Woolies rump steak and sausages... Did I get a bargain or ripped?

hey guys,

My wife thinks I got ripped. Thought I'd check here if she is just yanking my chain.

I got a voucher from the paper. Said $15 discount if you buy 2kg rump steaks. The rump steaks were $39 so after discount $24. I thought $12 per kilo was a good price. She says no.

I also saw sausages. 8 pack was $8.99 but 24 pack was $11.99. So I got the 24 pack. She says 50c per sausage isn't cheap.

Can you guys tell me if Woolies ripped me off?

Pro tip: Even if you're wife is wrong, you don't tell her.

What's the weight of the sausages? Are they just regular sausages?

    Some references to meat prices,

    1.5 kg Scotch Fillet= $23 kilo @ Aldi Bankstown = $35

Also, http://www.vicsmeat.com.au/ is $15/kg for rump according to their price list.

Grocery price comparison gives the price for rump as around $12/kg and up

    • Duuude, you got it wrong. Your wife WON'T be wrong, you'll just think she is, so swallow your pride and suck it up. When it eventually dawns on you that she actually WAS right, you'll be so glad you did 'cos you won't be eating humble pie off her boots.

  • Really depends on the quality… Rump Steak can be bought for less than $10 regularly from my experience, but it may be a different type of rump from what you bought, I can't tell the difference. Market almost always have cheaper meat compared with the big 2 though, especially around closing time on weekend.

  • I bought some rump steak for 9.99/kg at IGA today.

  • You didn't get ripped off and you didn't get a bargain either!!
Rump @ $12 kg and the snags are about average price.
All you got was the fun of using a coupon.
    annddd… don't tell the missus she was right… that's a no-no !!

and dont let her know that you also spent $1 on the paper to get the coupon..

Although I love your quandary, based on advices given here before, you cant admit you are wrong or tell her she's wrong… Then a again, I guess thats probably a true quandary in all male/female arguments… LOL

  • rump steaks can be bought at my local butcher for about $9-13. cheap sausages, are well, cheap sausages. 50c each is also about average. I much prefer buying from my local butchers for sausages, about $7/kg but taste much nicer.

    • 8 sausages for $8.99 = $1.12 each
    • 24 for $11.99 = $0.50 each

So LOL - out of the two, would she rather you had bought the first one!?

But it's the per kg price that matters. After all, one could have been thin sausages, and the other thick. If you want CHEAP sausages, get them from Aldi @ $3.88/kg. That's cheaper than Coles & Woolworths. Their cheapest is about $4.99 from memory.

As for rump steak… The only people that pay $19.50/kg are housekeepers of drug dealers and media moguls that live in Coogee. (If people have any brains, that would be the case anyway.) You sure you don't mean T-bone steak? Anyway… We buy meat in bulk when it's on sale. And when rump is on sale, it usually never gets below $10/kg anymore. So $12… when you don't have any meat in the freezer or want to eat some steak… is a good price.

That said, smile, congratulate her, and tell her it's weird - but her budgeting skills really TURN YOU ON and you'd love to go dow… (you get the idea). She'll probably get so hot herself at your compliment, that she returns the favo…

  • She's right. She's always right.

That said, try buying meat from a butcher - our local Coles has a butcher next door, and while the prices are pretty comparable the difference in quality is astounding.

  • Just suck it up and life will be much easier for you.

  • Even if you did get a reasonable purchase, it's one way to get her to do the shopping from now on… ;-)

  • The Woolies $8.99 for 24 sausages taste a lot better than the Coles $7 for 22 ones.

The Aldi ones are also pretty horrid.

You cannot really base your purchase ONLY on price for Meat (or any fresh produce) as the crappiest stuff is always less expensive.

    • Comments like "the crappiest stuff is always less expensive" and you will lose your "Bargain" badge.

      Be warned…. ;)

  • as the crappiest stuff is always less expensive

That is SO not true, even when it comes to sausages - the local butchers' award winning sausages are miles ahead of the supermarkets in taste and quality, yet are always less expensive. The same applies to the majority of their meat.

    • NO - I didn't mean that you couldn't get good stuff at a lower price. What I meant was that you cannot ONLY choose on price - you have to balance it with quality.

I've never seen any butcher that sells 22 sausages (1.7kg) for $7 = $4.11 per kilo. But of course the butcher's award winning $10/kg sausages would taste a lot better than Coles' $10/kg sausages.

It's exactly the same concept with other products too - for example a pair of headphones - the ones for $10 are highly likely to be as good as the ones at $100.

So, what I was trying to say was to choose the price point, and then choose the best quality you can get for that price. Or choose a particular brand / product, and then find the best price for it.

  • Tell her to shut up and go back to the kitchen to make you a steak and sausage sandwich.

    • Then run for your life!

    • LOL - well said!
