Was most likely rice weevil larvae, which you probably don't want to hear, but the eggs are pretty much in all rice. It's just that you normally eat them before they hatch. The good news is, they are perfectly safe to eat and you have probably done so, every other time you have eaten rice :)
@draftpunk: True This. I was born and raised in a country where rice and curry are the predominant meal. I wouldn't go to the extent saying seeing weevil larvae is the norm, but it's definitely not abnormal especially if the rice is aged. In those countries where they grow rice, we eat them pretty fresh, therefore this problem isn't common but it's understandable for imported rice that's been there for a while (during shipping etc) that these hatching to occur. As mentioned above, this may not be the answer all rice lovers would like to hear but at least these stuff you can see and when you cook pretty much become protein (lol) unlike many other germs that you cannot see in day to day fresh vegetables even after washing but you eat without thinking twice..
While I have seen this in other rices, never had this problem with this particular brand.
This rice is much better than the cloth bag rice sold in Riviana/Maharajah brands.
There are other slightly better rices sole in Indian stores.
What are these better brands? I enjoyed the basmati rice as compared to white rice it is much healthier.
India gate classic is as good as it gets. Or Tilda, which is one step below
I've had good experiences with Daawat basmati also
Personally India Gate Classic is the best. Super long grain, very fragrant and non sticky (if you cook it right)

Looking at the pic on the Woolworths site - Japanese type short grain rice grown in Vietnam.Bought a bag and tried it today. I thought it was soft and fluffy so I liked it.

Just be aware, last time we got the India gate basmati rice bag and opened it, found live maggots in them. The little white maggots looked like rice, so easily would’ve missed it. Luckily my kid wanted to see what uncooked rice looks like, and said the rice is moving dad!
