These 3 D-Cell LED Maglite flashlights are on sale again at Harvey Norman Big Buys - I bought one last time and was very impressed by it, so have bought 3 again this time. Note, there is a $15 shipping cap, and a maximum of 3 can be purchased per order.
Here is the previous OzBargain listing:

+1 voteLet's break this down:
I have a Maglite 3D.
Present tense.
It was cool back in the day when "mobile" phones with a shoulder strap were cool.
Past tense. About 20yrs past going by the description!
Summary: Still working after all of those aeons, does this tell you something about Maglite quality? :p
+4 votesNothing special really, you can get it for about the same price from Amazon. Shipping through amazon is cheaper by 50 cents, amazing.
Here is the link on amazon.

+3 votesAgree with most of the comments on here - back in the day I had a 3D mag - I thought it was the best thing around, I then converted it to LED using an aftermarket kit (which were common a few years ago on ebay, but seem to have died out with the dinosaurs - this cost more than the entire torch did originally), I have since become a dealextreme torch "junkie" and I have to say even a $15 no name from dealextreme will leave the 3D mag in the dust (and be 1:10th the weight and size).
My latest torch of choice is: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/fandyfire-stl-v2-cree-xm-lt6-5-...

+5 votesSo did she look like this after shining the torch through her?
+1 voteRe Deal Extreme - I ordered a number of torches in Nov-11, received 1/11 batches in Dec-11, chased up first time and they were rude and asked me whether I wanted a refund if I didn't want to wait - I said I would. Second time they said I would get by Christmas - I didn't. Chased them up again early Jan-12 and finally received another batch so that's 2/11 batches. They said to wait a few days. Not urgent but I will be requesting a refund in February and am extremely disappointed in their service/delivery speeds when items were supposedly in stock. Admittedly they have nice torches… if you actually receive them.

+1 voteNot you, Mike, just your neg—which has since been revoked?
Not everyone needs an "OMG it burns! it burns!!!" retina-destroying brightness from their torches. Sufficient brightness to navigate in the dark seems more fit-for-purpose than the ability to fry an egg.
The three main advantages 3D Maglites (and even moreso, 4D Maglites) have over the little, high-powered crees on DX are:
- Reliability of long battery and bulb life, due to not intentionally over-powering.
- Durability, especially with the heavier D batteries.
- Reach (and weight) making it better for use as a 'legal' baton.Generally, you'd want to have a small, high powered torch, with something akin to this Maglite as a backup. Kill the rabbit with one; roast it with the other.
+3 votesI may be narrow minded but that doesn't make me wrong.
I hate to break it to you Mike, but IME only looking at one facet of a situation not only makes you wrong, but also extremely naive! There is more to a torch than just lumens.
lmh86 is absolutely right. If you've ever done any real night work you'd realise that a mega bright-white, super collimated beam is actually counterproductive to your own night vision; which believe it or not, you are still going to need in the dark despite the presence of an artificial light source.
What a lot of you guys are getting from places like DX & calling 'torches' or 'flashlights' are actually 'tactical lights', more designed for light weight mounting on weapons for special purposes, not for use as general flashlights. Frankly, some from China that I've seen have been of fairly mediocre build quality, some forums even suggest dodgy mods like sticking foil in some models to make them more reliable.
It all comes back to horses for courses. If you want a little bright light to run around the back yard & play 'spotlight' with your mates, & if it fails or goes flat you can just go inside & play Nintendo Wii, then a cheapie from DX will do just fine. However, if you need a workhorse with a pedigree that assures it will perform through abuse, inclement weather, ice, mud & slush as well as providing usable light all night long, you might want a grown-up torch! :)

+1 voteMaglite is riding on it's once untouchable reputation, but those who have moved with the times know that brands like Fenix, Led Lenser and Jetbeam offer much better technology for similar pricing.
Just an example:
http://www.ledtorches.com.au/medium-size-torches/fenix-e21-1...
Once you have factored in the price to buy D cell batteries this will be overall cheaper pretty quickly.
Maglite is riding on it's once untouchable reputation…
I believe the term you're searching for is well deserved reputation for reliability! :p
…brands like Fenix, Led Lenser and Jetbeam offer much better technology for similar pricing.
KISS principle bro, simple = reliable!
There's a very good reason that you'll still find a Maglite somewhere in every cop car, ambulance and SES vehicle! Yeah, they often carry small tactical lights, but when the chips are down & they've got a lost kid in the middle of the night in a howling storm & a flood, guess what the fallback is??? :o

I have one of these Mag 3D's and it's brilliant! Nice and big, great output with super bright LED. Sit's next to my front door and can be used as a baton in emergencies.
To all the haters having a whine about how Mag lights are useless and over rated, they are simple in design, function better than all the brands mentioned and have been around longer than most of you have been alive showing durability.
Great deal - If you are after a great torch then buy one, won't let you down.
Costco Melbourne has the 3D & 2AA LED Mgalites for $40 in a blister pack
How bright is the 2AA? With NiMH cells, a 2AA could easily be made as bright as a 3D mag, but I expect Mag make them much dimmer.
This thread reminds me of Trinitron vs Plasma/LCD arguments:
A) The Trinitron has been around for ages and proven its reliability. Better colour gamut!
B) But LCD/Plasma are bigger, brighter, cheaper, a fraction of the size and weight and high definition.
A) I don't care - the Trinitron can be used in a catapult to smash castle walls.
abnormalitie on 19/01/2012 - 23:49 ¶costco sydney also, walked passed it today, it was like 37.95 if i remember correctly.
tebbybabes on 21/01/2012 - 17:50 ¶Yep, I can confirm Costco Sydney has them for a hair less than $38. I was just there yesterday and I still picked up the Harvey Norman deal yesterday too.
Valuewise, the Costco thing is hard to beat because it has the 2AA torch in addition to the 3D AND the fact that it comes with all batteries. However, the combo pack in Costco is the 2nd gen. LED from Maglite. The Hardly Normal special is the 3rd gen with is allegedly slightly brighter with a longer throw.
(of course you have to take into account the fact that Costco requires paid membership to shop there)
Just some points to take into account when comparing them.
-1 votedonkeykong on 23/01/2012 - 18:25 ¶I have been a flashaholic for a while but after spending over $3000, I have stopped and sold 1/3 of the inferior one away. Some of my tiny torch in the collection will put this maglite to shame. I recommend you guy to look into Zebralight, they are tiny, reasonable price, and very functional especially the headlight.

Nice price! Gotta love Maglite, best torches around.
