Recommend Me a Cheap Tablet for Reading

Hi, it’s almost my bday and I’m looking for a cheap tablet for reading. I’ll mainly use the hoopla, libby, BorrowBox, kindle apps.

I’m thinking of the new Lenovo m7 3rd gen at $150. I’m sure it will be able to handle books and maybe videos.

    Anyone know about it?

Plenty of tabs at Kmart bigw under $100

  • It'll take a while to come but I'd recommend this because of the 3GB ram and USB C.

    • Was looking the same for my older children and this is a great recommendation! thanks for this.

However it seems difficult to find the corresponding case/screen protector which for a child use is essential
Does anyone know a good tablet which have all the accessories available? ideally 10", 3gb+, 32gbrom+

      • Most android tablets tend to have pretty limited accessories, even samsung ones which are typically the most popular will be limited compared to iPad. If you want one sooner rather than later, maybe look at the tab s4 or s6 secondhand.

    • That looks good but I’m stuck in Victorian lockdown and something a little quicker to arrive would be nice.

      • Unfortunately, from looking for a 7-8 inch android tablet that is cheap, there isn't really much outside of the above. Think outside of Lenovo m7/8s and Samsung tab A 8", the rest are essentially the same in terms of specs and usability, honestly they're pretty slow and will take time to load/switch apps (it'll be noticeable).

I've got an Onyx Boox Poke 3 which is an android e reader (e-ink), so you can side load apps. It's pretty good for reading books, so if you were after an e-reader but wanted android apps, this is probably the way to go. It took about a week or two to deliver for me back in March/April.

        (Personally)
        Advantages
        -e-ink
-Android (you can put google play on it but it's a bit of a pain, I haven't)
        -Good Battery life

        Disadvantages
-e-ink isn't great to navigate on, so it's basically only going to for reader (scrolling might take some getting used to)
-Android UI isn't the full blown one so it's kinda of like Android Lite
-USB c only (no headphone jack) but you can use usb c headphones or bluetooth.

    • Not sure I'd recommend that. More than one review confirms that tablet actually has 2gb of ram and many other issues reported.

  • Ereader?Kobo?

    • Won’t run my reading apps.

    • Not sure about lazor though. I hear their screens are even bad for text.

CloudLibrary, kanopy(movies), tumblebooks (kids) are some others I can think of.

if it's only for reading, those e-ink display readers are really good on the eye. However, obviously not an option if you're wanting a tablet for other uses too.

    • The cheapest Kindle is pretty cheap too, especially on a sale like prime day.

    • Agreed. If you are invested in the Kindle ecosystem (i.e. have purchased a lot of kindle books already) then get a kindle.
Otherwise I think Kobo is actually pretty awesome as you can borrow ebooks from your local library using libby/overdrive.

I've switched to Kobo even though I've accumulated hundreds of purchased Kindle books over the years.

Edit: I've also tried using an ipad mini for reading in the past but every time I pick it up I just get distracted and start watching videos instead of reading. I find nothing beats a dedicated book reader.

      • Didn’t know Kobo works with libby. I’ll have a look.

        • Kobo syncs with overdrive, and libby is just a front-end for overdrive.

In the US you can borrow library books with Kindle, but not outside the US, sadly.

    • Won’t run my reading apps.

    1. what apps
    2. wait for another sick deal on lenovo duet

      He said

  • If you use the Kindle app a lot, then getting a Kindle won't cause much issue.
It's also quite simple to load books on from other DRM-free sources, like Gutenberg.
Or as said above, a Kobo works with Overdrive and possibly others.

Definitely something to consider, e-ink is much better on the eyes. A $100 tablet will have a pretty mediocre screen and not be very enjoyable.
Otherwise you might want to spend up on something crystal clear like an ipad. Or Lenovo Duet, I just got one and the screen is quite nice. I'd probably use the kindle for novels though

  • Get a 2nd hand laptop off eBay & run Linux on it,
all for under $100 & it can read anything once you put Sumatra on it

  • I don’t know what’s your budget but the Boyue p78 is pretty amazing. 300ppi and runs all sorts of android apps and has audio as well. $269 from Kogan or catch.

  • Samsung Tab A7 lite, just bought it < $190 and its the perfect book size
