The RSPCA already has trouble with buyer remorse and people returning pets that were "a good idea at the time". Price is a hurdle that hopefully reduces the likelihood that a buyer will make an unwise snap decision.
Although my pomeranians would love a kitten to play with - until it grew up and started beating up on them.

The RSPCA really do give prospective new owners the third degree. There is a bit of paperwork to go through, I swear it'd be easier to adopt a baby, lol.
It's good in a way, weeds out the irresponsible owners.

+3 votesTry not to look past the cats at the RSCPA. While the kittens are cute, they're only small for 3-6 months and before you know it they're almost fully grown. During the early stages of their life, they require a lot more care and attention than older cats, and are more likely to have accidents. If you're looking for a pet that doesn't require too much attention, then a cat can be a great pet.

+2 votes… and if you are in MELBOURNE: we recently bought the most beautiful kitten from the Lort Smith Animal Hospital, $100 all in ($140 if under 6 months old).
"All animals available for adoption are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and health checked before joining a new family. To date we have reunited or re-homed over 200,000 pets to loving families."
They are a fine organisation who do a lot to help people for whom every cent counts.
They have cats, dogs, and more:
