  • Saw these in big w yesterday for the same price. Must be price matching

    • Yeah I guess it is. I couldn't find many great deals atm

Not sure if I would use it, but the unit looks good.

From what I can gather, this '4 slice' unit really is an 8 slice unit, as it makes 4 'toasties' at a time, and each one consists of 2 slices - have I calculated correctly?

The 2 slice version states each one is jumbo sized, but this one does not mention jumbo - therefore I am assuming the 4 made at a time are slightly smaller than what the 2 at a time machine makes?

There was an episode dedicated to 'toasties' aka 'Brevilles' on the tv show 'The Cookup With Adam Liaw' recently, for those looking for inspiration.

    • From what I can gather, this '4 slice' unit really is an 8 slice unit, as it makes 4 'toasties' at a time, and each one consists of 2 slices - have I calculated correctly?

8 slices of bread, four square "toasties" at time, or 8 triangle "half toasties" at a time

jumbo usually means deeper so you can fit more filling

    • Sounds like you are new to a toasty.
You might as well start with the $7 kmart model, the 4 slice isn’t necessary unless you have a huge family.

They are the lunch of the gods.
No need to get all Adam Liaw fancy to start with, melted cheese and left overs between buttered bread will do. Slice of tomato is excellent, but dangerous as it heats to scalding temps.

Jeez jaffle makers have gotten complicated

  • +1

How exactly does this thing make a sandwich?

  • +4

I have this unit, it does make a mean toasty. Set how long you want it to run for & it beeps and turns off heat at the end so it doesn't burn. Big step up in quality over kmart brand - Nice deep moulds, even cooking. Occasionally use all 4 when the kids want some too.
Only complaint is if you don't press start when you turn it on, it doesn't automatically heat up.

    • Is it is easy to clean? The one we have leaves crumbs all over the table surrounding it. It's apain taking it to the sink for a shakedown with the cord hanging off it. Tiffany or something brand

      • not that I've noticed. Like mrf below says though, some mild sticking - Ive had mine for 18 months though and it isnt a big issue yet

  • +1

I've got this, works good but non stick coating is starting to come off

    • How long did it take for that to start happening, where is it coming off and how often did you use it?

I had one (different brand) and the nonstick was starting to come off at the edges where the toasties are sealed. Did get to be a pain due to toasties sticking and coming apart and all that.

That said, it was an ancient unit.

      • +2

Mostly along the middle where it halves the bread, I've had this unit for about a year, prob started after 6 months of use. Probably use 1 -2 times a week

        • Thanks. I figured that'd be where it'd come off. It's where the non-stick nature of the coating is REALLY required and where mine mostly came off.

          Sadness. :/

    • Yeah it's the worst.

  • I wouldnt mind the classic 'vintage' one being on sale, though it doesn't turn off automatically.

  • +2

A decent price but if you look at Camel x 3 it's been under $60 five times in the last year including under $52 twice in the last year.

    • What's Camel?

        Price history tracker for Amazon

It’s also linked at the bottom of your post automatically.

        • Are you able to see which store has the cheapest in history?

          • +2

@Yaren24: No. That’s just for Amazon.

Price Hipster is an option for a variety of Australian retailers. There’s also the Prino app.

  • Hmm, should try waffle sandwich. Waffle maker is 5X the price, which essentially does the same thing.

    • Keep an eye out around Mother’s Day, there is usually a cheap $25 waffle iron.
FWIW, this Jaffna maker is nothing like a waffle maker, and you could only substitute one for the other in dire circumstances.

In as much as I want this one, I'm waiting for https://www.amazon.com.au/Breville-Removable-Non-Stick-Stain… to come on sale somewhere.

    Two words: removable plates.

(ok. and two more words on the side: deep fill)

    • Great idea! Removable plate is lot easier to clean with

    • +1

I've got a Sunbeam deep fill and that thing is a PITA to clean! I definitely like the idea of removable plates.

    • +1

      uk wow

      • +1

Yeah. Saw that after which is why I'll also wait for local stock. Not going to ditz around with international conversion plugs in the kitchen.

        • All you need to do is buy an Australian plug from Bunnings for 3 dollars - https://www.bunnings.com.au/deta-10a-black-side-entry-plug-t… - chop the UK plug off the end of the cable, and screw the three bare wires into the three pins in the Australian plug. The plug comes with instructions showing you which colour to put into which pin.

          It's about 5 minutes work.

  • What are the cheaper options (around $30) for 2 slices that are deep fill?, Kmart has 1 model, Anko brand.
Not sure if Kogan do 1 that's deep fill, Kogan models any good?
Only looking at 2 slice as I don't have much space for a 4 slice.

The discombobul recommended 1 looks like a good option, but more than I would like to spend atm.
Might need to wait then for a sale.

    • +1

      ALDI?

      • That was fast.
I will check it out once lock downs ended, there talks of a 3rd week lock down.
My local Aldi is 7km from me I think.

Frightening number of people posting here don’t seem to have eaten a jaffle before.
You don’t need a $50 machine, but you DO need to eat jaffles.

    They will change your life.

    • +1

Who the heck calls em jaffles? It's a toasted sanga, mate. Or toastie for short. ;) Has been for the 40+ years ive been eating em anyway.

      • Oh I disagree! :p
Toasted sandwhich = two slices of bread stuck together with filling in the middle and toasted
Jaffle = what this thing makes, same as above but the edges are pressed!

      • This makes jaffles mate

    • it's just as good to make toasted/fried sandwiches in a fry pan.

jaffle makers crimp the edges together. which stops the cheese oozing out and browning which is the best bit.

  • +3

Don't buy this machine, it's non stick coating is a joke. I got one and after 6 or so months it started coming off. I ended up throwing it out just over a year old as it just kept getting worse.

I followed all the care guides and only ever used wood or silicone utensils on it. It's just a terrible terrible appliance.

    • +1

I agree and also have one that I dont use anymore as attempting to clean it is not worth the effort. This is due to the non stick coating wearing off in just a few months.
