  I have had a lot of lights over the years and never seen one that will actually give visibility at that distance that isn't an enormous spotlight built onto a vehicle.

  It would be rare to even have visibility past 100-150m, also it would be extremely dangerous for other riders and vehicles to have a beam that long.

    New to cycling but am planning to ride into work 2 days/week. Have a hand me down bike and looking to replace the lights on them- what would you recommend?

      best bang for buck would be olight; i bought an rn1500 (1500 lumens) for $92 and have used it daily (mostly for night riding) since the start of the year. compared with lights from the "cycling brands", they want to charge about the same price for not even half the amount of lumens.

      unfortunately since then olight have been clearing out their cycling lights so the only one left is the 2000 lumen for $172. bit much if you're only riding 2 days/week

          @Craze: Also try the Nitecore BR25 or BR35. Very reliable company and can be found in the $50-90 range.
