Data Recovery - Shucked HDD Formatted as RAW

Need help or suggestions retrieving data from a shucked HDD the data is shown as raw in disk management.
Only shucked the HDD because the USB interface died and wanted to check if the HDD itself was alive.
The HDD is a Seagate barracuda and was originally apart of a Seagate expansion drive.
The USB interface controller looks like a ASM1053 (ASMEDIA)
Thanks for any help provided.

What OS are you trying? Have you tried Linux or Gparted Live to see what either of these say?

Windows is not the best OS to use to recover data with IMHO based on past experience. It has gotten better, but Linux is still better.

    • I'm on Windows 10. Did not want to approach the Linux avenue unless desperate, which it seems I may have to. Do you happen to have any links I could follow to attempt such?
As i tried Testdisk but seemingly hit a dead end.

Alot of external disks can only be accessed by the controller in the external it came with. Make sure that this disk is not one of those first.

I have two Buffalo drives (one with a Seagate in, and one with a Samsung in), and they only worked with the internal USB interface. I couldn't get anything from them when I tried connecting directly.

  • How desperate are you for the data?
I had a sort of similar problem recently and found a paid program called diskgenius which claimed to read RAW HDD.
The trial allowed a test of 'small' files (turns out less than a few mB so of no real use).
It showed promise as I was able to open a couple of small spreadsheets.
I found out I have a faulty port on motherboard (not a disk issue) and so did not proceed any further
    .

    • Good question. I don't know exactly what was on the HDD, as it was primarily TV shows, games and videos. But I know I have stored miscellaneous personal items, not that I recall what they were and that's what i would recover.
I'll try Disk Genius trial out and see where that leads me.
I'm certain its a USB interface/controller issue. As I have another different Seagate HDD with same plugs and it failed to operate.
But once the drive is plugged into the motherboard without the controller I can hear the disk spin.
      Cheers.

If you're proficient in this area and you're desperate for the data, you can go to he HD recovery company.
But they charge you a lot.

  • Nothing is actually deleted yet - just all the addresses are gone. If it was me, I'd go to download.com and look for a free data recovery utility. I haven't done it for years and have no idea what a good one is now. Go by the feedback and score.

Ebay and buy another of the same unit and swap drives

I have a couple of spare usb boards from shucking Seagate Expansion drives a few months ago. I don't think they are model-specific but haven't checked that.

Happy to post one over if you're not in Perth.

  • Have had luck in the past using a 'legitimately sourced' copy of the EaseUS data recovery tool
