      I use an i7 variant as a server/chia farm and it's excellent.

      • Curious. Is using HDD for a chia farm feasible?

        • +2

Consumer grade SSDs will die very very quickly. I plotted weeks ago and have an excess amount of HDDs available.

          • @Clear: Ran nicehash on rigs with thumb drives as main drive for 1+ years?

            Chia is intensive?

            • +4

@Croshema: Very intensive. People did some tests and found that a 512GB consumer SSD with a life expectancy of 5-10 years was reduced to just 40 days after constant Chia farming. It had about 256TB of data written in that time.

Hence why enterprise/high endurance SSDs are recommended over traditional consumer SSDs. For me I'm opting for high capacity enterprise grade HDDs taken out of old servers with some life still attached to them.

              • @Clear: Yep, this is why you use a ramdisk :)

                • @MasterScythe: Omg why didn't I think of that before! This requires some research.

                • @MasterScythe: Pretty sure you can't ramdisk. Vaguely I recall a writing block in the region of 500 gb

                  • @imcold: What's the issue there? 500GB of RAM is far from impossible on workstation level machines, and is cheaper thanks to 'never needing to replace' an SSD

      • +3

Ok neggers you want to say I'm wrong? Taking into account that I said the Z230 is an excellent PC for chia farming and taking into account that I never agreed with it being a better and cheaper deal.

Elite 800 G1 has 3 SATA ports. Z230 has 5 SATA ports. The more storage you have for CHIA the better, so therefore the Z230 wins. Not to mention an i7 is typically better than an i5.

        • -2

          Isn't it an i5 also

          • +1

@R3XNebular: Did you even read what I said?

            I use an i7 variant as a server/chia farm and it's excellent.

To put it more simply. I have a HP Z230, it is the same as what annarchon linked, except it's the i7 version and not the i5 version and it's an excellent computer for being a chia farm.

It can even come with a Xeon E3-1200 v3 based on the Specs.

            • @Clear: Is your setup 1 or 2 SSD and the rest is HDD? If it is then what SSD are you using, and what size?

              • @g1: Single SSD purely for OS and apps. Four 4TB WD Red HDDs but only just upgraded to 6.

            • @Clear: FWIW I also have no idea why you are being neg'd. I appreciate your comments :)

              • @akbal: It's all good fun. I know they're not capable of defending themselves.

        • Maybe they don't believe that jv is into chia?

      • what i7 variants are there ?

any that make use of DDR4 ?

im wanting to bulid a PFsense box or other box and add in quad network cards

        any recommendations

        • HP Z230 was first released back in 2013 so it utilises DDR3 RAM. They had a whole range of different configurations in terms of CPUs but they were all mostly 4th gen Intel. Infact you're going to find that most ex-corporate desktops from HP, Dell etc. are mostly 3rd and 4th gen.

A more expensive option is the HP Z240 as you get a 6th gen i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, better CPU cooler and if I'm not mistaken it has an M.2 NVMe slot. It's also near identical to the Z220/230 in design.

          • @Clear: Cheers tho basically what im trying to do is build something like this

            https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002034409771.html?spm=a2…

but with 8 1gigabit Ethernet ports or more with Low wattage ie 3x4 ethernet cards or 2x4 Ethernet cards via pc or something if i can keep the wattage down and and cost down a bit i can settle for losing the small form factor …. ie inside a big case

also can the cpu in the OP post be dialed down with out losing all the clock speed or ?

            • @mikezillakind: The BIOS on these OEM desktops are restricted so undervolting the CPU to use less power isn't really possible.

There are cheaper versions of what you linked with low power Intel Celeron CPUs.

              • @Clear: i know the celerons are too weak tho , i figure il just build my own

pity the 9900t es isnt cheap anymore

thats what im looking at now is hacked up parts on ali express considering frankenstin options

                • @mikezillakind: I guess you need to search for a 3rd or 4th gen i3 desktop on eBay if you want low power but faster than a Celeron. Getting low profile cards with multiple LANs is more difficult.

    • +2

Does this model come with ssd drive?

      .

    • +1

This has an HDD vs an SSD in the OP.

    • +6

Tower vs SFF, HDD vs SSD, not really apples vs apples.

      • Yeah, this deal works out cheaper if you budget $30-40 for a cheap SSD. The CPUs are close enough as to be identical given the uses these machines are destined for, so the form factor is the clincher for me.

Not sure if the Quadro K2000 is worth anything though?

    • I'd pay more for the SSD… That said, tower = ability to use a full height graphics card.
for a few hundred but the tower would be a decent gamer.

(that said you cant really even get low end graphics cards at a good price these days)

      • Its an at least 5 year old SSD, I have refurbed about 40 odd PCs (Dell Optiplex 9030 with 128GB SSD - variety of brands, Samsung, Hynix etc etc) from that era. While the SSDs still reports healthy, benchmarking it is totally different story. A good chunk of them have absmal write speeds at around 100-200 odd.

You best bet is to spend a bit and get a new SSD.

The main difference is the Z230 is a workstation class machine vs a desktop class machine in the Elite 800 with the capability and components to match.

If you are not interested in upgrading it at all, then you might as well get

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234026362498

Sure its a 4570s va a 4570 here and a smaller SSD, but its 40 bucks cheaper, 50 with PPSS100, and no need for ebay plus.

    • Oooh, 400w. Can plug a 3060 into this, assuming it doesn't bottle neck it.

      • +1

That 4th Gen i5 will definitely bottleneck a 3060 hard

        • How about an i7? That's should be barely enough, right?

          • +1

@Wonderfool: Even the best 4th gen i7 will not be able to keep up with the GPU.

            • @FireRunner: By how much though? If it's only 10%, might be worth it.

Edit: whelp, too late to consider now.

              • +1

@Wonderfool: It's hard to give a percentage bottleneck because of each game is different and it also depends on resolution. If you played at 4K, the GPU would be utilised more so the CPU bottleneck would be less apparent but playing at 1080p you'd find the GPU being very underutilised. I'd expect for 1080p, the bottleneck would be way over 10% in most games.
If you're going for RTX 3060 build, you'd best get a much more modern CPU (preferably 6 cores with 12 threads or better)

              • +2

@Wonderfool: My old build with an i5 4670K (same CPU, but overclocked) bottlenecked a 980 Ti pretty hard at 1080p. A 3060 is at least 50% faster.

I wouldn't pair this with anything better than a 2060. Maybe at 4K you could get away with it, but anything lower is going to bottleneck hard.

      • Ooo! if I take out all the structural supports I can fit a Porche engine in this classic Mini Minor!

    • The Nvidia Quadro K2000 seems comparable to the GT730.. Roblox machine anyone?

    • The listing has ended unfortunately.

  • Dual display port is pretty rare at this level. Wonder if they do 4k60hz?

    • on HD4600. Probably no.

    • +1

Dual display port is pretty rare

The common Optiplex 9020 etc have it. plus VGA :-)

  • +2

I’ve bought two of these systems. They’re brilliant value for basic tasks. I also got at couple of Dell 1440p screens. SSD is crucial. I reinstalled win10 pro 21H1 on both and runs fine.

Perfect for browsing, office, etc without overpaying. Lots of USB ports.

  • If only this is the mini ver.

We have a few available, but only with the smaller SSD.

      • All gone now. That was quick!

      • Please pm me as soon as the stock comes back. Ta.

        • -2

Hey mate, that version isn't very common. I wouldn't wait for it.

  • How many monitors does this unit support?

  • +1

This can fit a low profile 1650 and play warzone no problems

  • genuine question, how this compare with pi 4b 8Gb without regards to the electricity usage? I'm planning to use it for adguard home, cctv, kodi and maybe other future applications. they're roughly at the same price. cheers

    • +3

I’d say a PC like this G1 would consume around 10x more power on average. A Pi 4 idles at ~3W and maxes out ~8W, I haven’t measured my G1, but I have measured the power consumption of my main HTPC which is an HP Pavilion an i7-6700/16GB/RTX2060, it idles around 35W and averages around 50~60W when watching youtube/Netflix 4K, But goes over 300W when running demanding games.
But despite the higher power consumption, I'd pick a PC over a Pi4 any day of the week (BTW I also have a Pi 4) because a PC is a lot more versatile (more OS support and therefore app support) and also faster (depending on the task). As for the cost of electricity, assuming an average of 40W for the PC running 24x7 with $0.25 per kWh you are looking at around spending just $90 a year, but you can reduce this significantly if you program your PC to sleep when not in use.

      • appreciate the information. thanks mate.

  • -2

How come this cpu doesn't have a HDMI port/s? Am I missing something here?

    • It's got Display port which is better.

      • -1

        Why is it better?

        • Back in the day it had higher resolutions and refresh rates. Less difference now.

    • +1

Most business machines use display ports, you can grab a $10 display port to HDMI cable/adaptor from Amazon/eBay.

  • Don't tell FuzeTech, we'll see these added with 3Gb 1060's in an RGB case soon!

  • +2

    Cheaper than Win 10 itself…

    • +3

I found an old desktop pc on the side of the road and used the Windows 7 product key to activate Windows 10 on my computer.

  • Anyone experience running VM on it ? Looking to setup vm esxi and another 1Gbps network pcie + 16GB Ram. About to test Palo alto VM and some network simulation…

    • +1

I use one for multiple Esxi 5 VMs without issue. Have, Win10 pro, PiHole, Home Assistant & misc Linux test distros running at the moment. Comes down to how many you need and resources required. Works well for me and have 16GB, 256SSD (for OS), 1TB non SSD for Data partitions and a HP dual nic card.

      • Forgot to note that that I also have Sophos UTM Firewall running from it which was initial use.

        • Thank you for the detail comment. Which nic card that you are using ?

          • @ComputerPC: Any should do?
I just added a dual card so now have 3 x nic ports. They are cheap to buy on Ebay $20 to $30

Example: HP NC360T Dual-Port Gigabit NIC PCI-E Server Adaptor PCIE LOW PROFILE Card

Make sure it's low profile and not full size if using in SFF PC

            • @Borg: Thanks mate. Exactly what I need. Might after the i7 cpu for more core at this stage

  • coupon not working??

  • Wish I have ebay plus

  • How many internal hard drives can be put in this case? Specs don't list a specific number

Would like to add at least 1x HDD as well as the included SSD. Preferrably 2x HDD.

    • It has 3x SATA ports.
      I have 1xSSD and 2x3.5" HDDs in RAID 1

  • does it have single stick of 8gb ram or multiples to make up 8gb?

  • These have vPro too. Great for a headless whatever-ya-make-it with the inbuilt IP KVM :)

    • There are limits to what you can do and see with vPro and a pain to setup. It's nice to have but if the PC is in your own home.office, there is not a lot to see.
One can't remote in and control it like a full on KVM (that I could ever find). One could view PC Stats, manage power etc but not fully remote access it like severs with iLO which is a dedicated iLo remote NIC port. Even that needed a Lic.

      • +1

        ??

Umm vPro does support full on KVM.
Try Mesh Commander ;) for a free option
        Or any decent rmm tool

Setup with a IP on the ME interface, disable user consent, enable the KVM in the ME settings, and off ya go :)

        • Interesting. I gave up years ago playing with vPro due to lack of anything useful (for my needs) due to no Direct KVM full PC control.
Thanks for the note about Mesh Commander. I have added that onto my "To Test/Play With" list.
