Optoma UHD35+ Projector for Gaming, Movies, Low Light Conditions

Hi All,

I would appreciate some input regarding a potential upcoming 4k projector purchase for the loungeroom, to use with ps5, PC gaming, and watching movies.

Room dimensions 3.6x4.2m. projecting onto the 3.6m wall, so throw distance approx 4m.

I was interested in the viewsonic px701, but then saw this price for the optoma uhd35+ for 1670aud. Native 4k, 240hz, 4000 lumens, high contrast.

Any better price for this model?

Any better competitors for cheaper?

Is it worth stretching to a 4k laser projector?

Budget is 1500(ish). Could go to 2 or 2.5k if the benefit is really there.

Advice, admonishments, links appreciated.

Thanks kindly.

  • If you’re checking out viewsonic look at px728 or px748. The 701 is slightly older and lacks certain features and has lower brightness than px748. Both have 240hz refresh rate I believe. The 748 is brighter (4000 lumens), but the 728 has better colours (I think is rgbrgb instead of rgbwrgbw).

I was going to go with the px748 if I didn’t end up getting a great deal on the samsung premiere.

Edit: that is a pretty great price on the 35+ though, good reviews from america on optomas stuff. If you’re thinking about laser check out reviews first, the cheaper lasers had terrible reviews for contrast ratios when I last had a look. Ignore everything you read about contrast ratios it’s all marketing, instead look up forums and reviews.

    • I do like colour accuracy.

Hmm. Maybe I should figure that into my consideration a bit more. And figure lumens in less, but then again HDR content brighter is better, right?

      Thanks again.

  • Probably the only thing to check is whether the lens zoom is suitable from that projection distance.
Plug in the numbers to the Projector Calculator on Projector Central.

Otherwise it sounds like a ripper price.

    • Ok will check it out, thank you!

    • Yep, looks ok. 4m throw with default lense gives a 113inch approx diagnonal.

  • I recommend checking out Chris Majestic on YouTube, he covers everything else you'll need for a projector setup, including screens, audio system, etc.

I went with the PX728-4K, which finally arrived in Australia late July 2021 (after months and months of delays thanks to the global chip shortage).

It's currently available from Mwave for $1,599.00.

The PX728's focus is on colour accuracy first, brightness second, so is made for the home theatre enthusiast. 2000 lumens, 240Hz, 4.2ms lag.

It has 1.3x optical zoom (better than the PX701-4K's 1.1x) so from 4m away, you could easily project a 150"+ screen.

It's definitely a step up from the PX701-4K.

    • Alright will take a look. The viewsonics also seem highly recommended, it's a tough choice.

    • Agreed it's a step up from the 701, and in terms of the optical zoom it's a step up from the uhd35+.
Between the 728, 748 and uhd35+ which would you say edges out the win, and why? Price is essentially equivalent.

      Thanks again!

    • Hi @elloraymond,

Just read your post and wanted to ask how you're going with the px728? I'm tossing up between that or the uhd35+, but I'm worried about people saying the 728 is quite noisy. How have you found it?

      cheers.

  • +2

OP here, thank you for calculators, YouTube recommendations other models and advice.

    Purchased as described above.

  • Have you looked at BENQ TK850 .. it has pretty good reviews and comes with 2 years warranty
