Mid Tier PC Build (Budget $2100)

Hey all,

Another PC Build Thread!

Just need some thoughts about this build. I am severely out of the tech game and haven't purchased a PC in over 10 years and last built a PC over 15 years ago! so please be kind!!

I'm looking for a mid Tier PC, not going to play much high graphic intense games but would like to option to in the future. Mostly it will FPS's or maybe Overwatch/WOW if I'm going to game.

This is what I've got so far:

Case : be quiet! Dark Base 700 Case Black $279 / PCCG / Scorptec
Mobo : MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI Motherboard $149 PCCG / Scorptec
CPU : AMD Ryzen 5 3600 : $319 PCCG
GPU : MSI GeForce RTX 3060 GAMING X 12G $999 / Scorptec (until 16/08)
RAM : Corsair CMW16GX4M2D3600C18 Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB 3600MHz DDR4 $ 164 / Scorptec
HDD : SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS 250GB M.2 NVME SSD $84 / Scorptec
PS : Cooler Master MWE Gold Fully Modular 650W Power Supply $109 PCCG / Scorptec

Total : $2093

Monitor : LG 32GK650F-B 31.5INCH QHD 144HZ LED GAMING MONITOR $ 429 / Scorptec

Open to all suggestions! But would like to keep it as cheap as possible!

Thanks.

I'm sure you've already heard, but in case you haven't: you're in the middle of an insane unprecedented GPU shortage.

That's a budget (ish) GPU that would have been closer to $400 in saner days. So there's a chance it will halve in price (or better) in only a few months as ex-mining GPUs flood the market, and production ramps up, if you can wait.

It might be much longer, of course, nobody knows. But since prices have already started easing a bit, most people are waiting right now.

(If you really do need to buy now, look at prebuilts - in crazy times like these, they can actually be better than building sometimes, and consider using a very old/cheap GPU for a while until prices settle. Some people have gone with AMD APUs, and some new ones have just come out with impressive game performance: e.g.: the 5600G is like a $380 Ryzen 5 3600 that also includes a basic GPU to tide you over).

    A few suggestions

Case: Why a $280 case? Seems excessive when trying to save cash, it's just the box
Mobo: That's an entry level motherboard, I've always found this useful for picking a board - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wmsTYK9Z3-jUX5LGRoFn…
CPU: For high FPS gaming, the 5600X craps all over the 3600

You can get good motherboards/CPUs in a bundle very often, particularly because vendors were using CPU supplies to make IT stores buy motherboards - https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/bundle-amd-ryzen-5-56… - yes it's $200 more but it's a significant improvement. You can get better than you have for the same money if you hunt around too.

Storage: 250gb is not enough storage. There's zero point buying a super fast nvme when you can fill the entire drive in no time at all. I'd look for a 1TB for around $150, there's not a real world use case for the fastest nvme drive out there when you can pay twice the money and get 4x the storage.

The 3060 for $1,000 isn't good value for money, not when a 6700xt and 3060ti can be had for the same money, both cards are significantly better. Even the 6600xt competes with the 3060 (especially for the games you list) and they're $700.

PSU: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/644321 - Cooler Master V 650W is on sale, better PSU for a few bucks.

Monitor: It supports Freesync and not Gsync, better suited to an AMD GPU. Also you'll really struggle to do high FPS, 1440p gaming with a 3600 and a 3060.

Overall: Thought about a prebuilt system? Can get faster for cheaper.

      I'd look for a 1TB for around $150

Definitely this, 1TB is the price:performance sweet spot and many good games are 100TB plus each nowadays.

PLUS with SSD tech, higher capacity units are usually faster than the exact same model with a lower capacity, so a modest-fastish 1TB can beat a pricey-ultra-fast 256GB.

        many good games are 100TB

100GB*, so you'll get a few games on the 1TB drive

        • Oops I accidentally an order of magnitude

That specific PSU is a higher risk of failure - I had one which was apparently unavailable for a direct swap as the stock had abnormally high failure rates.

I'd get a better value NVMe drive (500GB+) and optimise your case and possibly RAM to save for a better GPU for sure.

Your other option is a prebuilt e.g. Techfast's deals which can often be better value than buying parts individually. They also had 3070's for under $1200 too, which is new!

    Other thoughts:

    CPU : AMD Ryzen 5 3600 : $319 PCCG
    Mobo : MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI Motherboard $149 PCCG / Scorptec

That seems like a lot for a 3600. Your CPU/Motherboard combo is approaching $500. In that range I'd go for a 5600x with that MSI Mortar Max that's been on here for like $60 in recent deals. No wifi, have to add that if you really need it, but otherwise no practical difference in most aspects.

(Check the Intels too if you haven't already, sometimes they are good value at the moment, starting a year or so ago).

  • I’d keep everything except gpu and cpu. Spend $150 less and get a Asus 3060ti from PLE, 2 week eta. And use that money to upgrade to a ryzen 5 5600x/g and a x570 board with support for 5000

    Why such an expensive case?

How about a Meshify C or something similar?

  • +2

    get 5600x & rtx3060ti with a cheaper case

PC in over 10 years and last built a PC over 15 years ago!

don't worry, now everything is much easier, remember the good old days with jumpers for IRQ and even for CPU voltages :D

    HDD : SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS 250GB M.2 NVME SSD $84 / Scorptec

won't be enough, that Crucial P1 1TB would be a good deal or try to get a Kingston A2000 if you can find a deal

Is this prebuild any good for the price? Also been years since i build anything so no idea what's good now. TIA

  • I'm in the same boat, looking at spending the same. I actually kind of like the build for this (would be great for BF2042):
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/643834

Don't really get the hate for it in the comments section, would prefer to support the other companies on here but havent found a system that has really compared.

  • Have not seen any deals lately so pulled the trigger on the below pre-build (upgraded a few components in the drop down menu when I ordered).

    https://techfast.com.au/products/AMD-Ryzen-5-3600-RTX-3060-T…

Decided to pay a premium as I don't have time to hunt around for individual components and put one together myself. Do note that that techfast did say that it can take 14 to 21 business days for them assemble and send.

Did a quick google and looks Radeon RX 6700XT 12GB vs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8GB and it looks like the 3060 ti is better. I'm not up to date with GPU these days so I'm taking it for face value.

    https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-3060-Ti-vs-…

Hope it helps with your decision. I was going to wait for prices of GPU to come back to more "normal" prices but with the crypto bull ran atm I don't think it will be anytime soon.
