  • VA panels are quite good. But these Samsung Odyssey curve is too much. Unless you are sitting exactly right in front of the monitor, you won’t have a good visual.

If you are considering it, I highly recommend watching some comparison videos to get an idea. Avoid “paid reviews” those are crap and won’t give you true information.

    • So you mean the best are the ones that curve little almost flat? How many R?

    • Have you actually used one? I have a 32" G7 and it's really not as bad as you would probably guess. I barely notice the curve.

      • I really wanted to get a G7, but the extreme curvature stopped me.

I figure the curve is great for gaming, but how is the curve if you wanted to watch movies or do productivity work on it? I really would like an opinion on the curvature for work related purposes. I don't have access to see one in person.

I figure it would be average for movies and bad for work, or am I wrong on that?

        • I use mine for gaming, uni work, and movies. This is all anecdotal of course, but, for gaming it's excellent really (as expected). Great colours, high refresh rate, without the infamous VA ghosting. Blacks aren't perfect for a VA, but still much better than comparable IPS monitors.

For work, I would say depending on the work, it's fine. I'm mostly using it for word documents, and it doesn't bother me. If you needed colour accuracy or something, IPS would be the way to go (though I believe the G7 is considered very good for a VA panel).

Movies are also surprisingly fine, I watch from about 1-2m away and can easily get immersed without noticing the curve. Maybe further away would make the curve more noticeable, I'm not sure.

Regardless, after getting used to the curve, I barely notice it now unless I'm consciously looking for it. It's worth noting my experience may also be amplified because I came from a crappy 23" TN monitor from 2009.

Also, I think the marketing for the G7 makes the curve look way worse than it is.

          • @phabez: Hi mate, thank you for the reply and very honest opinion.

I may actually put this back on the list then. I'm going to have a good hard look at it now that you've said you can still use it for movies (I'd also only be sitting 1-2 meters away at max, so if you're saying this distance is fine for movies, that sounds good. I thought you'd have to sit closer), and it's also OK for work related stuff (Having two documents opened side by side is fine I take it?).

I love everything else about it (apart from the excessive curvature). I assume with the refresh rate you can turn that down to 144Hz as I don't have a video card that can handle 240Hz.

It's not the marketing really, it more just that I am coming from a 2 x 24" Dell Ultrasharp IPS 60Hz flat panel setup and have not used a curved monitor before, so I felt that jumping straight to one of the most curved screens might be hard to get used to. I just didn't think it could be used as an all around screen. I thought it's by far best for gaming and wouldn't be great for movies or work related stuff. I also haven't had access to talk to someone that owned a Samsung G7 and does gaming, movies, and work related stuff on it.

Can I ask, what is a good price for this monitor? Does it ever come on special at all? How much did you end up getting it for? I see that it's also sold at Harvey Norman. Do you suggest I get it from there (order it online as my local store never stocks it), or should I look at getting it from a dedicated computer store?

            • @Ice009: Two side by side documents has worked fine for me.

You can use 144Hz if you want, I even had to do that before I got my new graphics card.

Honestly, I'm not sure what a good price for it is. I bought it when it was just released in Australia, so full price essentially. As for where to buy it, I would say wherever it's cheapest (providing the seller is reputable). Maybe good return policies are also worth seeking, so if you don't end up liking the curve you can return it. Other than that, getting it local is best if possible since shipping monitors can be risky, though I shipped my G7 and it arrived fine.

I will also point out that Samsung announced a flat G7 variant back in March this year (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edX8kZcE4p8&t=1254s), but details of if right now are a bit scarce.

  • Only 250nits.

  • This is in the same performance category as the CJG5 series that preceeded it, so unfortunately nothing like the Odyssey G7 and G9.

  • +1

    Same price from PCCaseGear:

I looked at the Samsung and the Gigabyte G27QC for my kid. I'm very happy with the Gigabyte and would highly recommend that. Reviews on the G5 isn't that good.

    • But PCCG are a ripoff with their delivery charges. They usually make an extra $20 on these type of item.

  • Seems like you can get this deal directly from Samsung
