Help Me Understanding How They Works: NAS - Backup&Sync software- Google Photo to Backup My Photos

hi All,

So i have few thousands photos in my NAS, under various folder names (date, location, etc).

I want to upload all of them to Google Photos - High Quality upload (yes i understand the quality, and what happen after 1 June).
found this https://photos.google.com/apps, installed on my laptop, and then pointed/chose the the Main Photo folder on my NAS, clicked sync.
it seems to work, slowly.

now my questions:

  1. it uploads the photo into my google drive (i can see a new folder call "Computer" inside there are photos from my NAS), not google photo?
i thought they will go straight to Google Photo? did i do something wrong?

  2. assuming the point 1 is correct - then how to upload them all to google photos? when i go to google photos:
i can see upload button then pick upload from google drive - but i cannot pick a folder just individual photos?
or, i can go to album, create new album, then add photos, but i cannot pick upload from google drive…
    so? i am confused

  3. as i install Backup&Sync software on my laptop, but the folder is on my NAS,
if i shutdown my laptop will the upload process keeps going, or i need to keep my laptop on till finish?

thank you.

I haven't done this but it may help you. You need to keep laptop switched on until it completes. Think NAS as an USB pendrive.
Right click Backup&Sync icon on notifications pane -> Preferances -> My Computer -> Google Photos , Tick add newly added photos to google photos ?

    • The above comment in Image Form

      • i have that ticked already, but images still got uploaded to Gdrive not Gphotos

        • add your folder to the list in the image, and select high quality or full quality below that

  • I don't understand why the photos aren't getting uploaded to photos.
But I haven't used this software.
I just drag and drop the files onto my web-browser that is logged into Google Photos.

  • OP, what's your use case for storing them in high quality? I started uploading photos to Google Photos last night too, from my PC which has backups of photos from older phones, digital cameras etc. It's something like half a terabyte of photos, so I was thinking of keeping the original quality locally, and storing as many photos in high quality in Google photos before June 1, purely for Google's excellent searchability.

    What are other people doing?

Has anyone found the high quality versions of the photos lacking? Eg have you tried to print a photo and found the high quality version wasn't as good as the original?

    • probably same as you, just as secondary free backuup. the original will still on my NAS

  • I switched to paying for Google One, it's like $2.50/month for 100GB, and currently is being paid out of Google Opinion Rewards credit

Switched from High Quality to Original Quality.

Google photos is handy with it's integration into Nest Hub devices etc, and it's searchability

    • Switched from High Quality to Original Quality.

How did you do this? Did you have to remove your photos and upload them again?

      • Unfortunately it means anything uploaded from now is original quality. Old stuff is high quality.

        Cbf re-syncing everything

        • If you haven't deleted the photos from your phone, is it as simple as changing the quality setting in the app?

You've almost convinced me to upgrade, if I can re-upload everything (I never filled my phone so I still have all the originals)

          • @Switchblade88:

is it as simple as changing the quality setting in the app?

Yeah, there's a few guides online. You need to turn sync off, delete them all from Photos, then turn sync back on

    • hmm i dont think i can collect $2.50/month from the rewards… i think i got like $1-1.50 only a month that is if i go out a lot (the next day i will get "which places do you visit recently" question)

      • I had money in there, then Google gave me $7 credit after I signed up lol

That's still only $1-1.50/month you'd be paying for proper cloud storage…

        • Agree…. like right now i checked my balance is $16.xx
Was more months ago but spent them on some in app game purchases….
