How is this a bargain? Are you discounting from a normal price?

    • It's not a bargain, but it's a neat trick for those unaware of it.
The intention is that you already own the paper copy of the book but, as if by magic, you only need enter the ISBN of any available paper/ebook from their catalogue. I really wonder about their business model!

      • ISBN is available on their website, you don't need to own the print book.

    • Normally you'd expect the have to purchase a new copy of the book/song/movie (at full price) if you previously owned in an analogue format and wanted to own the digital version.

It's borderline bargain/news.. But let the votes do the talking.

I think I didn't explain the deal very clearly, please see edited deal, this deal is about $4.99 for nearly all ebooks.

        • So you still have to pretend you own the book already? So kinda a half way house between buying the eBook and blatantly pirating it? ;)

    • It's $5 for a ebook, how this one being a bargain? Did you see the normal price for ebook in their online shop?

Thanks for the tip - but yes, this is basically scamming them as it's fraud. You don't own the book.

If you are going to do that, you might as well just pirate the PDF.

I am sure O'Reilly will plug this hole once they have found it's being exploited.

Seems to me that they'd be tech savvy enough to be aware that something like this can be done, so perhaps its their equivalent of the 90% off Google App sale to "celebrate" 10 billion downloads. A way to get people used to paying for your product without having to admit that in the digital age there is something wrong with their pricing structure.

Since the cost of printing a paper book is sooo ferociously high, how can anyone justify an ebook version asking price being typically the same or at best about 80% (only a 20% discount) of the printed version?

The added bonus for the O'Reilly system is they'll get a rapid increase in those who take part in the O’Reilly Open Feedback Publishing System (OFPS) to help with keeping their books up to date.

Anyway I bought a couple. Beware everyone, I reckon there'll be forex & credit card fees on top of the price, when compared to paypal. My Ozzie Amex card number wouldn't work, I had to use my Visa.

  • yeah, didn't know, thx

  • Thanks OP, much appreciated.

Is it $4.95 for each book? or $4.95 for all their books?

Awesome, thank you for posting this.

  • Legend. bought 4 for $19

    Thanks

    • You mean you bought digital copies of four books you owned, or you pirated four books?

  • Ohh books books and more books. Great find !!

  • Upgrade Registered Print Books for $4.99

So it's a service for people who own the book to get an eBook copy? But anyone can use it to get any book?

Your paying money just to pirate, then.

    No thanks.

If anyone actually feels guilty about this, you do not have to "register" anything, just use the following code: MYEP9

      • It works!

      • Seems to strengthen the possibility of this being a marketing tactic, similar to the "staff/friends/family" department store offers that were ostensibly limited but in fact available to anyone. If so, would be a good example of the psychology of exclusivity/scarcity Cialdini has described from his research into sales tactics.

  • This is a hack to obtain books cheaper, its not a bargain.

It belongs in discussion forums as per our guidelines

  • bought a bunch, great find :-)
