Optus Prepaid SIM Card With $30 Recharge For $10 Delivered (Online Only, 1 Per Customer) @ Optus

120

Optus prepaid SIM card with $30 recharge:

$10 with free delivery (Online Only, 1 Per Customer)

You declare that you have less than 5 prepaid mobile services & this new service is for private use.

If you are not with Optus, you can keep your number or get a new one.

If you are on an Optus prepaid plan, please read the note below.

Note: this is technically a SIM Starter Kit, but I have used these cards before to recharge an existing Optus prepaid number (I just turned off auto-recharge and activated the new SIM card when my existing prepaid plan expired).

I can't guarantee it will work this way every time, but I have never had a problem with it. Just choose to keep your existing number and activate.

When I posted this deal, I reported it, because I wasn't sure if the link contains a referral code (which I think is against ozbargain rules).

So I asked a mod to have a look and fix it if there is a problem.

I copied and pasted the link as it was in my browser to make sure it worked for everyone.

But if it doesn't then this shorter link should take you to the same deal:
    https://offer.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid/sim-card/30-sim?keyw…

It's shorter, so it probably doesn't have a "referral link" (whatever that is) and you can try it if the one I posted doesn't work on your browser.

Hopefully a mod will have a look at the report soon and decide which link is the "correct" one (to make sure ozbargain rules are followed) and so that people are not concerned about my report and think that there is something wrong with the deal (there shouldn't be).

Thanks. I do the same as you but I just keep buying starter kits from different companies and porting my number.

I am averaging $15/month for 40gb data. Much better than paying $50 postpaid.

I find that starter kits are always on special every 2nd week.

      • That's an excellent idea, if people don't mind spending a few extra minutes a month.

Personally I don't use much data on my mobile, so it still costs me about $14 a month on the Optus prepaid plan, but you have got yourself an excellent idea.

Ps. I wonder if you could just transfer a number between two companies every month, because if it was possible people could buy a bunch of starter kits (you're right the go on sale regularly and often have a long time before they need to be activated - I think as much as two years for Optus on some cards I bought).

        • If you don't use much data, surely there are better plans out there without the hassle of recharging for $10/mth.

          • @Popo: Yes, there probably are better deals out there, but I've been with Optus for ages (my family has) and I only get the prepaid plans with no more than one month's duration (because I want to have the freedom to change if I wanted to, even if I never seem to change from Optus).

I think it's a combination of being familiar with the company, it's products, and it's operations, and laziness on my part .

I guess what I'm trying to say is the potential benefits of changing to a different company do not seem to me worth the bother in my particular circumstances, if that makes any sense (except for changing from one company to another every month and using starter kits every time, as shegeloth suggested above, which sounds like a good idea to me which I might try some time).

  • arrrh, the good old days when they sell $30 for $5 and $40 for $10

  • I have used these cards before to recharge an existing Optus prepaid number
(I just turned off auto-recharge and activated the new SIM card when my existing prepaid plan expired).

    How does this actually work?

When I did a SIM swap with a $30 Optus Starter Pack, it didn't work. I was on the Epic Data Prepaid plan, and it just deleted my $30 Starter Pack credit completely, and did a simple SIM Swap?

Anybody know how to do a Recharge from an new Optus Starter Pack?

    • Last time I asked for a transfer of my existing number from a phone I couldn't find (so it was a SIM card replacement) in store.

Found an old SIM start up kit with $40 credit which they put on my number, and even changed the plan for me in Optus store.

But I'm pretty sure I have followed the replacement SIM instructions online in a browser, rather than whatever instructions were on the card (they were too small for me to read comfortably anyway).

So it worked for me, but I don't do it all the time, maybe people who do this often might have problems?

      • Edit. I wrote I used the replacement SIM method, but more accurately, if I remember correctly, it was an online LOST sim replacement method (if there is any difference).

      • I would also add that waiting until your plan has expired, before using a starter kit, may help (but I'm just guessing here).

  • Maximum 5 Other Prepaid Accounts

Where does this clause come from? ACMA does not restrict the number of mobile phone services that you can hold, but it does require additional ID checks if you have more than 5. https://www.acma.gov.au/acmas-rules-id-checks-prepaid-mobile…

    • When you go through the online purchase process you have to tick a box confirming that you don't own more than 5 other prepaid accounts.

I'm not sure if it was 5 Optus prepaid accounts or total, it's just a limit on this promotion, not a limit on the allowed number of prepaid accounts per se (afaik).

  • As much as Optus suck big time on deals these days, this one is "ok".

In my situation, I have 1 number finishing with them. So this can be use as a long expire with $5 call pack each moths. for data my wife still on $65 Optus one which still have 5 months to go. So all I need is a cheap MBM data sim to tap into that 500G data pool. You do need a dual sim phone for this to work though.

The good thing about being on an Optus prepaid sim is you can port into any deals that is coming up including Optus deal from Harvey while you still remain with a major telco so you don't run into number porting problems with MVNOs like COL.

    • My understanding is that Optus no longer has phone plans like the old days but they are actually separate, the phone part and the service part. The phone part you are locked in a monthly contract to pay off but the service part you can change when ever you want.

      • I'm not sure if I understood you correctly, you should be free to choose any plan or service they provide, unless you buy a phone from Optus on a plan.

Eg. I have a phone I bought outright, and I can change the plan or service they offer as long as it's a prepaid plan/service.

        • You can change your plan even if you buy a phone from them, the monthly repayment is the same.

My criticism is price of its current phone plan are absolutely garbage compare to what they use to be and the only discount ever giving out on handset is to match retail specials when there is one. They then use this "special" to lock you into a 24 / 36 month period. You are "free" to leave anytime but you have to pay off the phone in the original price. You think let's do a twelve month contact? Yes you can, just without all the discount so there is no point.

Both Telstra and Vodafone specials are valid even if you only take up twelve month contracts. Optus just one blood sucking telco with garbage service now, that is my two cent.
