    Might give it a miss

    • I've had one before and it's fine for what I need it to do. Does it save data? Yes Does it break suddenly? No. Is it super duper fast? No, but I can live with it taking a couple more minutes as it is reliable.

      • I have lots of these in a 4GB version. They have always been very reliable but slow. Their transfer speed is pretty mediocre. It usually sits at 5MB/sec +/- 1MB i.e. 4-6MB/sec.

    • I've had a 4GB one of these for about 1.5 years, it's quick and hasn't failed yet…

  • Shitty drive, but ill give you a +ve just for finding it cheaper then the other deal :P
Edit, Revoked, JaneJane found it :P

+, even if it was the same price it has the advantage of not being ShoppingSquare

Have a 8gb one and its awfully slow. Took 30minutes to put a 4gb file on it.

All the dropbox deals giving me 19GB of space have filled my requirements. :D

  • of topic sorry, but whats a "fast" one that you guys can recommend?

    • usb 3? that's a fast one. but give some time for computer stores (last time MSY) for deals closer to the 1GB:$1 ratio. MSY had theirs for $36 for a 32GB one.

Look for the words in very very tiny print on the package that mentions "readyboost"

This will be fast/very fast and approved by microsoft for use as a readyboost drive.

Microsoft only approves fast/very fast flash drives and allow the "readyboost" tag.

Some of these drives are real slow as mentioned above.

for info on readyboost specis, check the wiki

  • 16GB worth of slowness. Sandisk may be well known for their fast SD and CF cards, but their current generation flash drives are woeful. I have an old sandisk cruzer 16gb that i purchased a few years ago. 8.5MB/s transfer rate and i was very impressed.

New sandisk purchased few months ago. 4MB/s. I've had friends all experiencing 3-5MB/s for current generation flash drives. My cheap toshiba/lexar drive goes faster than the sandisk.

Unless you're patient… please don't buy one. Their customer service sucks too. I'm done with their flash drives for now. I suspect the substandard flash that does not make it though QC for their SD or CF cards gets put into flash drives, i'm just speculating here.

  • Does anyone know of any flash drives that transfer at equivalent speeds to large external USB drives?

    USB 2.0 is supposed to transfer at 480 Mbits/sec = 60MBytes/sec.

In reality my WD USB drives (>1TB) reach a steady transfer rate of about 30MBytes/sec, whereas my numerous Sandisk flash drives transfer at a measly average of 5 MBytes/sec.

Any suggestions for particular brands of flash drives that will be as fast as the larger USB drives?
Or should I just got for only USB 3.0 flash drives? Has anyone had any personal experience with the recently released USB 3.0 flash drives and how fast they transfer on average?

    • USB 2.0 is supposed to transfer at 480 Mbits/sec = 60MBytes/sec

You are forgetting all the control overheads, error checking, etc. The best you will get from a HARDDRIVE is about half that, 30MB/sec.

A good test is dropping a USB 3.0 drive on a USB 2.0 port, so that you know for sure that the USB 2.0 port is what is limiting things. I've run lots of tests - a 7200RPM in a USB dock on a PCI-e USB 3.0 card gets me about 90-95MB/sec. That is the same speed as the same drive did when it was on aninternal SATA port.

Just ran a HDtune on it in the USB 2.0 port and it gets a flatline 29MB/sec.

whereas my numerous Sandisk flash drives transfer at a measly average of 5 MBytes/sec.

Sandisk actually does make (assmeble) some good memory. But their cheapest stuff is… crap. You have to be careful not to choose products based ONLY on the initial price :-)

Any suggestions for particular brands of flash drives that will be as fast as the larger USB drives

A generic USB 3.0 drive might get you 30-40MB/sec writes. Examples are the A-Ram range.

This Kingston one is blazingly fast… http://www.cravingtech.com/kingston-usb-3-flash-drive-datatr… - check it out LOL
