    +1 for making me laugh.

Monster products do not belong on this site.

How dare you, those are true bargains.
When a well respected and conservatively priced company like Monster is able to bend you over with 40% less pain, I think you need to reconsider.

Comes with a disclaimer..You must have had 40% of your brain removed to find this a bargain.

This Monster HDMI1000 cable 1metre increases the audio and visual quality by utilising more bandwidth than an average HMDI cable.

Why aren't the ACCC investigating this BS?

    • I agree … I mean, exactly what is their claim when they say "This Monster HDMI1000 cable 1metre increases the audio and visual quality by utilising more bandwidth than an average HMDI cable."?

      • +3

it's true. The monster HDMI is far better than an "Average HMDI"

Yep, they compared it to a HMDI. Therefore it's all OK!

        • By spelling it wrong they can claim it has a completely different meaning when the ACCC comes calling.

I hear Monster cables convert 576i to 1080p… and if you connect your computer to your ADSL1 modem, its like being on the NBN…

Man i'm gonna smash this deal.

  • aren't monster cables supposedly just a complete waste of money?

A mate of mine asked me a couple of years ago, whether $XXXX was ok for a XX inch plasma TV. I did some quick research and let him know that yeah, sounds like you're getting a good price.

So my mate parted with a couple of grand for the TV, then told me later how he'd bought a few accessories. My heart sank. He was shown the composite output, then shown the MONSTER HDMI output, and he was blown away by the difference. $140 for a cable seemed small fry to "get the best out of your investment".

    I wept.

I am sure retail stores and sales people love these types of products because they can unfortunately convince unaware customers that their new big expensive TV will be better with this more expensive cable and the store/sales person makes a big profit on a cable that probably costs less than $1 to manufacture …
I have seen sales people sell an expensive TV and then turn to the unsuspecting customer and tell them that to get the most out of their TV they should buy the most expensive HDMI cable … I have been so concerned about this practice that I have even interrupted a sales person (as another customer) and asked them to explain how the $150 HDMI cable is going to give a different result from the another HDMI digital cable for $5 elsewhere … this normally helps other customers save a bit of money :)

    • They are still pulling this bull, I got the whole spiel recently when buying a Sony 32" at HN. For real, I just laughed at him.

  • Now I just remembered something, there's a lot you can say about Kogan, both good and bad, but one stunt sticks out.

  • Discussion about the HDMI cables some time ago.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/40226

  • To be utterly fair, these cables probably cost a fairly large chunk of cash to produce, i mean they are beautifully made and hence the price tag isnt entirely unreasonable purely from that perspective - however, their purpose for existence in a digital connection is non-existent except for people wish to waste money they simply have too much of (or not enough brains).

But i'll never understand how you can sell a "premium" digital cable based on anything other then build quality - a quality that has seriously no use. Sadly, too many people do buy them and also buy the lies sales people spit about this kind of rubbish.

In the analogue days, it made some sense, you could at least measure a difference between "average" and "premium" (even if you couldnt hear it), but with digital its a case of "they work or they dont" and as long as they meet the spec, they work.

  • however, their purpose for existence in a digital connection is non-existent except for people wish to waste money they simply have too much of (or not enough brains).

Or to be fair, simply don't know any better. It's the ones who will look at the $10 one most of us here would buy, and the $50 one the salesman is pushing and decide that one must be better because of the price who deserve what they get.

    • +1

Indeed. It's not possible for someone to know everything, and people do make mistakes especially when you are put on the spot by the sales person. First time buying a digital TV, did all the research on the TV itself and decided on the exact model and where to buy. Walk into the store and then sales guy said, "oh btw you also need HDMI cable with that…" Some people ended up having to rely on cost to determine the value for something they have never heard of before.

This can also happen to any of us. Buying anything for the first time without doing enough research which ended up becoming an expensive lesson?

I actually have to applause what @jojo77 did — interrupting the sales person in the shop to help out the strangled customers from being conned.

To be fair the monster cables actually are better.

The main problem with it is that the build quality is so much more then needed, I think they also come with lifetime warranties?

Its very easy to get dodgy cheap HDMI cables that do work if you are careful with them, but its very easy for these to stop working, but at $5 this might not matter.

      • +2

I have no doubt that they are better. As @takigama has suggested above — the build quality would be a lot better than the $5 HDMI cable. There might actually be a market over there for quality made durable HDMI cables. Whether they are actually 10 to 30 times better than the cheap $5 cable is questionable though (if their value is in the same scale as their price).

However from what have seen, expensive Monster Cable is not the problem here. The problem is that retail sales have been trying to lure their customers to buy those expensive cables, regardless whether they need it or not. There are people who would buy those cables because of the build quality, durability, lifetime warranty, and simply because they have the money. However I don't think it's right for retailers to present $150 Monster Cable as the only option to unaware customers who just bought his/her first LCD TV.

        • Yeah, I agree. I'm sure the build quality is better, and I don't even mind them trying to offer better quality cables when they sell the TV (assuming they still have cheaper cables). Even at their ridiculous price, I don't see the problem, as long as the retailer actually makes it clear that the only difference is the quality of the cable itself, and the customer knows in advance that it'll make absolutely no difference to the image/sound quality.

  • This deal is monstrous!
