My Google Nests are not exactly reliable, especially when the WiFi signal isn't great (it will not tell you it lost connection, it will just randomly malfunction). I wouldn't trust my life to their technology. It will probably read you out a Wikipedia article about fire if it detects smoke, or recommend 3 nearby undertakers.

Mine advises if it loses Wi-Fi and picks up so much more than the old Bunnings one

    • My protects show yellow if they drop off wifi. That said I have pretty good wifi so its pretty rare for me.

The detector and alarm doesn't require Wifi to work though and it is certified to Australian standards … if you are not happy with your Nest protects are they still on your ceiling?

      • I'm not talking about the smoke alarm, but the Google Nests themselves. Given their reliability, I'd be very worried having smoke alarms from the same product line.

Google Nest protect (second version) are the most reliable smoke detectors on the market, if you don't trust them there is nothing you can.

A true bargain. I'm gonna get 10 so I can sell them on the black market when smokealarmageddon happens.

A bit crazy prices are still higher than what they were over a year ago; HomeBuilder + low interest rates for you!
But a bargain nonetheless given the current prices.

Homebuilder + FHOG + FHOG Corona Bonus + Stamp Duty in WA, no wonder why purchasing took off. Still waiting on a Bricky crew 6 months after signing final design/variations etc.

Oh also I got the FHSS as I made some good gains in my super since 2017 start date.

Nearly paid 40% off with only about 7-8 years full on saving (still paying share of market rent) despite my pay packet being pretty crappy the first 5.

I've got a couple of the hard wired versions in my house at the moment, will buy a couple more wireless models for other areas of the house. Very happy with them so far.

A reminder for people in QLD — there are changes coming with regards to smoke alarms, and the legislation: https://www.qfes.qld.gov.au/prepare/fire/smoke-alarms

    • From 1 January 2022, landlords must install interconnected smoke alarms in residential rental properties.
    • When one goes off, they all go off, giving everyone extra time to escape.
    • All other dwellings must transition to full compliance by 2027.
    • When a building certifier looked at them (the wired ones) and the cert codes they seemed to check out for this, but you are right do your own research. Need one in each bedroom, living area and escape path, but at least not every few meters…. yet..

      Edit: specified wired, typos.

      • anyone know what the NSW regulations are? my quick google just says at least 1 on every level.

    • This is a good reminder. I confirmed with VBA (Vic) and they confirmed that you can used wired versions, that are interconnected through wireless.

However, i had to email VBA since it was not clear on their website, so it might be worth following up yourself on this advice.

  • Nest Protect 2nd Gen Smoke CO Alarm, 1x Backplate, 4x Screws, User Guide, Welcome Guide, 3x Long-life Backup AA Batteries, 1x 120 V AC Connector

assume they goofed the copy paste as it also says

Mains Connected: 240 V Connector, Three long-life AA Energizer Ultimate Lithium backup batteries

Currently $149ea at officeworks for anyone who doesn't need 4.

    • Price-beat OW at Bunnings and that's another 10% off = $134/ea :)

      • Are any in stock? Looks like non available for C&C or Delivery, so price beat won't apply

I think it's telling when a manufacturer only provides a 2-year warranty on a product that's supposed to last for up to 10 years.
While not exactly like the Google ones, there are wireless inter-connectable smoke alarms out there that have a 10-year battery life, and with it, a 10-year warranty - and they're cheaper.

    • They don't have CO detection though…

  • I know these are mains powered but is there anything particular special about that requirement? Like do they need to be on a new breaker or a special line. Or can an electrician just like, split off some existing line to install these?

Google Store has none in stock (so can't get your 10% Google One store credit) but I did just price beat through Officeworks, buying 4 for a total of $538.64 (so 134.66 each)

Officeworks also has none in stock now :P

  • Thanks OP, need 5 for home and already have one so this deal works for me. In stock at Browns Plans in BNE.

  • So circling back, I was able to get a price match at Bunnings for 4 ($518.32) but I had to go in store as they won't price beat when they're out of stock for C&C or Delivery
