstra are mostly using the same ones now [for 4G]: https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

      • +1

and will shut down the rest of the 850Mhz (nextG) by 2024.

So by 2024 all Telstra-based MVNOs will presumably be using VoLTE on their wholesale network?

Funny how it is 2021 now and apart from Boost, not a single other Australian MVNO could offer VoLTE/VoWiFi.

        • +1

I still wonder how it will all pan out, given that VoLTE requires your telco provider to support the 'firmware' of the device.
Currently, we may use any device on any telco, i.e. lesser known brands like Xiaomi, or other overseas brands but our phones still work, since there is still the 3G Network (850 Mhz on Telstra, 900 Mhz on Vodafone & Optus, 2100 Mhz on Optus)

However, come 2024 (I know still a long way to go), I think either:
          1) Telcos would need to expand support for firmware of almost all 4G devices to allow VoLTE
          2) We may not be able to use phones of our choice and our choice will be limited to using phones, the firmware of which is approved/supported by our telco.

If Option 2 above happens, it is going to shake up the mobile handset industry, and a lot of OzBargainers as well.

    • Your link says that the phone cost $129 and not $45

      • Special is for Red, but link not found

    • Is this price universal? If you find it in a store, is it $45/60 or $129?

      • Price looks to be universal (for the red oppo), but North/west Melbourne : no stock.
        Barcode is "9341106696836".
I scanned it at the price check, but couldn't find stock.

The black one is $129, and also scans $129.

      • Checked at Knox out of stock but the A30 had a clearance price of $90 instead of $60.

No stock of Oppo AX5s red either.

        • One Kmart i went to had it for $60. Another for $90. Both out of stock (Kardinya, Garden City WA)

    • You can't use this link, it shows stock for the black which is still $129 and has no relation at all with the red!
I was in store, and they had 3 black ones, but they were scanning at $129. And they didn't want to sell for $45.

  • because many store still scan them at different price, could anyone can post the receipt of Oppo AX5s @ $45 and Samsung Galaxy A30 @ $60, your help would be great appreciated.

    • Is it confirmed that other stores are scanning them at other prices?

    • +1

I have added the image for the receipts above.

      • Photo of barcode…. Self Serve….Profit 🤣

    Kmart website…

Sorry, we found no results for "Samsung A30"

We've looked everywhere but couldn't find any items. Check the spelling or try less specific search terms.

    • -2

Two neg votes REALLY!!! WTF for?

  • why is it so cheap? i just bought a A21s last month for 289

    • Because A21 now exists

    • There will be very little stock anywhere

    • that mean don't buy Samsung or don't spend over $100 for Samsung… XD

  • pitty no nfc. do both aust stock model have dual sim slots?

    • +1

      A30 has NFC

      • Why do you use nfc for? I mean other than contactless payments

        • +2

Some headphones and speakers can be paired to phones via NFC. My workplace in particular has an NFC tag to connect people to the WIFI without the use of a password. Other than that I guess it can be seen as more convenient than having to focus your phone's camera on a QR code.

        • +1

          Public transport?

  • +3

National pricing. Good luck finding stock.

    • Is their Call Centre any help?

      • +2

No, called 3 stores no response.
Drove to 1 store, no stock.
They checked the stock, 1 store was showing 1 in stock, drove there but was sold 5 hours before (so the stock from other stores is not live).

  • Re:Unlock codes :Where's Bagman when you need him?

Got the last A30 at Kmart Marion. Staff said There is one A5X red left. The box is damaged but the phone will be ok. Scanned at $45, jump on it!

  • No stock at Robina, PAC fair, Australia fair, Elanora.

  • Those interested in the Oppo AX5s RED, use SKU 42779995 to ask when you call up the store to check stock. Confirmed this is the SKU for the Red variant which is not listed on their website, but the store will be able to tell you stock availability based on this SKU Code. Good luck!

    • Probably depends from store to store, but I called 4 stores, after waiting 5-15min each, I gave up.
Also do not depend on what 1 store says of "in stock" in another store (they showed the stock screen to me, so I trusted it was in stock). I relied on that and drove to that store to pick up (because they were not picking up the phone). And it was sold 5 hours before I got there (and I only took 15minutes to get there).
But yeah, if they pickup, you're probably lucky and you can save yourself a trip (or at least make sure it's worth the trip).

TLDR; call the store where you want to pick up (don't rely on stock information obtained from another store).

      • Agree. The stock levels are apparently not "Live" aa pointed out by others as well. It is best to call the store and confirm. And to accept the fact that by the time you reach there, ir could well have been sold by then. For the price, its a gamble and dependent on luck.

  • QLD Folks — The Oppo AX5s Red is in stock at Arana Hills (4054) and Maroochydore (4558).

Just walk to the counter and provide SKU Code 42779995 & they should get it for you. It is "low stock" so unsure how many pieces exactly, but if interested, make your move now.

  • Found a store with 2 remaining

    • Oppo or Samsung? Which one(s) did you grab?

  • +2

I called ahead at Chirnside Park, VIC and asked them to hold the A30 one for me. Picked it up an hour ago.

Sales person said there was one more A30 left!

    Thanks OP 👍🏼

  • Also, did anyone also note that these phones come with an Optus Prepaid SIM included? As per the ongoing offer, a free $30 recharge will be applied on activation of the SIM by 28/3/21. Asking as I didn't see it mentioned anywhere in this deal.

I just selected a random Optus Oppo phone from optus.com.au/prepaid and scrolled down to see the "Terms and Conditions"

Prepaid SIM: Includes $30 value. Expiry and inclusions will depend on selected plan. Free $30 recharge: Includes $30 recharge value, applied in one transaction when you activate included SIM. Offer excludes Optus Flex plan. Excludes Optus X Lite devices. Offer ends 28/3/21, unless extended. Includes all Optus Prepaid smartphones.

A similar text is also on the Optus Official Page for Oppo AX5s Red but it can be accessed only by Google Search (direct link from optus.com.au/prepaid has been removed as it is out of stock. For the AX5s it mentions though:

Includes $30 recharge value, applied in one transaction when you activate included SIM. Excludes Optus X Lite. Offer ends 27/9/20, unless extended. Includes all Optus Prepaid smartphones.

Now given that it says "unless extended", I think it has been extended till 28/3/21 for now (given that the SIM would be independent of the "phone" and the T&C well says it includes all Optus Prepaid Smartphone.

    • How did you go with this? Get the bonus $30?

      • I haven't got the phone myself. No stock nearby. But I reckon all bundled Optus Prepaid Phones which include a SIM card will get a $30 recharge on activation of the SIM. Currently ends 28/3/21 "unless extended" which seems to be extending perpetually since a long time.

Why is it that most of the times these offers seem to have stock largely in VIC? Has the lockdown(s) got to do anything with the sales there?

      • Not in the area I'm living apparently …

    • +1

Got the last A30 staff told me :)

  • anyone bought black Oppo AX5s for $45? if so, much appreciated if you could post a receipt here or pm the receipt to me please

    • The OP posted a receipt

      • OP posted red Oppo AX5s receipt for $45, im looking for BLACK Oppo AX5s receipt for $45

        • Ah sorry

        • Black is available at $129.
You won't get a receipt for Black variant for $45, AFAIK.

          • @djoz: correct, I asked and they did not want to sell the black for $45.

            • @johnmelb: Yup, a few stores I called too had the Black for $129. And no stock of Red. The Clearance Tag says this was $70 for the Red on 22/02. Might as well reduce for the black as well, if it remains unsold, I reckon.

              • @djoz: Yeah, I don't come in very often in Kmart, so will probably miss out.

Which option on the phone did you take to speak with them?
I took the last one (5) - the other options didn't really seem to match for phones.
(I called 4 stores, and I never got a hold of anybody. Granted the 1st day was kinda late, 7-8pm, but store was still open. But the second day it was around 10-11am. Didn't manage to get through at all.
Last time with similar clearance, I did manage to get through and was very polite, but was immediately snapped at when I said I was calling for stock level of the clearance item.)

                • @johnmelb: I take option 4 on the call. Has been the correct department at all times when I called multiple stores.

  • Did anyone use the posted receipts or deal photo showing the marked down prices for Price Match / Price Beat anywhere? Or are the 'Optus locked' phones not available anywhere else where we may Price Beat? I don't think its available at Officeworks.

    No A30 stock though.

Ask for them to hold the item for 24 hours and give your name if you are sure you will get it.

    • A30 at $30? Whaaaa?

      • Yes, A30 dollar phone :) Sales assistant advised me she was obliged to say there was no "Change of mind return" available for clearance items.
